El canto del agua
Porqué el desierto es tan seco
Hace muchos, muchos años atrás, cuando la tierra comenzaba recién a
adquirir su forma actual, en la zona atacameña aparecían los paisajes de
volcanes y planicies, con su amplia gama de colores. Llovía y llovía y se iban
formando caudalosos ríos. Los atacameños le cantaban al agua y el agua les
ayudaba en sus labores agrícolas. El correr del agua arrastraba piedras que
formaban, poco a poco, los muros de canales, los que aún hoy en día se
conservan. Tiempo después comenzó una lluvia que duró cuarenta días y
cuarenta noches, y el agua corrió y corrió hasta que se acabó.
Así los atacameños lo perdieron todo: los terrenos, los sembrados, la vida.
Ahora, nadie sabe cantarle al agua para que vuelva a brotar como antes.
Fiesta del agua: Cada primavera, el pueblo atacameño celebra la fiesta de Limpieza de canales,
para preparar los canales de regadío que recibirán las aguas de los deshielos. Durante tres días, la
comunidad entera trabaja por el bien común y termina haciendo ofrendas a la Pachamama – Madre
Tierra- para asegurar un año de fertilidad.

The song of the water
Why the desert is so dry
Many, many years ago when the earth was recently taking shape, in the area
known as Atacama, volcanoes and plains appeared and the earth took on a wide
range of colours. It rained and rained and gushing rivers were formed.
The Atacameñans sang to the water, and the water helped them with their
cultivation. The running water brought stones with it which made the walls of
the canals which can still be seen today.
Some time later came a big rain, it rained for forty days and forty nights and
the water ran and ran until it ran out. And that is how the Atacameñans lost
everything, all their crops, their earth and their life.
Nowadays, nobody knows how to sing to the water so that it comes back, like
it was before.
Fiesta del agua: The water party. Every spring the Atacameñan people celebrate the fiesta of canal
cleaning to prepare the canals which irrigate the area to receive the meltwater from the Andean
Snows. For three solid days, the entire community works for the communal benefit and the festival
and the work finishes with a ceremonial offering to Pachamama, or Mother Earth, to ensure a fertile
year.
