FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA

Dear Friends,
This Sunday, our first reading is from the Book
of Jonah. The story captures the imagination of all –
especially the young. What could more cool than being
swallowed by a big fish and being spit out alive after
three days? But when we look at the story a little more
closely we see that the message is one that is most
significant and one that we who are adults need to hear
in a new and serious way.
Jonah is called by God to preach repentance to
the Ninevites. They are a pagan, faithless, and sinful
people. Jonah seeks to escape from God’s call to
preach repentance to them since he does not want them
to repent – he wants them annihilated. Jonah relents at
last and obeys the Lord’s command. To his great
chagrin, his preaching is effective. The people of
Nineveh are moved to sorrow for their sins and turn
back to God with great sincerity. Jonah is now angry
with God. “He prayed to the Lord, ‘O Lord, is this not
what I said while I was still in my own country? This
is why I fled at first toward Tarshish. I knew that you
are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger,
abounding in kindness, repenting of punishment. So
now Lord, please take my life from me; it is better for
me to die than to live.’”

greater than His love. There is no person who He does
not call to Himself. Even as we deal with the reality of
unimaginable acts of violence and evil perpetrated by
people throughout our world, we must continue to pray
for them. In the end they may respond or they may not
respond – that is God’s concern. If we are relying upon
a “gracious and merciful God, slow to anger,
abounding in kindness, repenting of punishment” for
ourselves, we had better be willing to pray for the
conversion and blessing of our enemies as well.

2015 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL
BEGINS! This month Bishop Loverde
will send a mailing regarding the 2015
Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA). The
theme for the 2015 BLA is “Stewards of
Christ Sharing Gospel Joy!” After
reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you,
please prayerfully consider making a sacrificial pledge of
support to this important appeal that funds many programs
and ministries that serve thousands of people in our
diocese. When we join together as one Body in Christ, we
can do so much for so many!
FRASSATI FAIRFAX Under the patronage
Jonah storms off to a deserted place outside the
city to sulk. The sun beats down upon his head so God
caused to spring up a gourd plant which provided
shade and relief. The next morning a worm came and
destroyed the plant. Scorching winds and the heat of
the sun then followed. Jonah again wishes for death.
And now we come to the point of the story: “But God
said to Jonah, ‘Do you have a right to be angry over
the gourd plant?’ Jonah answered, ‘I have a right to be
angry – angry enough to die.’ Then the Lord said,
‘You are concerned over the gourd plant which cost
you no effort and which you did not grow; it came up
in one night and in one night it perished. And should I
not be concerned over the great city of Nineveh, in
which there are more than a hundred and twenty
thousand persons who cannot know their right hand
from their left, not to mention all the animals.”
How often indeed we are “Jonah” - Relying
upon God’s mercy for ourselves and His vengeance for
others! God desires all to be saved. There is no sin
