ongoing pastoral care ministry. St. Stephen Ministers are
members of the parish, intensely trained to care for people
who are experiencing a loss, or going through difficult times or

SOCIAL CONCERNS
The Poor Box for the month of June is for Bethesda
Cares, a non-profit which serves the county’s homeless
and working poor.
Are you cleaning out your closets? Our Lady of
Lourdes on East West Highway has a homeless program
providing meals on Sunday nights and a “clothes closet”
where needy guests can obtain donated clothing? Men's
Clothing is always needed. You can bring items to Our
Lady of Lourdes school cafeteria from 4:30 to 5:30 PM
on Sundays and ask for location of drop off. Or you can

Bethesda House - thank you to all the volunteers for
another successful first half of the year providing
dinners for 20 men in Bethesda House. A calendar for
July to the end of the year is posted in the church
vestibule to be signed according to your availability. As
usual, three volunteers are requested for the third
Tuesday of each month. Important reminder: we are
serving dinner for 20 BIG men each time. Let’s keep this

Gabriel Update: our current Gabriel Network mom
delivered a baby boy of 61/2 pounds . Initially, the
infant was hospitalized for a few days but mom and son
are reunited and doing well. A big thanks from the mom
and her family to the parishioners who assisted by
donating many necessary items. As always, your
continued prayers are needed and requested.
The second collection this weekend is for Peter’s Pence.
Gifts to this annual collection help the Holy Father
support victims of war, oppression, natural disasters,
and others most in need of assistance. Our participation
in this collection gives us an opportunity to be a witness
of Our Lord’s love and mercy for the vulnerable and
suffering around the world.
The parish community of St. Bartholomew
extends its deepest sympathy and prayers
to the family and friends of long time
parishioner Joseph Ciardi, who died on
June 10, 2016. A Funeral Mass for Joseph
was celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church
on June 21. We also extend our sympathy
and prayers to the family and friends of
Mary “Bobbie” McGarry who died on June
13, and whose Funeral Mass was celebrated at St.
Bartholomew Church on June 16. Please keep the souls
of the deceased and their family and friends in your
prayers.
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
If you would like to sponsor flowers on the altar in
memory of loved ones, living or deceased, please print
your name, phone number, and the occasion or loved one
you wish to remember on a purple Flower Contribution
envelope, which you will find in the church vestibule.
Minimum contribution for two vases on the main altar
is between $90—100. Please drop off your envelope in
the collection basket, or call the parish office, 301-2297933, and your request will be posted in the weekly
bulletin. We can only honor one individual request per
weekend, so please bear in mind that, sometimes, the
date you require may already be taken. Also, for your
information, we will not be able to accept requests for
the sponsoring of flowers on specific liturgical dates.
St. Bart's Middle School Youth Group: we are 6th,
7th and 8th graders interested in serving our neighbor,
playing together and getting to know Our Lord Jesus

SOCCER - we are now registering for fall Soccer for

CROSS COUNTRY – after yet another successful
season, we are now registering for the upcoming fall
cross country season. If you are a new runner or skilled
we welcome all to come run with us. We will also have a
"Marathon Challenge" over the summer break for the
runners who sign up. Each runner can log the miles they
run over the summer totaling 26.2 miles over the
course. Those that complete the 26.2 miles will be
recognized at the first practice. Again, the link has

The Faith and Fiction Book Group meets six times during
the academic year to discuss works by noted Catholic
authors or works that broadly deal with religious or
spiritual themes. The dates and titles for the upcoming

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Have you been considering a Catholic education but have

million in scholarships for low-income elementary and high

Domestic Church Day: Corporal Works of Mercy - the
Saint John Paul II National Shrine invites families, engaged
couples, and young adults to attend a Domestic Church Day on
Saturday, July 9, from 12:30-5:30pm, focusing on the Corporal
Works of Mercy following the theme of the Jubilee Year of
Mercy. The half-day retreat includes talks for different age
groups, including a talk for couples, “How the Corporal Works
of Mercy Strengthen Marriage” by Dr. Jonathan Reyes,
Director of Justice, Peace, and Human Development at the
USCCB. Following the talks, everyone will have opportunities
for confession, praise and worship, and Eucharistic Adoration.
The day will conclude with a picnic (please bring your own food)
on the beautiful lawn and a fun corporal work of mercy for
everyone. The cost per family is $15, engaged couples $10,
and young adults $5, which covers all of the costs of the day,
including items for the corporal work of mercy and drinks for

Jesús, libremente, se dirige hacia Jerusalén para dar
cumplimiento al designio del Padre: “cuando se iba
cumpliendo el tiempo de ser llevado al cielo, Jesús tomó
la decisión de ir a Jerusalén.” Mientras iban de camino, le
dijo uno: Te seguiré a donde vayas. Jesús responde que
para seguirlo, hay que ser libres como Él que no tiene
donde reclinar la cabeza. Seguir a Cristo supone quedar
liberado de la esclavitud de los bienes de este mundo y
ordenarlos rectamente. Cristo, según los designios de
Padre, llamará a los Apóstoles para que, dejándolo todo,
le sigan, sean de los suyos y vivan su estilo de vida.
Nosotros, también seremos llamados por Cristo en el
Bautismo, para dejar todo lo que no sea Él para seguirlo y
conformar nuestra vida con el Evangelio. Seguir a Cristo
nos hace libres. Cristo nos da la libertad con su pasión y
muerte porque nos libera de la esclavitud del pecado.
