he first reading is about doubt, believe it or
not, and the Gospel reading is about a faithfulness in prayer that I call a “holy insistence.” What do these themes have in common?
First: the doubt of the first reading. Note the chapter--Chapter 17 of Exodus--that means the Israelites
are in their first week in the desert--they are a struggling mass of escaped slaves, weak and weary, and
no one should kick them while they’re down. Yet,
at the same time, they’ve seen the parting of the
Sea, the miraculous gift of Mannah, and water from
the rock. Yet, they doubted. Why did Amalek attack? The Text right before our opening verses
says, “they asked ‘is God among us?’” HOW, after
all those miracles, could they be so blockheaded as
to ask that question--to entertain doubt? So,
Amalek is a real king who attacked weak people
when they were down, but he also represents what
we allow to happen to ourselves--we let doubt
creep into our minds even though we are the
beneficiaries of so much of God’s richest gifts!
Moses goes to the mountain to pray, so that they
will have to look “upward” to see him, and in doing
so, their eyes will always be heavenward. That’s
Jesus’ point in the Gospel--when our conversation
is “heavenward,” results come--so “be persistent,
even when it’s inconvenient, for God is always “in
our midst” waiting for our call.
Fr. Bill Axe
L
nosotros” esperando nuestra llamada.

oday is World Mission Sunday and month,
and our readings speak to us of prayer. We
are urged to pray always and keep God present in our minds as we labor and work. Yet we
must do more than just pray. We are urged this Sunday to remember those in our mission countries who
depend on our generosity to sustain them. America
has always been generous to countries not as fortunate as us, and I ask you today to remember those
places and people by giving in the second collection
to the World Mission Office. You know that this
money goes directly to them and most of it is spent
on the missions. Thank you for your mindfulness of
our poor and your generosity.

Today is World Mission Sunday! We are called to this Eucharistic Celebration — and invited to “do good on earth,”
to be missionary by putting our faith into action in support
of the work of missionaries — like Sister Clara who rescues
girls from human trafficking in India, giving them a loving
home. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday support
the tireless work of so many priests, religious and lay leaders
around the world as they offer practical, emotional and spiritual care to communities, children and families in desperate
need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances. For more information visit:

SAVE A BABY: NO BED SHARING
Did you know that October is sudden infant death
syndrome (SIDS) awareness month. Every week
one baby dies in Los Angeles County while sleeping. Do not bed share with your baby. Your baby
should always sleep on his or her back for naps and at
night. The back sleep position is the safest, with no
increased risk of choking on vomit. Place your baby on
a crib alone and do not use pillows, blankets, quilts, or
other soft surfaces. Keep soft items away from baby’s
face. Make sure anyone who takes care of your baby
knows this. Learn more visit:

ICONOGRAPHY: A STUDIO ART RETREAT
Annette Lawrence, DMJ
7:00 pm Friday, Oct 25 to 1:30 pm Friday, Nov 1
Although they come from the orthodox tradition, Icons
have something to say to all Christians. Icons are much
more than an art form; they are actually a theological
expression in an age-old language. Their primary purpose is to enable a face-to-face encounter with a holy person or a sacred event. Icons take us beyond themselves
into the mystery of the Incarnation and the salvation of
humankind. Painting an Icon is a journey. While we
work on Icons, they also work on us. As we work from
dark to light, from chaos to beauty, God can work in us
to make our darkness into light, the chaos in our lives
and world into the images of His Beauty. During this
week we will journey from a bare board to a completed
Icon, learning and praying as we paint.
Cost: per person/shared $1,115 ($1,065 if paid by Oct 4)
single room $1,290 ($1,240 if paid by Oct 4)
No
edredones u otras superficies suaves.
