Curt Labitzke nació en Queens, Nueva York, en 1958. Aprendió a
dibujar y pintar con su padre, pintor y diseñador gráfico en la ciudad de
Nueva York. Labitzke realizó un Máster en Bellas Artes en la
Universidad de Notre Dame en 1984, especializándose en arte gráfico,
pintura y dibujo. Durante los últimos quince años Labitzke ha viajado
extensamente por Europa.
Revisando su obra, se observa un romanticismo a veces melancólico,
inspirado en numerosas fuentes, que incluyen frescos de murallas
antiguas, paneles medievales de témpera, dibujos del Quattrocento, y
una variedad de proyectos de restauración que ha experimentado
durante sus viajes por Italia y España. Su paleta de colores tiene rasgos
reminiscentes del período Rococó, a menudo suave y evocadora, con
referentes en la pintura medieval en la utilización del dorado y la
pintura bizantina en paneles.
`Un alma en común. Retratos de España´, parte de la base del interés
por parte del artista en utilizar el retrato y la postura de la figura como
medio para expresar una narrativa implícita. Estas imágenes a gran
escala, potencian una gran variedad de interpretaciones que suelen
provocar empatía del espectador hacia el sujeto. Destacaría su

A través del proceso de grabado en metal (intaglio), las impresiones

moderno.
ARTIST: CURT LABITZKE
Curt Labitzke was born in Queens, New York, 1958. He first learned to
draw and paint by apprenticing with his father who was a painter and
graphic designer in New York City. He received his MFA from The
University of Notre Dame in 1984 with a focus on printmaking, painting
and drawing. For the past fifteen years Labitzke has traveled
extensively throughout Europe.
Labitzke’s work, romantic and at times melancholy, is inspired by
numerous sources including dilapidated ancient wall frescos, medieval
tempera panels, drawings from the quattrocento and a variety of
restoration projects experienced while traveling throughout Italy and
Spain. His color palate is reminiscent of the Rococo period, often soft
and atmospheric, with suggestions of the opulence of gilded medieval
and byzantine panel paintings.
`A Shared Soul. Portraits of Spain´, is primarily influenced by
Labitzke’s interest in using the portrait and posture of the figure as a
means of conveying an implied narrative. These large-scale images
encourage a wide variety of interpretations that often provoke empathy
for the subject within the viewer. His work is also informed by an
ongoing interest in art history, including Roman portrait busts,
Renaissance drawing, Neo-classical painting and the world of
contemporary photography. The pieces in this exhibit are inspired by
one of Spain’s master painters, Francisco de Goya.
All prints were made using the intaglio printmaking process, from hand
carved plexiglass plates.
