The Christmas Story: Mary and Elizabeth
La Historia Navideña: María y Elizabet
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come and has
redeemed His people” (Luke 1:68).
“Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, que ha visitado y redimido a Su pueblo”
(Lucas 1:68).
One important element that is often missed in the Christmas story is the role
and character of two women: Mary and Elizabeth. We may know about Mary
as the mother of Jesus, but her relationship to Elizabeth and to other mothers
in the Old Testament helps us to understand the grace of God in using any of
us to accomplish His purposes.
Un elemento importante en la historia navideña que a veces sobrepasamos es
el papel y personaje de dos mujeres: María y Elizabet. Conocemos acerca de
María como la madre de Jesús, pero su relación a Elizabet y a otras madres
en el Antiguo Testamento nos ayuda a entender la gracia de Dios en el
usarnos para lograr Su propósito.
The Promise to Elizabeth - Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah were
descendants of Aaron, the first high priest in Israel. They were also blameless
in their following of God’s law. However, they had no children because
Elizabeth was barren; furthermore, because they were old, they expected
none (Luke 1:5-7). To those familiar with the Old Testament, Elizabeth’s age
and inability to conceive would evoke images of one of the most famous
mothers in the Old Testament: Abraham’s wife Sarah. Luke was trying to tell
us that something very special was about to happen!
La Promesa a Elizabet- Elizabet y su esposo Zacarías eran descendientes de
Arón, el primer sumo sacerdote en Israel. Eran sin culpa en cumplir la ley de
Dios. Sin embargo, no tenían hijos porque Elizabet era estéril y ambos eran
de edad avanzada. (Lucas 1:5-7). Para los que están familiarizados con el
Antiguo Testamento, la edad de Elizabet y su inhabilidad para concebir
invocan imágenes de otra famosa mujer del Antiguo Testamento: la esposa
de Abraham, Sara. Lucas nos está señalando que algo muy especial está por
suceder.
The Promise to Mary - Mary was a young woman of Galilee, a small region
in Judea. She was engaged to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David,
the greatest king in Israel’s history. Again, those familiar with the Old
Testament would be aware of the promise God had given to David (to have a
descendant forever on the throne) and to the expectation that this King of
David’s line would be the Messiah. In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s
pregnancy, Mary is visited by an angel who informs her that she will give
birth to a son who will be called the Son of the Most High God. Mary,
however, was a virgin! So she asked, "How?"
La Promesa a María- María era una jovencita de Galilea, una región
pequeña en Judea. Estaba comprometida con un hombre llamado José,
descendiente de David, el rey más grande de la historia de Israel. Los que
están familiarizados con el Antiguo Testamento estarían concientes de la
promesa que Dios hizo a David (de tener un descendiente en el trono para
siempre) y la expectación de que este rey del linaje de David sería el Mesías.
En el sexto mes del embarazo de Elizabet, un ángel visitó a María y le
informó que daría a luz un hijo: quien sería llamado el Hijo del Dios
Altísimo. Pero, María ¡era virgen! Y le preguntó al ángel, "¿Cómo?"
The Promise to Us (Nothing is Impossible with God) - The angel who
reported the expectation of this miraculous birth to Mary, after hearing her
question, proclaims, “…nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). Like
Mary and Elizabeth, we have areas in our lives where only God can help us.
Unlike Mary, however, we are not privy to angelic visitation! On the other
hand, we do have God’s words recorded in Scripture! Words recorded by
God’s messengers to remind us of His faithfulness and all He has done for
us. The Christmas message is meant to remind us of this truth - God is
always providing for us, making a way for us to know the security of our
relationship with Him
La Promesa para Nosotros (Nada es imposible para Dios)- El ángel que
dio este mensaje a María al escuchar su pregunta, proclama, “nada es
imposible para Dios” (Lucas 1:37). Como María y Elizabet tenemos áreas en
nuestras vidas en las que solo Dios nos puede ayudar. Nosotros no somos
privilegiados con visitaciones angélicas, como fue Maria. ¡Sin embargo
tenemos las palabras de Dios registradas en la Biblia! Palabras registradas
por los mensajeros de Dios para recordarnos de Su fidelidad y todo lo que ha
hecho por nosotros. El mensaje navideño tiene como propósito recordarnos
esta verdad-Dios siempre provee para nosotros, y nos da la seguridad de
nuestra relación con Él.
Identify areas where you struggle in believing God. Pray for God to increase
your faith and remember that “…nothing is impossible for God!”
Identifica las áreas en las que luchas para confiar en Dios. Pídele a Dios que
aumente tu fe y recuerda que nada es imposible para Dios.

the will of Him who sent Me. For My Father's will is that everyone
who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life,
and I will raise Him up at the last day" (John 6:38, 40).
Jesús dijo –
"Porque he bajado del cielo no para hacer Mi voluntad sino la
del que me envió. Porque la voluntad de Mi Padre es que todo
el que reconozca al Hijo y crea en Él, tenga vida eterna, y Yo lo
resucitaré en el día final" (Juan 6:38, 40).
