Time.notebook
To tell whether it is AM or PM we
use different phrases that tell us
what part of the day.
Time- La hora
To tell time in Spanish we first start with the hour.
For the 1 o'clock hour we use
"Es la una." (It's one o'clock)
For hours 2-12 we use
"Son las _____." (It's ____ o'clock)
Por ejemplo:
For the morning hours of 12am -12pm
we use "de la manana"
For afternoon hours 12pm-7pm
we use "de la tarde"
5:00 Son las cinco.
9:00 Son las nueve.
1:00 Es la una.
For evening and night hours 7pm-12am
we use "de la noche"
Son las tres.
Por ejemplo:
7:00am Son las siete de la manana.
1:00 pm Es la una de la tarde.

When it is exactly half past the hour, like
1:30 or 5:30 or 10:30, in Spanish we tell the
hour then add on "y media."
Son las dos y media.
Por ejemplo:
6:30 Son las seis y media.
1:30 Es la una y media.
12:30 Son las doce y media.
For 12:00 pm (noon)- we use "mediodia"
For 12:00 am (midnight)- we use "medianoche"
media/medio mean mid or middle, dia means day,
noche means night, so these literally translate to
midday and midnight.
Try these:
4:00 am Son las cuatro de la manana
3:30 pm Son las tres y media de la tarde.
10:00 pm Son las diez de la noche.
The Minute.
Before we can discuss the minutes of the
hour we must know that there are two types
of clocks, and therefore two ways to
express time.The two ways are
digital and analog.
12:00pm Es mediodia
11:30am Son las once y media de la manana.
2:30 pm Son las dos y media de la tarde.
DIGITAL TIME
Digital time is simple.
You first tell the hour, then "y", then the minute.
Por ejemplo:
3:26 Son las tres y veintiseis.
7:48 Son las siete y cuarenta y ocho
1:14 Es la una y catorce.

Analog Time
Analog Time
For minutes 31-59 we tell how many
minutes it is until the next hour.
To do this we move the hour up by 1,
then "menos", then the number of
minutes until that hour.
Analog time is a little different so let's break it into parts to
help us understand easier.
For the first 29 minutes we tell time the same way we do
with digital, we tell the hour, then "y", then the minute.

4:50 Son las cinco menos diez. (It's ten until 5.)
9:35 Son las diez menos veinticinco. (It's 25 until 10.)
