Existe una tendencia a la reducción de niveles de iluminancia ajustándolos a las necesidades
reales (se imponen decididamente las lámparas de más baja potencia 20W, 35W, 70W).
Esto es posible orientando el diseño hacia la percepción (luminancia). El control adecuado
de contrastes (la luz donde es necesaria) y un buen tratamiento de los planos verticales
(sensación de luminosidad elevada) pueden ser la base de un buen diseño de iluminación.
There is a growing trend to reduce lighting levels adjusting them to real needs (with a definite
increase in lower power lamps of 20W, 35W, 70W). This is achieved by directing design towards
perception (luminance). The adequate management of contrasts (light where it is really needed)

Los escaparates se convierten en el primer contacto con el cliente.
Es la zona más teatral de la tienda y uno de los mayores puntos de
reclamo y atracción de los clientes. Aquí la iluminación desempeña un

La ubicación es uno de los factores de éxito de las tiendas. En función

las ciudades… se puede actuar sobre las fachadas, iluminándolas para

to the location, the characteristics of the building, local by-laws... you
can utilise the façade in different ways, lighting it in such a way to attract
the attention of passers-by and highlight the brand in the street where it

from washing the walls with light and creating theatrical effects, to

espacios más diferenciados. En este proceso deben plantearse tanto
requisitos psicológicos - ¿cómo dirigir al comprador? ¿cómo despertar la
curiosidad y captar la atención del cliente? - hasta criterios relacionados
con las cualidades de la luz - reproducción cromática, temperatura de color,
modelado de sombras e iluminación del producto /contraste. En iluminación
comercial el efecto prevalece por encima de los niveles de iluminación.
In retail lighting, light can be used in a variety of ways, producing very different

El diseño de la iluminación en un hospital debe considerar dos aspectos clave: el bienestar de las personas y la funcionalidad de la luz. La iluminación debe apoyar las
distintas tareas que se llevan a cabo en un hospital y tratar cada zona en función de las necesidades, considerando que algunas zonas deben cumplir estándares muy
rigurosos en cuanto a la protección de las luminarias, cumplir criterios de uniformidad lumínica, asegurar buenos niveles de iluminación, facilitar la circulación entre
las diferentes áreas… Además, la luz tiene efectos psicológicos sobre las personas, por lo tanto, la iluminación debe crear una sensación de bienestar y confort a los
pacientes, visitantes y personal del centro, diseñando una iluminación flexible, por zonas y adecuada según el momento del día.

Recientemente en Troll nos visitó una de las personas que más
ha contribuido al desarrollo de la iluminación. Esta celebridad es
el americano George Craford, inventor del LED amarillo y que ha
contribuido a la mejora tecnológica del LED rojo y amarillo. Entre
numerosos premios y condecoraciones, en 2002 recibió la Medalla
Nacional de Tecnología de la mano del Presidente de los Estados
Unidos, como reconocimiento a su contribución a la tecnología
LED. Este descubrimiento no sólo ha contribuido enormemente al
desarrollo de la tecnología LED sino al mundo de la iluminación en
general. Hablamos con él con el objetivo de conocer su opinión sobre
varios temas.
Recently at Troll we were visited by one of the foremost contributors
to the development of lighting. This celebrity is the American, George
Craford, inventor of the yellow LED and technologies for improved
red and yellow LEDs. Amongst numerous prizes and decorations, in
2002 he received the National Medal of Technology from the hand of
the President of the United States, in recognition of his contribution to
LED technology. This discovery has not only contributed enormously to
the development of LED technology, but also to the world of lighting
in general. We spoke with him in order to get his opinion and insight
about various issues.
La tecnología LED se ha popularizado. Todo el mundo habla de los LEDs y lo
asocia a algo nuevo, eficiente y moderno. ¿Cuál es su percepción, piensa que

LED technology has become very popular. Everybody speaks about LEDs and
associates them with something new, efficient and trendy. We would like to
know your viewpoint - do you think LEDs are a fashion or more a reality?
There’s no question that LEDs will completely dominate lighting. The only
question is time. We believe that by 2020, 80% of lighting applications will be
LED based.
¿Cree que los LEDs podran llegar a sustituir totalmente las
fuentes de luz tradicionales? ¿Podremos llegar a conseguir
los niveles que ofrecen fuentes de luz más técnicas como
los halogenuros metálicos?
Creo que los LEDs remplazarán las fuentes de luz tradicionales,
algunas antes que otras. En algunas aplicaciones podemos
utilizar múltiples tecnologías, pero los LEDs serán la principal
fuente de luz.
En el horizonte temporal, ¿cuando cree que la tecnología
LED “sustituirá” las fuentes de luz tradicionales?
Habrá un importante cambio durante la próxima década y la
tecnología LED será común en pocos años.
¿Cuál es el techo de la eficiencia con la tecnología actual?
¿Llegarán los LEDs a un CRI de 100?
Definitivamente los LEDS llegaran a alcanzar los 150lm/W y pueden llegar a
superar los 200 lm/W. Es improbable que un LED tenga un CRI de 100 pero
los LEDS ya tienen un CRI de 90, adecuado prácticamente para cualquier
aplicación.
¿Cómo serán los LEDs de nueva generación?
La tecnología actual seguirá evolucionando. No veo probable un remplazo de la
tecnología actualmente.
En cuanto a los costes, ¿cómo evolucionará el ratio lumen/€? ¿Cómo
evolucionará la fiabilidad vs al precio?
Actualmente el ratio está alrededor de los 100 lúmenes por dóllar y creemos que
se multiplicará por diez en los próximos años. Hoy, los LED LUXEON obtienen un
buen mantenimiento del flujo luminoso y esperamos que con la evolución de la
tecnología, los LEDs LUXEON continuarán incrementando su vida útil.
¿Cómo afectará la evolución del LED en nuestras vidas cuotidianas?
¿Perderemos calidad de vida por la pérdida de calidad de luz?
Los LEDs dominarán y se usarán de mil maneras, en las que todavía no hemos
pensado. La calidad de vida mejorará, porque los LEDs ofrecerán la posibilidad
de cambiar el color, de ser dimables y ofrecerán una muy buena calidad de la
luz.
¿Qué nos puede explicar de los O-LEDs? ¿Cómo están evolucionando?
Los O-LEDs son un delgado film orgánico adecuado para algunas exposiciones
y otras aplicaciones de iluminación de grandes áreas. Sin embargo, lo veo más
como una tecnología de nicho porque el coste será probablemente muy superior
a los LEDs hasta que aumente la demanda de OLED en grandes áreas.
Y nuestra última pregunta… ¿cómo ve el sector de la iluminación en 20
años?
Completamente dominado por los LEDs. Hoy, cuando pensamos en iluminación,
pensamos en lámparas y luminarias. En 20 años, pensaremos en instalar
luminarias LED que son más delgadas y ligeras que las que disponemos
actualmente.
Do you think LEDs will replace the traditional light sources
totally? Do you think we will be able to obtain the levels that
offer others more technical light sources like metal halide?
I think LEDs will replace all conventional sources, some sooner
than others. Some applications may be served by multiple
technologies but LEDs will be the primary light source.
In the time horizon, when do you think that LED technology
will substitute traditional light sources?
There will be a very large shift over the next decade and LED
technology will be commonplace in the next few years.
What is the maximum level of efficiency that can be achieved
with current technology? Will LEDs arrive at a CRI of 100?
LEDs will definitely achieve 150 lm/w and may surpass 200 lm/
watt. It’s unlikely that an LED will have a CRI of 100 but LEDs already have CRI
in the 90s and are suitable for virtually every application.
What will be the new generation of LEDs be like?
The existing technology will continue to evolve. I do not see a likely replacement
technology at this time.
Regarding costs, how do you think the lumen/ € ratio will develop? And how
will reliability versus price develop?
Today, the ratio is about 100 lumens per dollar and we see that increasing tenfold in the coming years. Today’s LUXEON LEDs deliver tremendous lumen
maintenance benefits and we expect that as the technology develops, and drive
currents and density increase, LUXEON LEDs will continue to deliver the long
usable lifetime that they’re known for.
How do you think the development of LEDs will affect in our daily lives? Are
we going to lose quality of life due to loss of light quality?
LEDs will be pervasive and used in many ways that we have not yet thought of.
Quality of life will go up because LEDs will be colour tuneable, dimmable, and
will have a high quality of light.
Could you explain something about O-LEDs? How are they evolving?
OLED is an organic thin film technology suitable for some display and large area
lighting applications. However, I see it as a niche lighting technology because the
cost will likely be much higher than for LEDs since large areas of OLED material
are required.
And our last question… how do you envisage the lighting sector in 20 years?
Completely dominated by LEDs. Today when we think of lighting, we think about
bulbs and fixtures. In 20 years, we’ll be thinking about fit for life LED luminaires
that are thinner and sleeker than what’s available today.

Roca Barcelona Gallery,
sensaciones de agua con luz
El prestigioso estudio de arquitectura de Carlos Ferrater OAB
ha diseñado el nuevo edificio emblema de Roca, marca global
líder mundial en espacios de baño. Roca Barcelona Gallery es
una propuesta de experiencia de marca donde se llevan a cabo
actividades sociales, culturales y expositivas (combina un centro
cultural y de exposición de productos de baño de la marca).
Este nuevo edificio supone un reto arquitectónico: interpretar y
proyectar los valores de la marca a través de la arquitectura.
La fachada de Roca Barcelona Gallery se ha diseñado con el equipo de lighting designers de
Artec3 (Maurici Gines) con una visión totalmente innovadora. Con la idea de evocar emociones
positivas asociadas al agua y transmitir sensaciones de fluidez y dinamismo en el edificio, en la
fachada se ha trabajado con vidrio para crear un efecto transparente durante el día y durante la
noche, reproducir un efecto de agua cayendo a través de la superficie del edificio. Efecto que se
consigue con la luz y que le otorga un carácter propio.
El desafío para Led&Co fue reproducir este efecto de movimiento de agua con luz en toda la
superficie de vidrio del exterior. Para crear este efecto de agua en movimiento, la instalación
precisaba de una gran cantidad de puntos de luz controlables individualmente.
La solución fue usar LEDs de alta potencia debido a su pequeño tamaño, eficacia, durabilidad y
posibilidad de control, con un sistema de control DMX. Se diseñaron luminarias especiales de
pequeño tamaño que integraban 36 LEDs/m con el que se maximizaba los niveles de luz y se
conseguía el efecto deseado que se planteaba en el proyecto.
Según Jordi Rocasalbas, responsable de I+D en LED&Co, “el cristal en la fachada tiene un matiz
verde y cuando lo iluminamos con la luz blanca de los LEDs de arriba a abajo, produce un efecto
azul, el mismo efecto de color que el agua”.
La fachada de Roca Barcelona Gallery consigue mediante sensaciones lumínicas, evocar los
distintos estados y comportamientos del agua y convertir este ambicioso proyecto arquitectónico
en una realidad en el corazón de Barcelona.

sensation of water using light
The prestigious architecture studio of Carlos Ferrater OAB has
designed the new flagship building of Roca, a world leading
global brand in the bathroom sector. Roca Gallery Barcelona
is a brand experiential concept where social, cultural and
expositive activities take place (combines a cultural centre
and showroom, with the brand’s products on display). This new
building raises an architectural challenge: how to interpret
and project the values of the brand through architecture.
The façade of the Roca Barcelona Gallery has been designed with the help of a team of lighting
designers from Artec3 (Maurici Gines), with a completely innovative vision. With the aim of
provoking positive emotions associated with water and transmit a sense of fluidity and dynamism
in the building, they have worked with a glass façade to create a transparent effect both day and
night, to reproduce the effect of water pouring down the surface of the building. An effect that they
manage by using light to give the building its own character and personality.
The challenge for LED&Co was how to use light to reproduce this dynamic effect of gushing water
covering the whole of the outside of the building. To create this illusion of running water, the
installation required a large number of independently controllable lighting points.
The solution was to use high performance LEDs because of their small size, efficiency, durability
and the possibility of control, with a DMX system. They used specifically designed small luminaires
that integrated 36 LEDs/m that maximised the light levels to achieve the effect that the project
was aiming for.
According to Jordi Rocasalbas, Research and Development Manager at LED & Co, ‘the glass in the
façade has a green tint to it, and when we shine the white light from the LEDs into the glass from
above and below, it produces a blue effect the same colour as a body of water’.
The façade of the Roca Barcelona Gallery manages to use the sensation of light to imitate the
different states and behaviour of water and convert this ambitious architectural project in the
heart of Barcelona into a reality.

Wind pertenece a una nueva generación de luminarias de alumbrado público, diseñada a partir de las demandas crecientes
de la sociedad con conciencia global en eficiencia y ahorro energético. Con un óptimo conjunto óptico, un sistema dinámico y
versátil y un diseño integrador, Wind es una perfecta opción para adecuarse a las inquietudes de las “nuevas ciudades” de

La luminaria está construida en fundición de aluminio con una ligera curvatura del radio de 3.000 mm. que le da un aspecto de
ligereza. Incorpora 50 LEDs de alto rendimiento con una temperatura de color de 4.000ºK, repartidos en 10 módulos de 5 LEDs
cada uno con su sistema óptico, diseñado a partir de reflectores asimétricos. Además tiene un refractor de metacrilato prismático

equipos pueden ser regulables, con un sistema de doble nivel, preparado para instalaciones con regulación de flujo en cabecera o

Wind belongs to a whole new generation of luminaires for urban lighting, designed to suit growing social demands for an
efficient energy-saving product that is kinder to the environment. With its optimum optic fitting, a dynamic and flexible system
and integrated design, Wind is an ideal choice to suit the concerns of our “new cities”, to care for our planet.
The luminaire is made from die-cast aluminium with a light curve on its radius of 3,000 mm. giving it a lightweight, modern feel.
It includes 50 high performance LEDs with a colour temperature of 4,000ºK, distributed in 10 modules of 5 LEDs each with its
own optic mounting, and designed around asymmetric reflectors. It also has a prismatic methacrylate refractor in the lower part

Wind offers several ways to install it, as a single luminaire or
groups of two or three. It is prepared on columns of 4, 6 or 8

The global efficiency of Wind is over 80%. In other words if you
were to install 1,000 luminaires, you would be saving more than

The Lightpod consists of a box containing the reflectors. Both the box
and the reflectors come in several shapes and finishes to fit in with
varying requirements and aesthetic tastes. There are two box models:
vertical and horizontal, where different reflectors are connected: naked,
cylindrical and spherical. And all the reflectors come in two sizes,
depending on the lamp (HIT, HIT-TC, QR-111 or HST). The Lightpod
spotlights are available with various aperture angles - spot, medium or
extensive - suitable for applications in shopping areas.

Plug&Light es un nuevo sistema diseñado para ofrecer una
infinidad de posibilidades tanto en el diseño de espacios
como en diseño de la iluminación. El sistema es modular y se
compone de unas estructuras luminosas de libre configuración,
especialmente adecuadas para aplicaciones de retail lighting,
hoteles, restaurantes, oficinas, exposiciones...
A partir de una amplia oferta de módulos y de perfiles, es posible crear
una infinidad de combinaciones y crear distintos efectos, tanto de
iluminación general como de iluminación de acento.
El perfil portante está fabricado en extrusión de aluminio y está
disponible en varias medidas (1, 1.5, 2 y 3 metros), en acabados blanco,
negro y gris. Los módulos luminosos están fabricados en chapa de acero
y se completan con tapa embellecedora. Están disponibles en versiones
tipo cardan de una, dos y tres lámparas HIT, QR-111, HI-PAR111 y
módulos de fluorescencia T5 con óptica de doble parábola brillo, ópticas
asimétricas y difusores opal, versiones de emergencia y regulación y
módulos de sonido. Los módulos luminosos están disponibles en

Plug&Light is the new system designed to offer an infinite
number of design possibilities for spaces as well as lighting.
The system is modular; it is composed of several free-standing
luminous structures, specifically appropriate for applications
in retail lighting, hotels, restaurants, offices, exhibitions...
The wide array of modules and profiles makes it possible to create an
infinite number of combinations as well as different lighting effects,
ranging from general lighting to specific lighting. The profile is made
from extruded aluminium and is available in different sizes (1, 1.5, 2
and 3 metres), in black, white or grey. The luminous modules are made
from steel and are rounded off with a cover. There are cardan system
versions with one, two or three lamps, HIT, QR-111, HI-PAR111 and
T5 fluorescent modules with a double parabolic louver, asymmetric
reflector, opal diffuser, with emergency and dimmable versions as well
as sound module versions. The luminous modules are available in the
following finishes; grey, glossy white and glossy black, so that they can
fit in current interior design trends.
The range is complemented by a variety of accessories that allow the
carrying out of continuous lines, suspended, fixed or surface-mounted
installation and various designs using covers and 90º angles.

in Barcelona’s T1
en la T1 de Barcelona
Barcelona inauguró en junio de 2009 la nueva terminal T1 del Aeropuerto
de Barcelona. Con la puesta en marcha de la T1, Barcelona se consolida
como el aeropuerto de referencia del Mediterráneo y del sur de Europa.
Diseñada por el arquitecto Ricardo Bofill, la nueva terminal cuenta con
una superficie de 550.000 m2 y permitirá adaptarse a los sucesivos
incrementos de tráfico de pasajeros y mercancías. La nueva terminal,
aumentará la capacidad del aeropuerto hasta los 55 millones de
pasajeros anuales y podrá alcanzar hasta 90 vuelos por hora.
In June 2009, Barcelona unveiled the new Terminal T1 at Barcelona
Airport. With the T1 up and running, Barcelona strengthened its position
as a central airport for the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.
Designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill, the new terminal occupies
an area of 555,000 square meters and is prepared to cater for future
rises in passenger and freight traffic. The new terminal will increase the
capacity of the airport to 55 million passengers per year and could mean
as many as 90 flights per hour.
La propuesta arquitectónica de la nueva T1 destaca por su complejidad
logística y técnica, pues se prevé una circulación de 100.000 pasajeros
diarios y cuenta con unos 15.000 empleados. El resultado es un
complejo que se estructura alrededor de tres grandes elementos: un
edificio procesador que aloja la facturación, la recogida de equipajes y
la zona comercial del lado aire, dos diques laterales y uno longitudinal
dedicados al embarque de pasajeros y un vestíbulo intermodal donde
confluirán los distintos sistemas de transporte. La terminal cuenta
también con un centro de negocios, salas VIP, un centro de Spa, una
gran área comercial, oficina bancaria, alquiler de vehículos, capilla,
oratorio, aparcamiento y otros servicios complementarios.
The proposed architecture of the new T1 stands out for its logistic
and technical complexity, for anticipating the circulation of 100,000
passengers per day and approximately 15,000 staff. The result is a
complex that is structured around three large elements: a processing
building that houses the check-in desks, baggage collection and the
open air shopping area, two extensions at the side and one along the
width whose purposes are passenger boarding, and a depot where the
different transport systems come together. The terminal also takes into
account the business centre, VIP areas, a Spa, a large commercial area,
banking office, car hire, chapel, car park and other complementary
services.
La iluminación es protagonista en el planteamiento del proyecto,
buscando la luz mediterránea en los interiores, creando espacios
luminosos y confortables. Troll ha participado en el diseño de la
iluminación, consiguiendo los niveles adecuados y creando ambientes
suficientemente cálidos a partir de una propuesta de luminarias que
cumplen con las necesidades arquitectónicas. Es por ello que en algunas
zonas se ha precisado del diseño de productos especiales, a medida.
Principalmente se han instalado luminarias con lámparas de inducción,
especialmente adecuadas en grandes espacios que ofrecen unos
buenos niveles de iluminación y que reducen drásticamente los costes
de mantenimiento y el inconveniente de la sustitución de la lámpara
(vida aproximada 60.000 horas). También se han instalado luminarias
fluorescentes regulables que permiten adecuar la intensidad de luz
en función del momento del día y por lo tanto que permiten ahorro
energético.
The lighting is a major factor in setting out the project, searching for
Mediterranean light indoors, creating bright and comfortable spaces.
Troll has participated in the lighting design, managing the appropriate
levels of lighting and creating surroundings that are sufficiently warm
and inviting by using a proposal of luminaires that fulfil the architectural
requirements. For this reason, some zones needed special custommade products to be designed. Mainly luminaires with induction lamps
have been installed. These lamps are especially suitable in large spaces
that offer good levels of lighting and drastically reduce maintenance
costs and the inconvenience of replacing the lamp (approximate lifespan 60,000 hours). Also there have been installed adjustable fluorescent
luminaires that allow adapting the intensity of the light depending on the
time of day and therefore saving energy.
El edificio combina el carácter multicultural e internacional con la
luminosidad y calidez ambiental de la arquitectura mediterránea. La
nueva T1 se integra perfectamente en el entorno y el diseño de interiores
conjuga la funcionalidad y el diseño a través de amplios espacios donde
la iluminación natural es protagonista en todas las zonas destinadas a
los pasajeros.
The building combines the multicultural and international character with
the brightness and warm environment of Mediterranean architecture.
The new T1 fits in perfectly with its surroundings and the interior design
matches functionality and design through wide spaces where natural

las luminarias cilíndricas Disc que nacen de la colaboración con Artec
Design / BOPBAA ARQUTECTURA. Su diseño se caracteriza por ofrecer
una versatilidad lumínica y una imagen de solidez y transparencia
resultado del uso de materiales opacos y traslúcidos. Basado en
conceptos formales donde el color, la opacidad y la transparencia se
conjugan de forma que puede advertirse lo que ocurre en el interior de
la pieza pero de una forma abstracta.
La versatilidad lumínica se debe a que las luminarias pueden emitir
luz directa, indirecta y emisión lateral, permitiendo así diferentes
aplicaciones. Además, Disc ofrece la posibilidad de instalación tanto en
versión adosada como suspendida mediante cable de acero.
Disc se puede personalizar gracias al uso de filtros de color tanto en la
parte inferior como en los laterales. El uso de filtros de color permite que
las luminarias se adecuen a los colores corporativos o predominantes en
