bucket are two members of the LGE class of
1978. Joe Smith, Foreman and Russ Ruhland,
Plant Superintendent, have been stalwarts of
the Hawarden crew for 34 years. Both Joe and
Russ personify the safety culture at Hawarden.
Both demonstrate and lead with an emphasis on
safety.
It hasn’t always been this way - in fact - in the
fifteen years prior to Russ becoming superintendent, Hawarden had 71 MSHA reportable
injuries. In the last fifteen years, under Russ
and Joe’s leadership, there have only been six
(zero this year) reportable injuries!
As Joe stated: “We now have safety awareness
and look out for each other. It is hammered into our heads every day.”
Russ quipped, “I do stress safety every day. I haven’t used a hammer yet, but it is the most
important message my team receives.”
Congratulations to Russ, Joe and the entire Hawarden crew for raising the bar on safety!

It’s that time of year when schools re-open and
school children and buses have returned to your
neighborhood roadways. Motorists are urged to use
extra caution around school buses and school zones.
Be aware that more children will be at bus stops and
walking or riding bikes along streets to school. It is
essential for the children's safety that adults and
children know and obey traffic safety rules. Volume 12, Issue 34
