A Letter to Amy is a book about friendship, feelings and writing. A birthday invitation gets lost in the
mail and strong emotions follow. When you read this story with your child and get ready to write to a
friend, you can emphasize the importance of communicating through writing whether it is with a card,
letter or e-mail.

Write letters, invitations or greeting cards to friends and family.

•Various writing materials such as: colorful paper, envelopes, pencils, crayons,
markers, postcards, stickers and greeting cards
What you do
1. Read the book.
2. Talk about the story.
3. Write a letter or invitation to a friend or family member.

How do you communicate with your friends or family? Do you write letters? Why is a letter a good
way to communicate?
For parents
Writing is an important part of reading and communicating. As your child matures, writing will begin
as scribbles, then pictures, then single words and finally complete sentences. It is important that he
learns to put his thoughts down on paper the best way he can. When he first starts to write and put
words together, he will spell a word like it sounds to him, this inventive spelling encourages creativity.
