Parents,
We hope you had an exciting holiday with friends and family. This spring semester
we’re geared up with another one of our great Avid strategies.
For the fourth six weeks, we will utilize Costa’s Levels of Thinking and Questioning
from Kinder through Fifth. Costa’s Levels of Thinking and Questioning challenges
students to think beyond what’s in the text. Students are expected to analyze,
make applications with the content, and most importantly, students are expected
to make connections with their learning drawing on their own experiences.
They’re making evaluations and judgments about what’s been presented in their
text and the questions teachers are asking them in order for students to stretch
their thinking when it comes to learning. As we prepare and train our students for
success, this strategy is paramount for students as they move through their
academic years. For we know that one day they will be contributing to an ever
changing global society. Having this strategy will allow them to compete,
dialogue, and partner with people all over the world.
This strategy looks different at each grade level. In Kinder through Second, the
strategy is modeled by the teacher, but in third through fifth, students are not
only writing Costa’s Level of Questions, but are able to identify them in their
content areas. So, as you are having discussions with your children at home,
challenge them by asking questions beyond what would require a simple answer,
and we believe you’ll see that their response will be at a greater depth.
Examples of the Costa’s Level of Questions:
Level One: Where did the setting of the story take place?
Level Two: Pretend you were the main character in the story. How would you
have handled the situation differently?
Level Three: Why do you think the main character reacted so harshly towards
the man? Is he justified in responding in such a cruel manner? Explain and give
reasons for your answer

Esperamos que hayan tenido unas agradables vacaciones con sus familiares y amigos.
Este semestre nos estamos preparando con otra de nuestras grandes estrategias de
Avid.
Para las cuartas seis semanas, vamos a utilizar los niveles de Costa de pensamiento y
cuestionamiento desde Kínder hasta quinto. Niveles de Costa de Pensamiento y
Cuestionamiento desafían a los estudiantes a pensar más allá de lo que está en el
texto. Los estudiantes deben analizar, realizar aplicaciones con el contenido y lo más
importante, se espera que los estudiantes puedan hacer conexiones de su aprendizaje y
sus propias experiencias. Además, estarán haciendo evaluaciones y juicios acerca de lo
que se ha presentado en su texto y las preguntas que los maestros les estarán haciendo
para retar su pensamiento cuando se trate de aprendizaje. Mientras preparamos a
nuestros estudiantes para el éxito, esta estrategia es de suma importancia para que los
estudiantes avancen a través de sus cursos académicos. Porque sabemos que un día
ellos estarán contribuyendo a una sociedad global en constante cambio. Tener esta
estrategia les permitirá competir, dialogar, y asociarse con personas de todo el mundo.
Esta estrategia se ve diferente en cada grado. De Kínder a segundo dicha estrategia es
modelada por el maestro, pero de tercero a quinto, los estudiantes no sólo estarán
escribiendo las preguntas de nivel Costa, sino que deberán ser capaces de identificarlas
en sus áreas de contenido. Así que, como usted está teniendo conversaciones con sus
hijos en casa, desafíelos haciéndoles preguntas más allá de lo que requeriría una
respuesta sencilla, y creemos que usted verá que su respuesta será a mayor
profundidad.
Ejemplos de nivel de las preguntas de la Costa:
Nivel Uno: ¿Dónde se llevó a cabo la historia?
Nivel Dos: Imagina que fueras el personaje principal de la historia. ¿Cómo habrías
manejado la situación de manera diferente?
Nivel Tres: ¿Por qué crees que el personaje principal reaccionó con tanta dureza
hacia el hombre? ¿Está justificada la forma de responder de una manera tan cruel?
