Welcome to El Camino Refuge! Thank you for coming. Tonight, we will be
discussing how we are going to go about making the 33 Days to Morning Glory
retreat together.
The Retreat consists of three things--Reading, Pondering and Meeting.

The Reading is from the book, 33 Days to Morning Glory. You need to read this
book each day for 33 days. The book is short, and the daily reading is only about
two and a half pages. That’s less than 5 minutes a day of reading.

We will ponder each day’s readings by reflecting in our hearts what we have read
throughout the day. In fact, we will use Mary as our model and imitate her who

One practical point is that if our goal is to reflect on the daily reading, then it
would be a good idea to do the daily reading sometime in the morning, or the

The third part is our weekly Meeting here at El Camino Refuge. The meeting will
last less than 2 hours, and consist of three parts. 1) the Opening that will consist
of prayer and an introduction for that week’s discussion; 2) Discussion of the
previous week’s readings and the saint who guided us; and 3) a 30 minute talk on
DVD that will highlight key points about the upcoming week’s reading and saint.

Coming to the El Camino Refuge weekly meeting is not mandatory to prepare for
Marian consecration, it is highly encouraged so that we can prayer and deepen
our faith together while growing in Christian fellowship. Jesus is pleased
whenever 2 or 3 of us gather in His name because then not only is He spiritually
present, but we also have the opportunity to enter more fully into the abundant
life that He wishes for us. So, I applaud you for your presence here tonight, and
then encourage you to come as often as you are able in the weeks ahead.

So why consider being a part of this 33 days? Three Big Ideas to keep in mind

According to St John Paul II, ours is a time of extraordinary evil. For this reason, it

our day, and He’ll do it—gently, quickly, and easily—if only we let Him, if only
we’ll tap into the extraordinary graces he’s sending our way in the form of Marian
consecration. For Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary truly is ‘the surest,
easiest, shortest, and the most perfect means’ to becoming a saint’…”

Heart of Jesus, Heart of Mary
How do we allow the Lord to make us a saint? How do we tap into the amazing
graces he’s pouring out during this extraordinary time of mercy? We go to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus. Within this Heart we find the fire of Divine Mercy. Within
this Heart we find extraordinary graces for our time. But how do we get there?
First, we go to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Her special role is to lead us to the
Heart of Jesus, and she does this in the best way possible. And that’s why she is
the quickest, easiest, surest way to the fire of love that burns in the Heart of
Jesus.

¿Cómo podemos permitir que el Señor nos haga santos? ¿Cómo podemos

Small Groups, Big Difference
Jesus didn’t call just one person to set the world on fire with His love. Rather, He
gathered around him a small group—twelve apostles. He formed them, sent them
out into the world, and they made a big difference. That’s what Jesus wants to do
now. He wants to form new apostles for the New Evangelization, and he wants to
begin with us--our family and our friends. He wants to set the world ablaze, using
us to help do it. Remember Luke 12:49:
“I have come to set fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already burning!”
By being here tonight and by participating in the 33 Days to prepare for Marian
Consecration is our way to help Jesus set the world ablaze through us.

So what IS Marian Consecration?
The goal of Marian consecration is Jesus Christ. And through Him, with Him, and
in Him, in unity with the Holy Spirit, God the Father. The goal of Marian
consecration is God, the Holy Trinity. It is NOT Mary. Mary is the one whom we go
to. It is THROUGH Mary to God, through Mary to Jesus. But Mary is NOT the 4th
person of the Trinity. She is not God. She is a creature, but she with Marian
consecration she has a special role to play in our lives—to lead us to Jesus.
Marian Consecration has also been called Total Consecration to Jesus Through
Mary or Marian Entrustment, but regardless of what we call this process, it is
important to remember that the GOAL is God. Mary is a MEANS. For when we
entrust ourselves to Mary, we come closer to God, we come closer to Jesus, we
come closer to the Holy Spirit.
In summary, the point of Marian Consecration is to allow Mary to work in my life
more fully so I can be a better instrument of her Son.

Questions for Introduction and Week 1 with St Louis de Montfort
Introduction--List your two most important reasons for making this retreat
Day 1--The real question is this: “Do we have a fire in our hearts as we begin this retreat?” Reconsider
your motive to begin this retreat and contemplate total consecration to Jesus from Mary. Have you
asked Mary to start a divine fire in your heart for Jesus? What obstacles might she find there that would
interfere with beginning that burning desire to love Jesus? How will you overcome them?
Day 2--Part of Marian consecration involves entrusting ourselves totally to Mary so she can bring us to
Jesus. As she does so in union with her spouse, the Holy Spirit, in the best way possible. For her to bring
us to Jesus, though, we need to let go of always trying to do everything ourselves and from thinking that
everything depends on us. So, what is the first thing that I need to become detached from? Will it be
difficult to become detached from it? Will it take time?
Day 3--Mary’s humility humbles Satan even more than the divine power. Are you ready to strive to
imitate Mary’s humility? What’s the difference between humility and humiliation? When we don’t seek
the former, we sometimes encounter the latter. With which of your family and friends do you find it
easiest to be humble?
Day 4--One of the reasons we give ourselves to Mary is in imitation of Jesus, who gave Himself to her!
When we consecrate ourselves to Jesus through Mary, when we give everything to her, we deepen our
relationship with her, a relationship of child to mother. In order to make us safe, secure, forgiven,
blessed, and graced by Jesus, her Son, what might she decide for us? Are you anxious about letting her
make decisions in certain areas of your life? How might you pray (talk to her) about those decisions?
Day 5--One of the benefits of giving everything to Mary is that she augments our gifts and makes them
more perfect. (Recall St Louis’ analogy of the peasant and the king in 33 Days to Morning Glory). Which
of your gifts would you especially like to become more perfect before God gets it? What would you ask
of Mary to perfect it?
Day 6--Frequently, we are asked to “give what we can afford” to charities, even from the pulpit. Yet
Christ says to the rich, young man, “If you will be perfect, sell what you have and come follow me.:
(Mark 10:21). How serious are we about spiritual perfection? What spiritual, physical, interior, or
exterior goods do we still fear to let go of? Why?
Day 7--Saint Louis describes making a statue from a mold as being much quicker than actually carving it.
Imagine being poured into the mold of Mary. Think of being enveloped by her love of God, her
happiness in doing God’s will, her prayers before the throne of God, her close relationship to Jesus.
Describe your longing to be part of Mary’s virginal and maternal holiness.

Prayer for Week One — The Angelus
The word “Angelus” comes from the first word of the prayer in Latin. This age-old prayer honors the
mystery of the Incarnation and is traditionally prayed at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. A famous painting by
Jean-Francois Millet entitled “Angelus” recalls for us the deep Marian piety that has permeated the lives
of so many of our Catholic brothers and sisters from the past. It depicts two farmers, a man and a
woman, standing in a field. The man reverently holds his hat and the woman devoutly folds her hands as
they both bow their heads in prayer. It’s the end of the workday, and they’re reminded to pray the
Angelus by the tolling bells from the church tower in the distant background: three tolls for each
invocation and Hail Mary and nine tolls for the prayer at the end.
The Angelus can be traced to the 13th century and has been recommended to the faithful by numerous
Popes. In our own day, Pope Paul VI praised and explained it at length in his 1974 apostolic exhortation
on devotion to Mary, Marialis Cultus. For the next eight days (the Introduction and Week One — St.
Louis de Montfort), we’ll begin our time with the Angelus. It would be wonderful to pray it at noon and
at the end of the workday as well. Do whatever is most convenient for you, and don’t lose the focus on
our prayer priority: reading the daily text from the retreat book and the subsequent prayerful
pondering.
