REFLECTIONS ON THE WAR OF THE PACIFIC

Abstract This article explains Chile's triumph in the War of the
Pacific. A combination of political stability, a highly trained officer
corps, and its access to the sealanes, permitted the Aníbal Pinto
regime to defeat the more numerous armies of Peru and Bolivia.
Although all the belligerents used the most modern military
technology-steel artillery, breech-loading refiles, and the Galling
Gun, none, for a variety of reasons, tried to incorporate the tactical
lessons derived from the U.S. Civil War or the Franco Prussian
conflict.

Resumen. "Reflexiones sobre la Guerra del Pacífico". Este
artículo explica el triunfo de Chile en la Guerra del Pacífico.
Una combinación de estabilidad política, un cuerpo de oficiales
altamente preparado, y el acceso a las rutas de mar permitió al
régimen de Aníbal Pinto derrotar a los mucho más numerosos
ejércitos de Perú y Bolivia. A pesar de que todas las naciones
beligerantes usaron la más moderna tecnología militar-artillería
de acero, rifles de retrocarga y cañones Catling- ninguna de
ellas, por varias razones trató de incorporar las lecciones
tácticas derivadas de la Guerra Civil de los Estados Unidos o la
Guerra Franco- Prusiana.
