Grace and Peace!
During these last weeks of Pentecost we are reminded of how
fascinated people are with speculation about the end of the
world. We sometimes fixate on those things the Bible tells us
we will never know (such as the date of the end of the world)
instead of focusing on the many things the Bible tells us we can
be sure of (God’s constant love and care of us and God’s desire
that we care for each other and this world in extraordinarily
generous and self-giving ways!). Luther has rightfully been
quoted that if he knew the world would end tomorrow he
would plant a tree. Between Christ the King Sunday and the
first Sunday of Advent the end and the beginning meet and we
are there and God is in the middle of it all.
It is always a sign of fall when we prepare for Abelskiever and
get the support of the community for our Silent Auction fundraising. This year again we especially remembered Lorraine
Kersten and her years of working with and enjoying this yearly
event. It was once more a joy to be accompanied by her family
this year —excellent and experienced abelskiever cooks and
servers! The comments that our abelskiever were especially
outstanding this year are ones that I can personally endorse.
We have many activities coming up in the next few weeks.
Wednesday evenings are an opportunity to take time out of
your busy schedule to reflect and remember. We will be gathering for fellowship at 6 pm for a soup meal and Holden vespers on Dec. 1. The following week we will again share soup at
6 pm and plan to do caroling. Bring your singing voices and
warm clothes. On Dec. 15 we will join with brothers and sisters from neighboring churches to re-enact the journey of Joseph and Mary as they search for lodging in the Posadas drama.
A party will follow with a piñata for the children. The children’s
Christmas program will take place on Sunday, Dec 19, during
the 10:00 worship. Let us be sure to take time this season to
perceive the miracle of love that is a sign of the presence of
God in our lives and God’s intent for our world.

Durante estas últimas semanas de pentecostés nos recuerda
como la gente se fascina en especular sobre el fin del mundo. A
veces nos enfocamos demasiado en las cosas que la Biblia nos
dice que nunca sabremos (como la fecha del fin del mundo) en
vez de enfocarnos en tantas cosas que la Biblia nos cuenta que
son aseguradas (el amor y cuidado constante de Dios por nosotros y el deseo de Dios que nos cuidemos en formas extraordinarias de generosidad y entrega de nosotros mismos a los demás!).
Se cita mucho a Lutero, con razón, cuando dice que si supiera
que el mundo mañana terminaría, plantaría un árbol hoy. Entre
los domingos de Cristo Rey y el primer domingo de Adviento el fin
y el comienza se encuentran y allí estamos y Dios está en medio
de todo.
Es siempre una señal del otoño cuando nos preparamos para el
Abelskiever y recibimos el apoyo de la comunidad para nuestra
subasta silenciosa. Este año otra vez recordamos a Lorraine
Kersten y sus años de trabajar y gozar este evento anual. Fue un
placer ser acompañado por su familia este año otra vez—
¡cocineros y meseros de abelskiever excellentes y con experiencia! Los comentarios fueron que los abelskiever este año se sobresalieron – algo que puedo endorsar personalmente.
Tenemos muchas actividades en las próximas semanas. Los
miércoles en la tarde son una oportunidad para tomar tiempo de
su horario muy ocupado para reflexionar y recordar. Nos reuniremos para hermandad y una comida de sopa con vísperas de
Holden el 1 de diciembre a las 6 pm. La semana siguiente compartiremos sopa otra vez a las 6 pm y saldremos a cantar villancicos. El 15 de diciembre nos uniremos con otras iglesias vecinas
para hacer el drama de la jornada de José y María al buscar hospedaje en las Posadas. Se sigue una fiesta con piñata para los
niños. El programa navideña de los niños tomará lugar el domingo, 19 de diciembre, a las 10 de la mañana. Asegurémonos el
tiempo esta época para percibir el milagro de amor que es señal
de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas y del intento de Dios
para nuestro mundo.

As we prepare to celebrate the Christmas season we want everyone to have an opportunity to
participate in the decoration of the sanctuary.
We will be ordering Christmas Poinsettias. This
beautiful flower is native to Mexico and
Guatemala and known there as the Christmas
Eve Flower. You may give a donation of $7 in
memory or in honor of a special person to help
cover the cost of the flowers.
