First, that suffering and dying in the flesh, He might redeem us from our sins and from hell. That He might teach us by example rather than word the way to salvation, and give us a perfect specimen of sanctity and of all virtues, but especially of the most profound humility. ‘Dig within thyself,’ says St. Augustine, ‘the foundation of humility, and so shalt thou arrive at the summit of charity.’ Another reason was that Christ wished to become our kinsman and brother, nay, our very flesh and blood, in order that He might deal as flesh with flesh, as man with man, as equal with equal. A third reason is that Christ took upon Him the meanness, the lowliness, the ills of our flesh, not for Himself but for us, to prick the icy hearts of men with the effectual stimulus of love and stir them up to love Him in return. For Christ, in His Incarnation, is ever calling aloud to us; I have given Myself all to thee, do thou in turn give thyself whole to Me. For this did I take flesh upon Me, that thou might say with Paul, I live now not I, but Christ lives in me. A fourth reason is that we could not conceive the idea of God, who is a pure and uncreated spirit, so God clothed Himself in our flesh that we might see Him with our eyes and hear Him with our ears. It is this that the Church sings in the Preface of the Mass of the Nativity—’Because by the Mystery of the Incarnate Word a new effulgence of Thy glory has shone upon the eyes of our soul, that coming to know God visibly we may by Him be rapt into yearning after things that not seen.” ~THIS DAY CHRIST IS BORN~ This day Christ is born: This day the savior hath appeared: This day Angels are singing on earth, Archangels are rejoicing: This day the just are glad and say, Glory to God in high heaven, Alleluia. --Theme Song for Christmas Day the Magnificat antiphon from Vespers THE PARADOX OF CHRISTMAS ~A TIME OF JOY & SORROW~ “Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place” (Lk. 2:15). There is a paradox at Christmas time. On the one hand, Christmas is a season of light, love, joy, and peace. We celebrate festive liturgies, light candles, decorate trees, sing carols, rejoice in the company of loved ones, eat cookies, drink eggnog and apple cider, attend parties, and open presents. It is a time of joyful celebration. On the other hand, the traditionally happy holidays are an especially difficult time for those who are grieving, or who are alone. At this joyous time of year, scenes of happy families are not what some are experiencing. People who are alone, people who have experienced the loss of a spouse to death or divorce, or the death of a child, or close friend, find Christmas to be a season of constant despair, rather than perpetual hope. What should be a happy time of year is in fact a depressing time because some are reminded of everything they don’t have in their lives. People suffer physically, emotionally, and spiritually. ~THE ANSWER~ What is the answer to the paradox of Christmas? How do we reconcile ourselves to it? The answer to the paradox of Christmas is Jesus Christ. Jesus is the key to understanding the paradox of Christmas. Jesus holds the key to Christmas joy in his tiny hands. On the one hand, He is the reason for our love, joy, and peace. Jesus came into our world to free us from the fear of death, to dry our tears, and scatter darkness from our hearts. Everyone has good reason to rejoice because He became one of us “in the wonder of the Incarnation.” On the other hand, Jesus is the solution to the sadness and emptiness in our lives. Jesus came to give us hope and joy. Our hope and joy come from the fact that our Savior came to be with us, and take us with Him. Jesus fills our empty hearts with his grace, mercy, and peace. Jesus is the answer to the paradox of Christmas. He scatters darkness and brings light. He drives out evil ~TO SAVE US ALL~ My brothers and sisters, the Baby of Bethlehem shows us the power of God’s love for the world. God gave us the greatest Christmas gift ever when he sent his only-begotten Son “to save us all from Satan’s power,” as the song goes. He is the key to the paradox of Christmas. This feast day appropriately falls within the 12 days of Christmas where we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Involved in the mystery of the Incarnation– where God joined to Himself human nature–is the mystery that God also joined to Himself a human family. This reveals that God allows His human creatures, as bearing the image of God, to play very, very important roles in redemptive history. And God continues to use humans to play a role in redemptive history–particularly through the family. ~IMAGE OF THE DIVINE~ The Holy Trinity entrusted two human beings with the tremendous role of being the human family of the Incarnate Second Person of the Trinity. God made the universe, yet placed Himself inside the womb of a human mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. God is the creator of powerful angelic beings, yet He gave Himself a human father as a guardian and protector, St. Joseph. That God throughout the ages invites humans into His grand story and uses them to accomplish His will is simply profound. Surely we can marvel with Mary in her Magnificat, “The Almighty has done great things for me” (Luke 1:46-55). When we reflect on the nature of the Holy Trinity, we see that the human family–father, mother, and child–images the Divine. The Trinity is a unity of three Divine Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, in One Divine Being. The inner life of the Trinity is one of total self-giving love between the Father and the Son, in such a way that the Holy Spirit, a Third Person, proceeds from their union. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father as the first principle and, by the eternal gift of this to the Son, from the communion of both the Father and the Son” (CCC, 264). The Person of the Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the communion of the Person of the Father with the Person of the Son. When we reflect on this inner life of the Trinity, we now see why Genesis says that God created man and woman to be his image, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27).
