City of St. Cloud’s curbside single-stream recycling program entering its third year

St. Cloud, Fla. (April 25, 2014) – The City of St. Cloud Public Services’ curbside single-stream
recycling program is now entering its third year.
“Participation has been great since we incorporated this program in October 2011,” said Public
Services Administrator Veronica Miller. “Our customers have been very good at paying attention to the
recyclables list, but we can always improve on that. The quality of our recyclable stream heavily
depends on all of our customers. The benefits of recycling are truly seen when the materials are rinsed
and sorted correctly at home, school, and office. ‘Sorted’ refers to customers recycling only the items
that we can accept so that we can provide a quality product to the remanufacturing companies that make
new products from recycled material.”
Instead of separating recyclables into two “streams” of mixed paper and commingled containers,
customers may conveniently place materials together in one bin. Plastic bottles are recyclable; however,
customers are asked to dispose of all plastic bags, Styrofoam/plastic foam, and shredded paper in the
garbage. Customers are also asked to remove newspapers from their plastic sleeves before placing the
newspapers in the blue carts. All recyclable material should have the lids removed, be rinsed, and placed
loosely in the blue recycling carts – not in bags, particularly plastic grocery bags, plastic garbage bags,
and plastic sleeve bags. Placing recyclable items in bags impedes sorting at the recycling center.
Each blue recycling cart’s lid includes information on all recyclables. For a complete listing of

Programa de reciclaje residencial del municipio de St. Cloud comenzando su
cuarto año

Públicos de la Ciudad de St. Cloud ahora está comenzando su cuarto año.
“Participación ha sido magnífica desde que comenzamos el programa en octubre del 2011”, dijo la
Administradora de Servicios Públicos, Veronica Miller. “Nuestros clientes han sido muy vigentes al prestar
atención a la lista de los materiales reciclables, pero siempre podemos mejorar. La calidad de nuestro flujo
reciclable depende en gran mayoría de todos nuestros clientes. Los beneficios del reciclaje se ven realmente
cuando los materiales se enjuagan y se clasifican correctamente en el hogar, la escuela, y la oficina.
‘Clasificar’ se refiere a que los clientes de reciclaje deben solamente reciclar los elementos que podemos
aceptar para poder ofrecer un producto de calidad a las empresas de remanufactura que hacen nuevos
productos con el material reciclado”.
En vez de separar los materiales reciclables en dos “flujos” de papel mixto y contenedores mezclados,
los clientes pueden convenientemente colocar los materiales en un solo contenedor. Las botellas plásticas son
reciclables; sin embargo, se les pide a los clientes a echar a la basura sus bolsas plásticas, espuma de
poliestireno/porexpán, y papel triturado. También se les pide a los clientes a eliminar las bolsas de periódicos
antes de colocar los periódicos en los contenedores azules. Todos los artículos reciclables deben tener sus
tapas eliminadas, deben enjuagarse, y se deben colocar sueltos en los contenedores azules de reciclaje – no
en bolsas, particularmente bolsas de supermercado plásticas, bolsas de basura plásticas, ni bolsas plásticas
largas (como las de periódicos). Al colocar artículos reciclables en bolsas plásticas impide clasificación
eficaz en el centro de reciclaje.
