Which documents do I need to present with my application?
It is a requirement to upload the following documents:
-
CV
Master’s certificate and/or a document certifying enrollment in post graduate program.
Two letters of recommendation
A letter explaining: your research project or research interests, the reasons of your interest
in participating in LASSSI 2017, and a list indicating your preferences for the workshops in
a hierarchical order (1 -5).
¿Cuáles son los documentos que necesito para presentar con mi postulación?
Es requisito subir los siguientes documentos:

CV
Certificado de grado de magíster y/o un documento certificando la inscripción en algún
programa de postgrado.
Dos cartas de recomendación
Una carta explicando sobre: el proyecto de investigación o sus intereses de investigación,
el interés de participar en LASSSI 2017, y una lista indicando en orden jerárquico su
preferencia por los talleres ofrecidos (1-5).
Regarding certification of studies: Can I ask my university to certificate that I am currently
enrolled in a PhD program (higher than a masters program)? Or should I request
certification from previous degrees (masters)?
It is sufficient to certify your current situation (enrollment in a PhD program).
Respecto al certificado de estudios: ¿Puedo pedirle a mi actual que certifique que actualmente
estoy inscrito como estudiante de doctorado?, ¿O necesito un certificado de los niveles
educacionales previos?
Es suficiente con el certificado de situación actual (de inscripción en un programa de doctorado
actualmente).
Is there a letter style and a default language for the requested documents?
There is not a required style, but we recommend Times New Roman 12 with 1,5 line spacing. And
there is not a default language.
¿Hay algún formato de letra e idioma predefinido para los documentos requeridos?
No hay un formato obligatorio, pero recomendamos Times New Roman 12 con interlineado 1,5. No
hay un idioma predefinido.

Regarding the transportation costs prior to my arrival to Santiago: Is there any type of
subsidy?
No. The cost of the summer school is already subsidized by CIIR, and we do not have the possibility
to subsidize any type of tickets to Santiago de Chile. For these additional travel expenses, we
recommend applying for funds from your respective institution.
Sobre los pasajes previos a mi arribo a Santiago: ¿Hay algún tipo de subvención?
No. El costo de la escuela de verano ya está subsidiado por CIIR, y no tenemos la posibilidad de
subsidiar ningún tipo de pasaje hacia Santiago de Chile. Para estos costos adicionales de viaje, la
recomendación es postular a fondos de sus respectivas instituciones.
QUESTIONS ABOUT EDUCATION LEVEL/ PREGUNTAS SOBRE NIVEL
EDUCACIONAL
Education level requirements:
LASSSI is a Research Summer School directed at postgraduate students i.e. enrolled in a master´s
or Ph.D. program. If you´re an active researcher (in an academic institution), but you´re not
currently enrolled in a postgraduate program, you can apply if you explain well the reasons of your
interest in participating in LASSSI 2017. Yet, postgraduate students are our priority.
Requisitos de nivel educacional:
LASSSI es una escuela de verano de investigación dirigida a estudiantes de postgrado, es decir,
inscritos en un programa de Magíster o Doctorado. Si tú eres un investigador activo (en una
institución académica), pero no estás inscrito en un programa de postgrado actualmente, puedes
postular si es que explicas bien las razones de tú interés de participar en LASSSI 2017. De igual
modo la prioridad será para estudiantes de postgrado.
In the case of Ph.D. students, what does it mean that LASSSI is directed at students with an
registered doctoral thesis?
In this case, the minimum requirement is being enrolled in a doctoral program, and in the
application, you must specify the current phase of your studies. Therefore, if you are enrolled in a
graduate (Ph.D.) program, you're qualified to participate in the summer school.
En el caso de estudiantes de doctorado, ¿qué significa que sea para estudiantes con la tesis
doctoral inscrita?
En ese caso, el mínimo de requisitos es que debes estar inscrito en un programa doctoral, y en la
postulación, debes añadir tú actual fase de estudios. Por lo tanto, si estás inscrito en un programa
de doctorado, estás calificado para participar de la escuela de verano.
Am I still eligible for LASSSI if I expect to finish my master’s degree before January 2017?
If you are enrolled in a postgraduate program in January 2017 you are eligible for LASSSI (and
you have to note that in the application). On the other hand, if you have finished your MA
dissertation and do not have plans of pursuing a Ph.D., you may apply, but only if you´re an active
researcher (in an academic institution). In this last case you have to explain well why you would
want to participate.
¿Puedo postular a LASSSI si espero obtener mi título de magister antes de enero 2017?
Si para enero de 2017 estás inscrito en un programa de postgrado (magíster o doctorado) puedes
postular a LASSSI (lo cual debes indicar en la postulación). En el caso que termines tu tesis de
magíster y no tengas planes de proseguir un doctorado, puedes postular, pero solo si es que eres un
investigador activo (en una institución académica). En este último caso debes explicar muy bien
por qué quieres participar.
I have my Ph.D. degree, and I´m currently working at a University. Is the application only for
students? Or can I apply as well?
LASSI is directed at postgraduate students. In exceptional cases we also admit young academics at
the very beginning of their careers, but they must explain well their motivation for participating in
LASSSI. Priority will be given to graduate students.
Tengo mi grado de Doctor (Ph.D.), y actualmente trabajo en una universidad. Mi pregunta es:
¿la postulación es solo para estudiantes?, ¿o yo puedo postular?
LASSSI está dirigido a estudiantes de posgrado. En casos excepcionales admitimos académicos
jóvenes en el inicio de sus carreras, pero estos deben justificar bien su interés en participar.
LASSSI priorizará a estudiantes de postgrado.

The language of application documents:
The applications can be in Spanish or in English, but once accepted, the presentation of your
research must be in English, both orally and in writing.
¿Los documentos solicitados (como cartas de recomendación, o de interés) pueden ser escritos
en español o deben ser escritas solamente en inglés?
Las postulaciones pueden ser en español o en inglés, sin embargo una vez aceptada, se debe estar
dispuesto a presentar el trabajo en inglés, tanto de manera oral y escrita.
¿Para participar necesito manejar bien el idioma inglés?
Para participar en la escuela de verano es necesario poder leer textos académicos en inglés,
entender diálogos en este idioma y expresarse - aunque sea rudimentario - en este idioma. En los
talleres va a estar presente docentes bilingües, pero ellos no van a realizar traducción simultánea,
sino solamente facilitar la comunicación.
