There are two concerns presented in today’s gospel: getting to heaven and caring for the poor. It may not come as a surprise to you that the indifference of the rich man toward the poor beggar was a litmus test for his worthiness to receive a favorable heavenly reward. For modern day Catholics faith and baptism play an important role in our acceptance into God’s eternal kingdom but at the same time the way we treat each other, and especially the neediest among us is just as important to our eternal salvation. I encourage you to give money to charitable organizations, but our heavenly Father is looking for something beyond simply writing a check. He is looking for people who welcome the poor into their hearts, something the rich man in this parable never did. God is looking for people who will treat the homeless, the needy and the alien with the same dignity and attention they give to the wealthiest and most satisfied among us. Jesus told this parable to show that our faith is not individualist. As children of God, we are all members of the same family, the rich, the poor, the homeless and the stranger. We all belong to each other and our Heavenly Father expects us to treat each other with equal love, compassion and dignity. 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time / 26º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 3 parish news, events, and opportunities Back to Basics If the last time you studied about your Catholic faith was as a teenager, then it is time to update your knowledge.
