Stephen: A Young Community Leader

“I love Denver…and I don’t think I ever want to leave Denver,” said Stephen Brayshaw, a
sophomore at CEC Middle College. Stephen is planting some strong community roots to make
sure he always has a place to call home in Denver, and in the Westwood neighborhood.
When Stephen was in 3rd grade, his family moved to a home just a couple of blocks from
Munroe Elementary School, where he began to show his natural leadership skills.
“My Dad has always been a hard worker, so has my Mom, and it has kind of rubbed off
on me, so I know what it feels like to earn a hard dollar.” Having strong positive influences
in his life has helped Stephen work towards creating an already impressive resume for a
high school student. “I was taught that anything I want in life, I have to work for it, it’s not just
going to be given to me, so I have to go out there and get it.” The strong work ethic taught
by his parents has also helped his brother who is in college at Alabama State in Montgomery,
Alabama and his sister who is a junior at Lincoln High School.
Stephen has shown his community leadership skills since his sixth
grade year when he began working at Munroe Elementary
after school helping Ms. Winslow shelve books in the library.
Four years later, Stephen can be found at Munroe everyday
after school continuing to work in the library, doing other
community work, or playing sports.
Beginning just a couple of weeks ago, Stephen began working
for Groundwork Denver’s Green Team – a team of youth
environmentalists. The Green Team has played an important
role in the building and planting of three gardens in the
Westwood neighborhood. The team has helped setup the
Munroe Elementary garden, the Kepner Middle School Garden,
and the Community Garden in the neighborhood (at the corner
of Tennessee and Lowell). The Green Team is very eco-friendly
and team members ride their bikes to all of their jobs from
their Highlands neighborhood office. “I think it’s pretty good
because we all just like to have a good time and we also work
hard while we are doing it. And with the whole bike thing,
that’s pretty good because we get some exercise and were not Stephen working in the Munroe Garden
using a bunch of gas and polluting the air.”
It is very impressive to see Stephen working and to hear his enthusiasm for the work he does
and the opportunity he has to help a community he cares about. His strong upbringing has
really taught him the importance of making a difference. As he grew older and more mature
Stephen began to notice the graffiti in the neighborhood as well as gang activity. Just as his
parents instilled a strong work ethic, they also helped shape Stephen into a positive thinker.
“Negative things like gangs and all that – I’ve never been into that because I would feel like a
follower and I have always been my own person. I like to lead people and not follow them.”
Stephen Brayshaw has a story that more people could take after. He really understands
that his ability to give back can go such a long way – and he also thinks that others need to
understand that too. “If people want to change, they can change. It’s just a matter of when
they want to do it… You don’t have to do a big part, you don’t have to take a lead role,
but any little time or task you can do can help out.”

My Neighborhood, My Health
Colorado’s Mini World Cup!

As the world prepares for an historic World Cup in June,
Colorado residents have their own World Cup to get excited
for. This summer kids and adults from all over Denver will be
playing in the “Mini World Cup Colorado 2010”.
This event will follow the same format as the World Cup in
South Africa, but the teams will be made up of Denver-area
residents! Participating teams will have the opportunity to
represent the country of their choice.
The Mini World Cup will be May 22nd to July 4th for adults
and from June 15th to August 7th for children. The games
will take place in the VISUM sports complex located on the
northwestern corner of the intersection of Sheridan and West
6th Avenue.
The event will feature much more than just soccer games. There
will also be a great multicultural festival such as music and
cultural presentations.
The Mini World Cup will have three categories in the adult
Division: Men Open, Women Open and Men over 35 years. It
will consist of 32 teams with 10 players per team.
The Mini World Cup for children will have three categories:
under 8, under 11 and under 14 years of age.
Each team will receive uniforms. The games will be recorded
and available on the Internet so family and friends can watch
the games from anywhere in the world!
The winning team of each category in the adult divisions will
receive a $ 2,000 grand prize in cash. Children divisions will be
awarded medals, trophies and quality sports team.
The cost to register will be approximately $40 per player for
adults and $25 per player for children.

Seeds of Health
Irma and Alex Gonzalez, the subjects of last month’s cover
story enjoy making this cactus salad with fresh vegetables
from their backyard garden!
Cactus Salad
Recipe provided by Irma Gonzalez
1 jar of nopales (cactus fruit or prickly pear)
2 medium red tomatoes
1/2 onion
1 or 2 jalepeños
1/4 bunch cilantro
1/2 cup lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
Rinse the cactus with water and put it on a medium plate.
Chop the onion, tomato, jalepeños, and cilantro into small
pieces (like pico de gallo). Combine all ingredients and
add salt and pepper. Enjoy a healthy salad!

Festival at Kepner Brings Hundreds of
Residents Together

“We need some more fun in this neighborhood,” said Michelle Schoen,
resident and volunteer at the Kepner Community Garden. That’s
exactly what about 300 Westwood residents did on Saturday April
17, when they gathered at Kepner Middle School for the Spring
Festival. The festival was a celebration of the community and the
Kepner garden.
Irma Gonzalez, who lives nearby, attended the festival and said “it
was really nice. There was music, the game with the water balloons
for the kids, there was lots of food, dancing, there was a free yard
sale, the applications for the backyard gardens, and piñatas for the
kids.”
The festival was a fun community gathering with people from
throughout the Westwood community and beyond. “I saw lots of
people I didn’t know. Everyone seemed happy, enjoying the events
that were there,” said Irma.
Part of the celebration was for the Kepner Community Garden. To
celebrate the gardening season, volunteers helped to prepare the
garden, planted an apple tree, and shared gardening tips. Also, free
seeds were given out so families can plant fruits and vegetables at
home. “My son liked that a lot,” said Cintya Cereceres who attended
the festival with her kids.
But, the event was about much more than fun and gardening. According
to Michelle, it was also about getting “more community involvement
with the things that are going on and letting people know what’s
available to them in the neighborhood. To get that many people
together was a really good thing. That doesn’t happen often.”
Michelle hopes that bringing people together will have a positive
impact on the community. “I think we just need to be more neighborly
with each other and get to know each other. I think we need to stop
being afraid of our neighbors. Because you don’t speak English,
or don’t speak Spanish, or don’t speak Vietnamese or whatever
language, doesn’t mean we cant still stop and talk to each other. We
can find ways of doing it.”

Stephen: Un líder joven de la comunidad

“Me encanta Denver...y creo que nunca podré dejar Denver”, dijo Stephen Brayshaw, estudiante
de segundo año en el CEC Middle College. Stephen está plantando unas raíces fuertes en la
comunidad para asegurarse de que siempre tenga un lugar al cual pueda llamar hogar en
Denver, y en el barrio de Westwood. Cuando Stephen estaba en 3er grado, su familia se mudó
a una casa ya un par de cuadras de la Escuela Primaria Munroe, donde el comenzó a mostrar
sus habilidades de liderazgo natural.
“Mi papá siempre ha sido un gran trabajador, también lo ha sido mi madre, y se me contagio a
mí, así que sé lo que se siente al ganar un dólar.” Tener una fuerte influencia positiva en su vida
le ha ayudado el trabajo de Stephen hacia la creación de un curriculum vitae ya impresionante
para un estudiante de secundaria. “Me enseñaron que lo que quiero en la vida, tengo que
trabajar por ello, no sólo se me va ser entregado, así que tengo que salir a buscarlo.” La fuerte
ética de trabajo que le enseñaron sus padres también ha ayudó a su hermano que está en la
universidad en el estado de Alabama en Montgomery, Alabama, y su hermana, que esta en
tercero de secundaria en Lincoln High School.
Stephen ha demostrado su capacidad de liderazgo la comunidad desde el sexto grado cuando
comenzó a trabajar en la biblioteca en la Primaria Munroe
después de la escuela guardando libros a lado de la Sra. Winslow.
Cuatro años después, Stephen se encuentra en Munroe todos los
días después de la escuela y continúa trabajando en la biblioteca,
haciendo trabajo en la comunidad y practicando deportes.
Hace un par de semanas atrás, Stephen comenzó a trabajar
para el Equipo de Cimentación Verde de Denver - un equipo
de jóvenes ambientalistas. El equipo verde ha jugado un papel
importante en la construcción y la plantación de tres jardines en
el barrio de Westwood. El equipo ha ayudado a configurar el
jardín de la Escuela Primaria de Munroe, la Escuela Media de
Kepner Jardín, y el Jardín de la Comunidad en el barrio (en la
esquina de Tennessee y Lowell). El equipo verde es muy respetuoso
del medio ambiente y los miembros del equipo andan en sus
bicicletas a todos sus trabajos desde sus oficinas en el barrio de
Highlands. “Creo que es bastante bueno porque todos al igual
que tener un buen tiempo, también trabajamos duro mientras lo
estamos haciendo. Y con lo de la bicicleta, es bastante bueno,
porque uno hace un poco de ejercicio sin tener que usar un Stephen está trabajando en el jardín
montón de gas y contaminar el aire.”

Es muy impresionante ver a Stephen trabajando y de escuchar
su entusiasmo por el trabajo que hace y la oportunidad que tiene para ayudar a una comunidad
que le preocupa. Su crianza le ha enseñado la importancia de hacer una diferencia. A medida
que la crece y madura - Stephen empezó a notar el graffiti en el barrio, así como las actividades
de pandillas. Al igual que sus padres le inculcaron una fuerte ética de trabajo, también le
enseñaron a ser una persona que piensa positivamente. “Las cosas negativas como las pandillas
y todo eso - Nunca he estado en eso porque me siento como un seguidor y siempre he sido mi
propia persona. Me gusta guiar a las personas y no seguirlas.”
Stephen Brayshaw tiene una historia que más gente podría aprender de el. Él realmente entiende
que su capacidad de dar puede llevarlo lejos - y él también piensa que los demás tienen que
entender esto. “Si la gente quiere cambiar, se puede cambiar. Es sólo cuestión de cuando quieren
hacerlo...Usted no tiene que hacer una gran parte, no tiene que tomar un papel principal,
pero un poquito de tiempo o una tarea que puedas hacer ayudara.”

¡El Mundialito de Colorado!

A medida que el mundo se prepara para una Copa Mundial histórica
en junio, los residentes de Colorado tienen su propio Mundial para
emocionarse. Este verano los niños y adultos de todo Denver jugarán
en el “Mini Copa del Mundo de Colorado de 2010”.
Este evento seguirá el mismo formato que la Copa Mundial en
Sudáfrica 2010, pero los equipos se compone de los residentes del
área de Denver! Los equipos participantes tendrán la oportunidad de
representar al país de su elección.
La Mini Copa Mundial será del 22 de mayo al 4 de julio para
adultos y desde el 15 de junio a 7 de agosto para los niños. Los juegos
se llevarán a cabo en las facilidades deportivas de VISUM ubicado
en la esquina noroeste de la intersección de Sheridan y la Avenida
6xta.
El evento contará con mucho más que sólo los partidos de fútbol.
También habrá una gran fiesta multicultural como la música y
presentaciones culturales.
La Mini Copa Mundial tendrá tres categorías en la división de adultos:
Abierto para Hombres, Abierto para Damas y Hombres mayores
de 35 años. Estará formados por 32 equipos con 10 jugadores por
equipo.
La Mini Copa Mundial para los niños tendrá tres categorías: menores
de 8 años, menores de 11 años y menores de 14 años de edad.
Cada equipo recibirá uniformes. ¡Los juegos serán grabados y están
disponibles en Internet para que la familia y los amigos puedan ver
los partidos desde cualquier parte del mundo!
El equipo ganador de cada categoría en las divisiones de adultos
recibirá un premio de 2.000 dólares en efectivo. Las divisiones de
niños serán premiados con medallas, trofeos y equipos deportivo de
calidad.
El costo de registración será de aproximadamente $ 40 por jugador
para adultos y $ 25 por jugador para los niños.

1/2 taza de jugo de limón
Sal y pimienta al gusto
Se enjuagan los nopales con agua y se ponen en
una bandeja mediana. Pique la cebolla, el tomate,
el chile, y el cilantro en trozos pequeñas como un
pico de gallo. Luego agrega los ingredientes a los
nopales y les pone sal y pimienta al gusto. Disfrute
de una ensalada saludable.

Festival en Kepner Une a
Cientos de Residentes

“Necesitamos un poco mas de diversión en este barrio”, dijo
Michelle Schoen, residente y voluntaria en el Jardín Comunitario de
Kepner. Eso es exactamente lo que unos 300 residentes Westwood
hicieron el sábado 17 de abril, cuando se reunieron en la Escuela
Secundaria de Kepner para la Fiesta de la Primavera. El festival
fue una celebración de la comunidad y del jardín de Kepner.
Irma González, que vive cerca, asistió al festival y dijo: “Estuvo
muy bonito todo. Había música, había globos para que los niños
se divirtieran, había mucha comida, el baile de la danza, había un
yard sale gratis, las aplicaciones para los huertos gratis en la casa,
y piñatas para los niños.”
El festival fue una reunión divertida con gente de toda la comunidad
de Westwood y más allá. “Mire mucha gente nueva. Se veía toda
la gente contenta, disfrutando de todos los eventos que había allí,”
dijo Irma.
Parte de la celebración era para el Jardín de Kepner Comunidad.
Para celebrar la temporada de jardinería, los voluntarios ayudaron
a preparar el jardín, plantando un manzano, compartieron consejos
de jardinería. Además, se regalaron semillas para que las familias
puedan plantar frutas y verduras en casa. “Eso le gusto mucho a mi
hijo”, dijo Cintya Cereceres que asistió a la fiesta con sus hijos.
Pero, el evento fue mucho más que diversión y la jardinería. Según
Michelle, también era de promover “más participación de la
comunidad con las cosas que están sucediendo y que la gente sepa
lo que está a su disposición en el barrio. Para que mucha gente se
una fue una cosa realmente buena. Esto no sucede a menudo. “
Michelle espera que el unir a las personas tendrá un impacto
positivo en la comunidad. “Creo que sólo tenemos que ser más una
vecindad que se conoce unos a otros. Creo que tenemos que dejar
de tener miedo de nuestros vecinos. Sólo porque usted no habla
inglés, o no habla español, o no habla vietnamés o cualquier otro
idioma, no quiere decir que no se puede parar y platicar con otros.
Podemos encontrar la manera de hacerlo.”
