Pastor’s Corner
When I woke up on Monday morning and heard the
news that Pope Benedict was resigning the papacy on the
28th of this month I first thought of that 1960 hit of Dean
Martin “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head.” It came as a shock
to me at first but after reading his statement and the reasons
why he is “retiring” from office his actions now seem very
prophetic to me. He writes:
After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty
that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are
no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the
Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be
carried out not only with words and deeds, but no
less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s
world, subject to so many rapid changes and
shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life
of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of
mind and body are necessary, strength which in
the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the
extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity
to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.
For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness
of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor
of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals
on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28
February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome,
the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to
be convoked by those whose competence it is.
A prophet is a person appointed by the Lord to
speak God’s words, he’s not a fortune-teller. The Holy Father is a man of deep humility and great faith. He understands the challenges and hostilities that confront Christians
in this day and age. Pope Benedict understands too that the
troubles to come require a leader of equal sanctity and of
much better health. He is going to resign his ministry only
after much prayers and discernment. In this his actions are
prophetic.
It is my hope that he will continue to teach and
write, even in retirement. I’ve found his teachings and writings clear, concise, and profound. Perhaps during this
Lenten Season you would avail yourselves of the opportunity to read his writings, a list of which can be found here:
http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Ben16/index.htm.
What happens next? Well, 15 days after Pope
Benedict leaves his office the College of Cardinals, at least
those younger than 80, will gather in the Vatican and will
begin the process of electing a new pope. By secret ballot
they will narrow down their choices until a 2/3 majority is
reached and the person elected accepts the vote. So who is
the next pope going to be? I’ll let you know before Easter
when he’s elected!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person
who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven
activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful
and reflective than ever before, reviewing life’s journey in
gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends
for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and
drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the
lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make
plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities.
Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three
“pillars” of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this
season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life.
And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter
and the experience of the victory of Christ over death’s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the
Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end
of life’s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of
heaven.

He encontrado sus enseñanzas
