Conversation Program “The artist is who sets the truth about the world” Key figures in the international arts scene, such as Pablo Helguera, artist and director of adult education programs at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Pablo León de la Barra, curator of the Guggenheim UBS MAP, Nueva York; Catherine Millet, founder and director of Art Press; Damián Ortega, renowned Mexican artist, shall speak about the artist’s role, field, and current proposals. With the intention of bringing the local public closer to contemporary art’s language and semantics, this year’s Ch.ACO Discussion Program is entitled, “The artist is who sets the truth about the world”, a phrase by German writer Thomas Mann that inspires this lecture series, with questions such as: Is it true that artists are the ones who set this truth? From what place is this done? What does it mean for an artist to have his or her work belong to a collection? What is the artist’s role as an agent for social reflection? Is the term “artist” redefined in contemporary practice? A series of artists and intellectuals from different areas shall participate in a total of nine roundtables, which shall discuss these guidelines and analyze them from philosophical, political, mystical, social, and emotional perspectives. Edited by Irene Abujatum, executive director of FAVA CHILE, this program shall include the following guests: Pablo Helguera, Mexican artist and director of adult education programs at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Pablo León de la Barra, curator of the Guggenheim UBS MAP, New York, and of Casa Franca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Catherine Millet, writer, and founder and director of Art Press, Paris; Damián Ortega, renowned Mexican visual artist who shall be presenting his publishing project, Alias; Graciela Sacco, Argentinean visual artist; Paco Barragán, curator of visual arts at Centro Cultura Matucana 100; César Gabler, Chilean visual artist; Voluspa Jarpa, Chilean visual artist; Ana María Risco, journalist and Ph.D in Philosophy, with a mention in Aesthetics and Art Theory; Sergio Delgado, professor of Romance Languages and Literature at Harvard University; Alberto Mayol, Chilean sociologist and political analyst; Camilo Yañez, Chilean visual artist; and Ernesto Ottone, Chile’s current Minister of Culture. The programming for the Ch.ACO’15 auditorium as follows: ·∙ FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th ·∙ 17:00 hrs / “The Artist in Contemporary Art Collections” Pablo León de la Barra, curator of the Guggenheim UBS MAP for Latin America and Casa Franca in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, speaks to Chilean artist Sebastián Preece about what it means for an artist to have his or her work belong to a collection, and about the dialogue between artworks, artists, and curators. 18:00 hrs / “Artistic and Political Freedoms” Chilean sociologist and political analyst Alberto Mayol speaks to Chilean artist Voluspa Jarpa about art’s symbolic function, in order to face, visualize, and analyze discourses and systems of power. They shall address the limitations that the system sets out for artistic production through diverse coercion mechanisms. 19:00 hrs / “Transparency in the World of Arts and Culture: a Radiograph’s Results” Vivianne Blanlot, president of the Transparency Council, Nicolas Cobo, president of the Fundacion de Artes Visuales Asociados (FAVA CHILE), and a representative from the National Council for Arts and Culture (CNCA), shall discuss good practices for the democratization of information. •
·∙ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26th ·∙ 15.00 horas / “Democratization of Art and the Importance of the Internet” Elisa Massardo, editor of Arte al Límite, Leo Prieto, director and founder of Betazeta, and Toty Zamudio, visual artist, shall talk about the movement of social media and the accessibility to all kinds of audiences surrounding subjects related to the arts scene and its diffusion. 16:00 hrs / “Conceptual Stumblings: a North-­‐South Dialogue on Experimentalism in Chile” Journalist and Philosophy Ph.D Ana María Risco speaks to Sergio Delgado, Romance Language and Literature Professor at Harvard University, as part of the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende (MSSA) “Debate and Thought” Program, organized in collaboration with the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University (DRCLAS), Universidad Catolica’s Art Faculty and Universidad Alberto Hurtado’s Art Department, all within the general framework of Conceptual Stumblings, an investigation project. 17:00 hrs / “How To Do Things with the Word Artist” Chilean artist Cesar Gabler speaks to Pablo Helguera, Mexican artist and director of adult education programs at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), about the transformation of the term artist and it’s redefinition in contemporary practices, in an attempt to dilapidate the terminology’s future. 18:00 hrs / “Amicably Plagiarized Seminal Information” Chilean artist Camilo Yañez speaks to Mexican artist Juan Pablo Langlois about artistic and editorial practices. 19.00 horas / “Curatorial Residency” Chilean curator Carolina Castro Jorquera presents the “Curatorial Residency” Program, and talks about the curator-­‐gallery-­‐artist relationship with Marta Ramos-­‐Izquierdo from Vermelho gallery, Brazil, and Chilean artist Nicolás Franco. ·∙ SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th ·∙ 17:00 hrs / “The Relationship Between a Contemporary Artist’s Manual Labor and Spiritual Work” Chilean curator Carolina Castro Jorquera speaks to Chilean artist Maria Ignacia Edwards about the important metaphysical repercussion of artistic work in the piece of art. 18:00 hrs / “The Contemporary Artist During a New Era for Culture in Chile” Catherine Millet, founder and director of Art Press (Paris), speaks to Chile’s current Minister of Culture, Ernesto Ottone, about how the new ministry approaches the artist’s role.
