In anticipation that the rail lines and station will be located
in downtown Gilroy, the City has begun updating its
Downtown Specific Plan. The updated plan will guide
private and public development and improvements in
the downtown area over the next 20 years, with a focus

In 2008, California voted to approve the building of a
high-speed rail system that would connect the state’s
major cities in the Bay Area, Central Valley, and Southern California. In 2012, the California High-Speed Rail
Authority (CHSRA) selected the City of Gilroy as the
location for one of the stations that will become part
of this important statewide project. By the end of 2017,
the CHSRA is expected to decide on the alignment and
location of the new rail lines and station, either east of
the Outlets or in Downtown Gilroy. The CHSRA could
start work for the new train station as early as 2018,
however, it would not be completed and operational
until 2025.

• A community workshop to receive input on the alternative land use plans will be held on Tuesday, June 28th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the Eliot Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room (475 Old Gilroy St.
• Light snacks and childcare will be provided during the workshop.
HOW WILL THE NEW STATION BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY?
• Create a demand for services near the station that will result in more local job opportunities.
• Attract additional visitors to the City of Gilroy providing an economic boost for local businesses.
• Provide an alternative means of transportation, helping to alleviate traffic in the region.
WHAT ISSUES AFFECTING OUR COMMUNITY CAN WE EXPECT?
• The high-speed rail will widen the existing railroad right-of-way affecting adjacent homes and
businesses, and require more land for a new station and parking.
• Traffic and noise levels will likely increase in the area of the planned station.
• Some businesses and homes near the planned station may need to be removed. The CHSRA
will work to lessen these unavoidable impacts.
