Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. This Saturday, July 16th is the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the patroness of the Carmelite Order. In the scripture, Mt. Carmel is the place where through the Prophet Elijah, God made his presence known to the people of Israel and their false prophets who had all turned to worship false gods. It was on Mt. Carmel that the people of Israel once again returned to the worship of the true God and the false prophets were destroyed. It was also on Mt. Carmel that the first Carmelites lived as hermits in the 12th and 13th centuries. Finally, it was on Mt. Carmel that we received the gift of the scapular which is a beautiful symbol of devotion to the Mother of God. Mt. Carmel, like all mountains in the scripture, is a place where people have found God’s presence. Years ago, while on a pilgrimage in the Holy Land, I spent some time on Mt. Carmel and was awed to be standing in the same place where the great Prophet Elijah once stood and proclaimed God’s presence. The feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel reminds us that God’s presence is always with us and that he has given us the gift of his dear mother to be our protector and guide. On another note, please remember that during these summer months when some of our parishioners go away for vacation and to visit family, we still need your weekly financial support. Unfortunately, the many expenses of running such a magnificent basilica do not take a vacation. In the fall I will be giving you a financial report on the financial state of the parish and you will see that we are almost completely dependent on your weekly offering to help us meet our many expenses. As always, I thank you for your generosity and for your tremendous support of this great community! Help Support the Basilica When you plan your weekly offering, please remember that our parish is facing serious financial difficulties and we need your help. Together by the grace of God we can insure that Boston’s Basilica will serve God’s People for many years to come. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, baptism is the Church’s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. Christ Himself ordered His disciples to preach the Gospel to all nations and to baptize those who accept the message of the Gospel. In His encounter with Nicodemus (John 3:1-21), Christ made it clear that baptism was necessary for salvation: “Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” The sacrament is not a mere formality; it is the very mark of a Christian, because it brings us into new life in Christ. The Rite of Baptism is celebrated each month at the Basilica. We require that at least one parent be a registered parishioner and attend Mass here on a regular basis. Raising your child in the parish community is an important aspect of living and teaching the faith. Parishioner registration forms and baptism applications are available at the Rectory Office. The form must be fullt completed and returned with an official birth certificate attached. Baptisms occur every month: Spanish – First Sunday of the month at 1:30pm English – Second Sunday of the month at 1:30pm Children over the age of 7 years old must attend Religious Education classes before being baptized. If an adult wishes to be baptized, registration is required through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). www.bostonsbasilica.com/sacraments NEWS & EVENTS Thank You We extend a very special word of thanks to the members of our Haitian Community, their raffle was a tremendous success and raised over $10,000 for the church!
