Dear Parents and Guardians:
We survived Snowzilla and after a week off of school (Winter Break Part II), students and staff are getting back
in the swing of things. We have now begun the third marking period. Report cards will be distributed on
February 10th. A big thanks to Jackie Kreimer and the building service team for their hard work in clearing our
walkways so that students and staff could return safely to school. My message to parents this month is do not
forget that you are a teacher too. Parents/Guardians are a child’s first teacher. Don’t take for granted the
everyday opportunities to teach your child about whatever you deem important or influential. Parents reinforce
and cultivate a child’s curiosity. Your child is learning to expand their vocabulary when you talk with them
about their day. Your child is learning language and literacy when you provide a print-rich environment and a
variety of writing tools to explore the written world. Your child is learning to be confident when you give them
plenty of opportunities to experience many different environments and discover new things. Your child is
learning mathematics when you plan meals, cook and bake together or play board games using dice or spinners.
Learning happens with the everyday moments you spend with your child, take advantage of that time.

News That You Can Use:




Valentine’s Day parties will be held on February 12th from 2:15-3:15 PM. Students may be asked to
send in a monetary donation to cover the cost for snacks. Only store bought food and snacks may be
served at the parties.
End of Second Marking Period Town Meetings Schedule:
February 23rd: 9:15-Third Grade; 2:30-First Grade
February 24th: 9:15-Fourth Grade; 2:30- Second Grade
February 26th: 9:15-Fifth Grade
Parents are welcome to attend.
Fifth Grade Middle School Choice notifications will be mailed home next week. If you have a
question, please call the school and ask to speak to our counselor Mrs. Finley.
Montgomery County parents/guardians who wish to request a Change of School Assignment (COSA),
for their children from their home school may begin the process from February 1st through April 1st.
Assignment changes for students from one school to another are permitted under the following limited
circumstances:
*Younger sibling wanting to attend the school of an older sibling in the regular/general program,
if the older sibling will be attending the requested school the following school year, absent a
boundary change;
*A continuation in a feeder pattern from middle to high school, except when affected by
boundary change, application program acceptance, or Consortium Choice guidelines;

*When a family moves within Montgomery County, preference to remain in the original school
will be considered to complete the current school year only;
*A documented, unique hardship situation.
School system transportation is not provided for COSA students.

Budget Meetings: Five Education Budget Meetings, presented by Montgomery County
Councilmember Craig Rice, MCPS Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers, and Montgomery College
President DeRionne Pollard, are scheduled for February and March. Attendees can find out how budget
decisions are made, what the county is doing today to get ready for FY 2017 and beyond, and the
opportunities residents have to influence budget decisions. The meetings will take place from 6:30 to
8:00 p.m. at the following locations:
*February 17, Montgomery College (Germantown Campus), BE Building, Room 151, 20200
Observation Drive, Germantown
*February 24, Albert Einstein High School, 11135 Newport Mill Road, Kensington
*March 9, Gaithersburg High School, 101 Education Blvd., Gaithersburg
*March 16, Col. Zadok Magruder High School, 5939 Muncaster Mill Road, Rockville
*March 23, Thomas S. Wootton High School, 2100 Wootton Pkwy., Rockville
The County Executive will announce his Recommended FY 2017 Operating Budget on March 15.
In April, the County Council will hold public hearings and approve the operating budget in May.

Arrival and Dismissal Times: Arrival and dismissal are very busy times around the school campus.
With the winter weather, it has become even more hectic. Please make sure that you are demonstrating
patience when dropping off and picking up your child. Safety is the number one concern. Students
should not be crossing the parking lot or entering the street to get into cars. It is also important that
adults model patience and courtesy to each other. Honking horns and cutting off others with cars does
not demonstrate acceptable behavior. Remember, the children are watching.

Estimados Padres y Tutores:
Sobrevivimos la nevada monstruosa y después de una semana fuera de la escuela (parte II de vacaciones de
invierno), los estudiantes y el personal está regresando a su lugar. Ahora hemos comenzado el tercer período de
calificaciones. Las boletas se distribuirán el 10 de febrero. Muchas gracias a Jackie Kreimer y el personal de
servicio por su duro trabajo en la limpieza de nuestros caminos para que los estudiantes y el personal podrían
regresar con seguridad a la escuela. Mi mensaje a los padres este mes es que no olviden que ustedes también
son profesores. Los padres son el primer maestro del niño. No deje pasar las oportunidades cotidianas para
enseñar a su hijo sobre lo que usted considere importante o influyente. Los padres refuerzan y cultivan la
curiosidad del niño. Su hijo está aprendiendo a expandir su vocabulario cuando hablamos con ellos sobre su día.
Su hijo está aprendiendo lenguaje y alfabetización cuando proporcionan un ambiente rico en letras y una gran
variedad de herramientas de escritura para explorar el mundo escrito. Su hijo está aprendiendo a ser seguros
cuando se les dan muchas oportunidades para experimentar muchos entornos diferentes y descubrir cosas
nuevas. Su hijo está aprendiendo matemáticas cuando usted planea la comida, cocina y hornean juntos o juegan

Fiestas de San Valentín se celebrarán el 12 de febrero de 2:15-3:15 se la tarde. A los estudiantes se les
pedirá que envíen una donación monetaria para cubrir los gastos de las festividades. Sólo alimentos y
aperitivos comprados en la tienda se pueden servir en las fiestas.
Reconocimientos para el final del segundo período de calificaciones:
23 de febrero a las 9:15 para tercer grado; a las 2:30 para primer grado
24 de febrero a las 9:15 para cuarto grado; a las 2:30 para segundo grado
26 de febrero a las 9:15 para quinto grado
Los padres son bienvenidos a asistir.
Elección de escuela para los estudiantes de quinto grado notificaciones se enviarán a la casa la

Los padres del Condado de Montgomery que deseen solicitar un Cambio de Escuela de Asignación
(COSA), para los niños de su escuela asignada pueden comenzar el proceso del 1 de febrero hasta el 1
de abril. Los Cambios de asignación para los estudiantes de una escuela a otra están permitidos bajo las
siguientes circunstancias limitadas:
* Hermano menor quiere asistir a la escuela de un hermano mayor en el programa general, si el hermano
mayor estará presente en la escuela solicitada el siguiente año escolar, ausencia de un cambio;

Reuniones del Presupuesto: Cinco reuniones sobre el presupuesto educacional, presentadas por el
concejal del condado de Montgomery, Craig Rice, el Superintendente Larry Bowers y el presidente de

El ejecutivo del condado anunciará sus recomendaciones para el presupuesto para el año fiscal 2017 el

El horario de Llegada y Salida: La llegada y la salida son tiempos muy ocupados alrededor de la
escuela. Con el tiempo de invierno, se ha convertido aún más agitado. Por favor, asegúrese de que están
demostrando paciencia al dejar y recoger a su hijo. La seguridad es la preocupación número uno. Los
estudiantes no deberían cruzar el estacionamiento o entrar en la calle para entrar en los coches. También
es importante que los adultos modelen paciencia y cortesía uno al otro. Haciendo sonar la bocina y
cortar en frente de otros con el coche no demuestra un comportamiento aceptable. Recuerde, los niños le
están mirando.
