A little man called Francis went to Pope Honorius III, and asked for a special dispensation to help people in their search for salvation. This is the origin of the Portiuncula Indulgence, also called the “Pardon of Assisi.” Pope Francis will visit The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the “Pardon of Assisi,” the plenary indulgence. On August 2 we will celebrate The Feast of Our Lady of the Angels of Portiuncula. The following is an excerpt from “The Major Life of St. Francis by St. Bonaventure:” “The Portiuncula was an old church dedicated to the Virgin Mother of God which was abandoned. Francis had great devotion to the Queen of the world and when he saw that the church was deserted, he began to live there constantly in order to repair it. He heard that the Angels often visited it, so that it was called Saint Mary of the Angels, and he decided to stay there permanently out of reverence for the angels and love for the Mother of Christ. He loved this spot more than any other in the world. It was here he began his religious life in a very small way; it is here he came to a happy end. When he was dying, he commended this spot above all others to the friars, because it was most dear to the Blessed Virgin. This was the place where Saint Francis founded his Order by divine inspiration and it was divine providence which led him to repair three churches before he founded the Order and began to preach the Gospel. This meant that he progressed from material things to more spiritual achievements, from lesser to greater, in due order, and it gave a prophetic indication of what he would accomplish later. As he was living there by the church of Our Lady, Francis prayed to her who had conceived the Word, full of grace and truth, begging her insistently and with tears to become his advocate. Then he was granted the true spirit of the Gospel by the intercession of the Mother of mercy and he brought it to fruition. He embraced the Mother of Our Lord Jesus with indescribable love because, as he said, it was she who made the Lord of majesty our brother, and through her we found mercy. After Christ, he put all his trust in her and took her as his patroness for himself and his friars." On this day we can receive the Portiuncula Indulgence. The Portiuncula Indulgence is the first plenary indulgence that was ever granted in the Church. The person who gains the Portiuncula Indulgence is freed from all temporal punishments due to sin and becomes as pure as after holy baptism. This can be offered for oneself or for someone deceased. A plenary indulgence is available to anyone who will: 1. Receive sacramental confession (8 days before or after) 2. Receive the Holy Eucharist at Holy Mass on August 2nd 3. Enter church with a contrite heart, pray the Our Father, Apostles Creed, and a prayer of his/her own choosing for the intentions of the Pope. To help us celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels, our Secular Franciscan Fraternity will have Mass celebrated on August 2 at 5:00 PM in our Church. We welcome and encourage all to attend this Mass and take the opportunity to receive the Portiuncula Indulgence. Living Rosary: August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since it falls on a Monday this year, it is not a holy day of obligation. To help us celebrate the Assumption, the Columbiettes will be praying the Living Rosary at 7:00 PM in church. Those participating in the living Rosary will stand in the church in the form of a rosary. As each recites the Our Father, Hail Mary or Glory Be a candle will be lit. We encourage all to attend and participate in the Living Rosary. We will need individuals to say one of the prayers. As you enter church that night, one of the Columbiettes will instruct you which prayer to say and where to stand. 8 Join us to Celebrate Sister Mary Joan on her 60th Jubilee Next Sunday, August 7th at the 12:00 noon Mass Reception Immediately Following In the Parish Center Sponsored by the Special Events Committee At St. Patrick Catholic Church 13591 Prosperity Farms Road Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 To register Email: [email protected] A Free Event! 8:00AM - 8:00PM How we can grow in Faith Talks ~ Praise and Worship Lectio Divina ~ Media Resources Mass, Confession & Adoration A Light Breakfast Catered Lunch BBQ Dinner at the Beach 7 We Need your Recipes!
