City of St. Cloud officials monitor freeze warnings, provide safety tips

St. Cloud, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2014) – City of St. Cloud officials are keeping a close eye on the freeze
warnings in effect late Jan. 6 into Jan. 7 for portions of east Central Florida, including the city of St.
Cloud.
“We are closely monitoring all the weather updates from the National Weather Service office in
Melbourne,” said the City’s Division of Emergency Management Manager Bill Johnston. “We will see
freezing temperatures here in St. Cloud, and it is important for our residents to stay inside tonight, if at
all possible. If you have to go out, make sure you wear layers of warm, dry clothes; gloves and hats.
Yes, it will be that cold! In addition, we ask our residents to be aware of the elderly and disabled living
alone. If you can, offer your assistance to ensure everyone is as safe as possible.”
Johnston also said First United Methodist Church (1000 Ohio Ave.) will offer shelter to those in
need Jan. 6 from 6 p.m. to Jan. 7, 7 a.m. People needing shelter must be in the building Jan. 6 by 9 p.m.
Dinner and breakfast will be served.
St. Cloud Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Richard Tonks also reminds residents of the dangers that come
along with cold temperatures. These include people using ovens as heating devices and using space
heaters improperly.
“It is dangerous to use an oven as a heating device, but unfortunately some people do this when it
gets as cold as it will tonight.” Tonks said. “This is highly discouraged. It is safer to use layers clothes
and quilts. If you use a space heater, please make sure you use it properly. All space heaters are a fire
risk if used improperly.”
Other safety tips to follow to reduce the possibility of a fire:
 Make sure all heating equipment is clean and in proper working order

Read the owner’s manual before using any heating equipment
Keep a 3-foot clearance of any combustible materials around heaters
Keep children away from all heat sources and matches/lighters
Have an escape plan established for the family to get out of the house in the event
of a fire
Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes
Have a working smoke alarm and a working carbon monoxide detector in the
house, especially if gas appliances are used in the house
Open, outdoor fires are never allowed within city limits
To reduce health risks:
 Limit the time spent outdoors
 Dress appropriately for this type of cold weather
 Bring pets indoors
 Stay hydrated
 Check on the elderly and incapacitated family, friends, and neighbors
City officials will continue to monitor this weather system and will post updated information on the

Johnston también dijo que First United Methodist Church (1000 Ohio Ave.) ofrecerá refugio a los
necesitados del 6 de enero (6 p.m.) hasta el 7 de enero (7 a.m.). Las personas que necesitan refugio
deben estar en el edificio el 6 de enero a las 9 p.m. Se servirá cena y desayuno.
El Fire Marshal del St. Cloud Fire Rescue advierte de los peligros que vienen con temperaturas

Otros consejos para reducir la posibilidad de incendios:






Instrumentos de calefacción deben estar limpios y trabajando correctamente
Lea los manuales para operadores de todo equipo de calefacción
Mantenga tres pies de distancia entre materiales combustibles y calentadores
Mantenga a los niños lejos de toda fuente de calefacción
Tenga un plan de escape para la familia en caso de incendio
No use su horno o estufa para calentar su casa

Tenga una alarma de humo y un detector de monóxido de carbono que trabajen correctamente en
