Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/
Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
In the gospel of Luke (LK 16:19-31) Jesus conveys a parable about a rich man
and a poor beggar named Lazarus. There are two concerns presented in today’s
gospel: getting to heaven and caring for the poor. It may not come as a surprise
to you that the indifference of the rich man toward the poor beggar was a litmus
test for his worthiness to receive a favorable heavenly reward.
For modern day Catholics faith and baptism play an important role in our acceptance into God’s eternal kingdom but at the same time the way we treat each
other, and especially the neediest among us is just as important to our eternal
salvation.
I encourage you to give money to charitable organizations, but our heavenly Father is looking for something
beyond simply writing a check. He is looking for people who welcome the poor into their hearts, something
the rich man in this parable never did. God is looking for people who will treat the homeless, the needy and the
alien with the same dignity and attention they give to the wealthiest and most satisfied among us.
Jesus told this parable to show that our faith is not individualist. As children of God, we are all members of the
same family, the rich, the poor, the homeless and the stranger. We all belong to each other and our Heavenly
Father expects us to treat each other with equal love, compassion and dignity.

Attention Prospective Altar Servers
Our Lady of Fatima invites all youth, 4th grade through high school,
who have received First Holy Communion, to become an altar
server. This is a great way to grow in our service of God and our
neighbor, to meet other servers in the parish and to grow in the
knowledge and practice of the Catholic faith. We will have a training
on October 5th, 2013 following the 8am Mass (so about 8:30am). It
will last about an hour. For servers at the parish school, we will have
training during school hours on October 10th, 2013. Whether new
or not, all altar servers are encouraged to attend. Please visit the parish website at www.olfchurch.net/WORSHIP.html or the office to fill
out the registration form.
