Osceola County Assesses Effects of Hurricane Matthew
Osceola County Shelters Close, Mandatory Evacuation Ended
Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County continues its response to Hurricane Matthew Friday
morning, as the storm moves northward off Florida’s coast after a wobble to the East.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone facing this still dangerous storm,” said Commission
Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “I want to thank our residents for being prepared for this storm –
and urge them to continue to monitor the situation.”
The storm reached maximum winds of 32 mph early Friday morning at Kissimmee Gateway
Airport, with gusts in the upper 40s. At one point about 5,900 people were left without power but
power was quickly restored to approximately 2,700 in the KUA service area with OUC and Duke
Energy working on efforts that began at daylight.
In the meantime, approximately 1,000 people spent the night in shelters where being allowed to
go home and a mandatory evacuation was lifted for anyone in mobile or manufactured homes,
RV parks, campers or camp sites. There was little significant damage in early assessments. No
roads were closed during the storm and no flooding was reported in low-lying and flood-prone
areas. Officials caution people in those areas to stay alert, as water often rises in the days
following a heavy rain event. The National Weather Service in Melbourne reported rainfall of
3.2 inches for the county.
Government offices are expected to open on Monday with normal operating hours.
As many long-time residents of Osceola County can attest, the day after a hurricane are often
more complicated and dangerous than the storm itself.
Janer cautioned motorists venturing out on the roads after Matthew to drive defensively and to
treat any intersection without traffic lights as a four-way stop.
“You have survived the storm and we don’t want you to become a statistic after the fact,” Janer
said. “Please use good judgment in coming days – and if you see someone who needs help and
you can, offer your support.”
County officials stressed safety – whether in making repairs, hiring a contractor or using a
generator.

For those who didn’t receive garbage service on Thursday or Friday, haulers in the county will
have alternative pick-up will be made Saturday, conditions permitting. St. Cloud will operate
with a regular schedule but the transfer station will run extended hours on Saturday, from 7 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Kissimmee will resume its regular schedule on Monday.

Condado de Osceola, Florida – El Condado de Osceola continua su respuesta al huracán

En la mañana del viernes la tormenta alcanzó vientos máximos de 32 mph en el Aeropuerto de
Kissimmee Gateway. En algún momento aproximadamente 5,900 personas se quedaron sin
energía eléctrica pero fue restablecida a aproximadamente 2,700 en el área de servicio de KUA.

Melbourne informó de precipitaciones de 3.2 pulgadas para el condado.
Se espera abrir las oficinas gubernamentales el lunes con horario regular.
Como muchos residentes del Condado de Osceola pueden atestiguar, las semanas después de un
huracán son a menudo más complicadas y peligrosas que la tormenta misma.
A los automovilistas que tras Matthew aventuran en las carreteras Janer advirtió a manejar con
cuidado y a tratar cualquier intersección que tenga semáforo como un pare de cuatro vías.
“Si usted sobrevivió la tormenta, no queremos que se convierta en una estadística después del
hecho”, dijo Janer. — Por favor, utilice buen juicio en los próximos días y si usted ve a alguien
que necesite ayuda, ofrézcale su ayuda si puede.
Los oficiales del Condado también hablaron de seguridad – ya sea en la reparación, contratando
a un contratista o el uso de un generador.

Para aquellos que no recibieron servicios de recogido de basura el jueves o el viernes, si las
condiciones lo permiten, el recogido alterno se realizará el sábado. La Ciudad de St. Cloud
funcionará en horario regular pero la estación de transferencia continuará el sábado con horario
regular de 7 a.m. a 4 p.m. y Kissimmee volverá a su horario regular el lunes.
