St. Cloud’s fire chief competes, succeeds in firefighter combat challenge

St. Cloud, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2014) – St. Cloud Fire Chief Bill Sturgeon participated in The Liftmaster
Daytona 500 Firefighter Combat Challenge – Over 50 Category Feb. 22-23 at the Daytona International
Speedway. The event took place in Daytona Beach during the Daytona 500 prerace show. Sturgeon came in
second in the challenge by completing the course in a time of 6 minutes and 19.25 seconds.
As part of the challenge, Sturgeon had to simulate the physical demands of real-life firefighting by
performing a linked series of five tasks – climbing a five-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses,
and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. “victim” as he raced against the others in the Over 50 Category and against
the clock.
“Chief Sturgeon is a very humble person and he didn’t even talk about this great achievement,” said
City Manager Tom Hurt. “Nevertheless, we couldn’t be prouder of him; this was a very difficult and
challenging competition and we are happy for his success and for having him as our fire chief.”
The firefighter combat challenge is a part of the Scott Safety Firefighter Combat Challenge®, which
encourages firefighter fitness and demonstrates the profession’s rigors to the general public. More than
450,000 people attend Speed Week in Daytona Beach annually and those fans enjoy a prerace show on both
Saturday and Sunday. The firefighter combat challenge was held during the prerace show to increase the
public’s awareness of the skills, dedication, and prowess of first responders.
“That’s what this is about – creating awareness and encouraging all firefighters to stay in shape,”
Sturgeon said. “Our line of work, although fulfilling, is a dangerous and challenging line of work. We need
to ensure that we are all ready to protect our community from disaster situations, and we can’t do that if we
are out of shape. Health and fitness are an essential part of being an effective firefighter. I was honored to
represent our city and our firefighters in this event.”
