Avoid Scams! Don’t fall for a “Call from Immigration”
Scammers have recently latched onto a new
way to defraud people: they call immigrants to
tell them that they owe money to US
Citizenship and Immigration Service for
applications filed, or for fines due. Don’t be
fooled! The Immigration Service does NOT
initiate calls to anyone. If you receive a call
from someone purporting to be from the
Immigration Service, you know immediately
that it is a scam. Do not send money, ever.
One of our clients, Miguel, an applicant for a U
visa (the legal status granted to those who have
been victims of serious crimes and who have
cooperated with the investigation and
prosecution of the crime) got a call a few
months ago from a man who said he was
calling from the Immigration Service. The
caller told Miguel that he didn’t pay the
complete filing fee, and must send the money
immediately to an address in California. If he
didn’t pay the money, the caller said, he would
be deported. Miguel was cautious, and told the
caller to give him a number to call back to
confirm that he was indeed calling from the
Immigration Service.
The caller gave him an 800 number to call.
When Miguel called the number, a recording
came on: This is USCIS. Press one for Spanish
and two for English. When Miguel pressed 1,
the same man who called him came onto the
line, saying “Bueno?” Miguel told him that he
would check with his attorney first, and then
call the man again. Miguel then called me, and
I called the number immediately. A man
answered, just as when Miguel called. When I
spoke in English, asking the man from what
office he was calling, he hung up immediately.
The next day, when I called the number again,
it had been disconnected. The scammer had
obviously moved on to a different number.
If this happens to you, report the caller to law
enforcement authorities, which may include
the FBI, USCIS, the Washington State Attorney
General, and the Federal Trade Commission’s
Bureau of Consumer Protection, whose
Consumer Sentinel database is accessed by
criminal and civil law enforcement authorities
worldwide.

Los estafadores se han ingeniado una forma
nueva de estafar a las personas: ellos llaman a
inmigrantes para decirles que le deben dinero
al Servicio de ciudadanía e inmigración de
Estados Unidos (USCIS) para cubrir los costos

Miguel, recibió una llamada de un hombre que
dijo que estaba llamando del servicio de
inmigración (la Visa U es un estatus legal
otorgado a esas personas que han sido víctimas
de crímenes serios y que han cooperado con la
investigación y la persecución del crimen). La
persona que llamó a Miguel le dijo que no

había pagado la tarifa completa para procesar
su aplicación, y tendría que mandar el dinero
inmediatamente a una dirección en California.
Si no pagaba el dinero que le pedían, le dijo la
persona que llamó, seria deportado. Miguel fue
cuidadoso y le dijo a la persona que llamaba
que le diera un numero para poder regresarle
la llamada para confirmar que si le estaba
llamando del servicio de inmigración.

ese número, contestó una operadora diciendo:
Este es el servicio de inmigración, oprima el
número uno para español, y dos para inglés.
Miguel oprimió el número uno ya la misma

diciendo “¿bueno?” Miguel le digo que
consultaría con su abogada primero, y le
