Welcome, dear students! My name is John Brown and
I’m looking for a job as a creative. Help me go through
the job searching process.
Together, we will learn how to express our ­preferences,
likes and dislikes. Also, we will talk about free-time
­activities, food, nationalities and the routine.

Figure it out! Expressing preferences
John Brown seems to be a very good candidate for the
creative vacant because his preferences are a­ ppropriate
for the profile we need. When you want to talk about
your preferences, there are different verbs you can use,
and they are generally followed by another verb in the
gerund, or -ING form.
• love: I love learning new things.
John loves working outside.
• like: You like interacting with others.
José likes managing people.
• enjoy: They enjoy doing teamwork.
John enjoys creating new ideas.
• prefer: We prefer meeting out of the office.
He prefers spending his time in cultural events.

• don’t like: They don’t like being under pressure at work.
Charles doesn’t like eating at the office canteen.
• dislike: You dislike arguing with your colleagues.
Claudia dislikes staying late in the office.
• hate: I hate having an authoritarian boss.
She hates following other people’s commands.
Notice that when you use she, he or it the verb finishes
in -S or –ES, and when you use I, you, they, or we the
preference verb does not have -S or –ES at the end. Also,
see how, in negative sentences, there are two d
­ ifferent
forms:

For she, he or it: does not (doesn’t)
For I, you, they or we: do not (don’t) (
When we want to talk about the origin of people or things,
we use special words that work as adjectives. Let’s take a
look at the following examples.

enjoy cultural events, going to restaurants and nightlife,
but on Sundays, I prefer practicing sports or playing with
