Online Contributions
Anyone interested in making their weekly contributions to St.
Philip Neri electronically may call the Parish Pay program at

benefits greatly from the regularity of the system and detaches
the issue of church support from such factors as the weather,
vacations, etc.

Collection Report
Last weekend’s first collection totaled $4037.
Maintenance Collection
The monthly second collection for the maintenance and
repairs is taken this weekend. We ask you to be
mindful of the parish’s need for your real generosity.
Help us deal with our latest unexpected expense
($6850.00) in having to update the electrical boxes in the
rectory boiler room. The work was needed to
accommodate the new cables Con Edison had to install
to replace very old lines that failed two weekends ago,
leaving half the rectory in darkness.
Food Collection
Dear St. Philip Neri Parishioners,
May the Lord give you His Peace! Several times in
the past your parish has collected food for our “Pater Noster”
food pantry, and we are always grateful for your generosity.
As we approach Thanksgiving, we are hoping to provide our
neighbors with food for special meal and we wanted to share
our specific need for: can of corn, green beans, sweet potatoes,
gravy and cranberry sauce; boxes of mashed potatoes and
stuffing; and non-refrigerated dessert items. We are most
happy to receive any contribution of non-perishable food or
financial contributions for turkeys. We will gladly receive
these items through the weekend of November 14th and 15th.
Thank you!
We pray that God will reward your generosity abundantly.
Gratefully in Jesus,

November: Month of the Holy Souls
The parish visitors of Mary Immaculate, a wonderful
small community of Sisters with a convent here in the
Bronx, recently sent a letter inviting the recipients to
send the names of their deceased loved ones to the
sisters for their prayers. The letter encourages the use of
the following prayer of St. Gertrude the Great, a 13th
century Benedictine nun. According to tradition, our
Lord promised St. Gertrude that 1000 souls would be
released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly:
Eternal Father, I offer thee the Most
Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the masses said throughout
the whole world today, for all the holy souls
in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for
sinners in the universal church, those in my
own home and within my family. Amen
All Souls Indulgence
The Sisters also remind us that from November 1st to the
8th an indulgence applicable to a soul in purgatory may
be gained under these conditions: be in the state of
grace; visit a church or oratory (better still-attend mass
there) say one “Our Father” and the “Creed,” pray for
the Holy Father’s intentions and make a good
confession within about 20 days of Alls Soul’s Day.
All Souls Novena
A novena of nine masses for the Holy Souls began this
weekend. Those who use church offering envelopes will
have received in their packets an envelope on which to
write the names of those they wish to be remembered. A
supply of envelopes can be found in the church’s
vestibule. The names of those enrolled in the novena are
kept near the altar during the month of November.
God’s Love We Deliver
St. Philip Neri will host once more the meal deliveries
through God’s Love We Deliver Program on both
Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and Morning. This is a
wonderful opportunity to serve our Lord Jesus Christ by
giving back a little bit our time to serve the most in need.
Drivers, co-pilots and packers are needed! If you or
anyone you know is interested please contact the rectory
or Maria Mejía at 646-400-1800. “We will serve the
Lord.” Josh 24:24
Our Lady of the Divine Providence
On Sunday, November 15 at 4pm. the Archdiocesan
Committee for Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia
will sponsor the 34th annual mass in honor of Our Lady
of Divine Providence, patroness of Puerto Rico. The
committee will also hold its 30th annual banquet on
Friday November 13 at the Astoria World Manor. The
dinner will be preceded by a cocktail hour and there will
be an open bar all evening. Music will be provided by

batatas, salsa de arándanos y cajas de puré de papa y relleno;
THE LAST THINGS
During November we are particularly conscious of the debt of charity we owe not only
towards our deceased relatives and friends but to all of the faithful departed. November,
therefore, is an opportune time to review the great truths about what we call “the Last
Things,” that is, Death, the Particular Judgment, Purgatory, Heaven and the Final Judgment.
The citations below are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Death:
The Christian who unites his own death to the death of Jesus views it as a step towards him
and an entrance into eternal life. CCC #1020
The Particular Judgment:
Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine
grace manifested in Christ. The New Testament speaks of judgment primarily in its aspect of
the final encounter with Christ at his second coming, but also repeatedly affirms that each will
be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith. CCC#1021 (See
Luke 16:22, 23:24; Matthew
Each man receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his
death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ: either entrance into the
blessedness of heaven---through purification or immediately,—or immediate and everlasting
damnation. CCC#1022:
Heaven:
Those who die in God’s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live forever with
Christ. They are like God forever, for they “see him as he is,” face to face. CCC#1023 (See 1
John 3:2, 1 Corinthians 13:12, Revelations 22:4)
This perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity—this communion of life and love with the Trinity,
with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed—is called CCC#1024
God cannot be seen as he is, unless he himself opens up his mystery to man’s immediate
contemplation and gives him the capacity for it. The Church calls this contemplation of God in
his heavenly glory “the beatific vision.” CCC#1026
Purgatory:
All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of
their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo a purification, so as to achieve the
holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. CCC#1030
[In addition to by reference to certain texts of Scripture which speak of a cleansing fire, such
as 1 Cor 3:15 and 1 Peter 1:7] this teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the
dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture.CCC#1031 (See Marc 12:46)
Hell:
We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if
we sin gravely against him…To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s
merciful love means remaining separated from him forever by our own free choice. This state
of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God is called “hell.” CCC#1033
Final Judgment:
Postponed until next week!
