The Gawain Poet
Setting: Legendary kingdom of King Arthur, fifth or sixth century A.D.
The Green Knight challenges any man in King Arthur’s court to hit his neck with an
ax. The only rule is that the Green Knight may return the blow in a year and a day.
Sir Gawain accepts the challenge. He cuts off the Green Knight’s head. The Green
Knight picks up his head and rides off.
After a year goes by, Gawain sets off to look for the Green Knight. On the way,
he meets a lord and lady. While the lord is away hunting, the lady offers kisses and
gifts to Gawain. He acts with honor and refuses. Finally, she offers him a sash with
the power to protect him from harm. He takes the sash, and then leaves to meet
the Green Knight and receive his blow.
