En el marco de la campaña de capacitación que este
Consulado está llevando a cabo para concientizar a las
autoridades estadounidenses sobre la importancia de la
notificación consular, el 27 de enero la Cónsul Alicia
Kerber ofreció una presentación sobre este tema en el
“20th Annual Sheriffs’ Administration and Management
Seminar”. La presentación se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de
Topeka, Kansas, y contó con la asistencia de más de 40
alguaciles de los estados de Kansas y Missouri.
Durante la exposición se informó sobre los diferentes
servicios que prestan los Consulados
de México en Estados Unidos,
resaltando la importancia de la
Matrícula Consular y sus elementos de
seguridad, y se proporcionó el número
emergencias del área de protección,
en el que el Consulado recibe
información
relacionada
con
nacionales mexicanos las 24 horas del
día y los siete días de la semana.
Finalmente,
se
distribuyeron
materiales informativos sobre la
notificación consular a los asistentes,
que ayudarán a la población mexicana detenida a conocer
sus derechos y servirán a las autoridades para cumplir
con las obligaciones establecidas en la Convención de
Viena sobre Relaciones Consulares.
En el seminario también participaron los Cónsules
Honorarios de Sudáfrica y la República de Eslovaquia,
Lee Schultz y Ross Marine, respectivamente, quienes
también realizaron una presentación sobre la notificación
consular.
Under the framework of the campaign that this Consulate
is heading to increase awareness of US authorities on the
importance of consular notification, on January 27, Consul
Alicia Kerber offered a presentation on this subject at the
“20th Annual Sheriffs’ Administration and Management
Seminar”. The presentation took place in Topeka, Kansas,
and had an attendance of over 40 sheriffs from the states
of Kansas and Missouri.
During the event, officials received information on the
different services that the Consulates of Mexico in the
United States offer, highlighting the
importance of the Matrícula Consular
(consular identification card) and its
security measures, and obtained the
emergency number of the Protection
Department, where the Consulate
receives information related to Mexican
citizens 24/7. Finally, printed materials
on the consular notification were
distributed among officials, which will
help the detained Mexican population
to know their rights and will aid
authorities to meet with the obligations
established in the Vienna Convention on Consular
Relations.
At the event the Honorary Consuls of South Africa and
Slovakia, Lee Schultz and Ross Marine, respectively, also
participated and gave information on consular notification.
Capacitación consular para autoridades de la Patrulla
de Caminos de Kansas y Missouri
Consular training for Highway Patrol officers in
Kansas and Missouri
El 16 de enero la Cónsul Alicia Kerber ofreció una
presentación a 30 oficiales de la Patrulla de Caminos de
los estados de Kansas y Missouri, en la ciudad de St.
Joseph, Missouri. Al igual que en el caso de la
capacitación a los alguaciles del estado, durante el evento
se ofreció información sobre los servicios del Consulado,
así como de la solidez legal de las identificaciones que se
expiden en el mismo, con el objetivo de familiarizar a los
oficiales de la Patrulla de Caminos con las identificaciones
mexicanas.
En el evento estuvo presente el Agente Michael Kaste,
Special Agent in Charge del FBI, quien habló sobre la
investigación y arresto en Wichita del Sr. Terry L. Loewen,
ciudadano norteamericano acusado en un tribunal federal
por intentar hacer estallar un coche bomba en el
Aeropuerto de dicha ciudad.
Como resultado de esta presentación se fortaleció el
acercamiento entre el Consulado y las autoridades
estadounidenses y se acordó llevar a cabo pláticas
informativas en el Consulado sobre la seguridad en las
carreteras, lo que beneficiará a la comunidad mexicana
residente en Kansas y Missouri.
On January 16th, Consul Alicia Kerber gave a presentation
to 30 Kansas and Missouri Highway Patrol officers in St.
Joseph, Missouri. As in the case of the sheriffs’
presentation, during the event the Consul offered
information on the Consulate´s services, as well as the
legal strength of the documents issued by it, with the goal
of acquainting Highway Patrol officers with the Mexicans
identifications.
At the event, Agent Michael Kaste, Special Agent in
Charge of the FBI, spoke about the investigation and
arrest in Wichita of Mr. Terry. L. Loewen, an American
citizen accused in federal courts of attempting to detonate
a bomb at that city´s airport.
As a result of this presentation the relationship between
the Consulate and US officers was strengthened and the
officers agreed to provide informational workshops at the
Consulate on highway safety, which will benefit the
Mexican citizens that reside in Kansas and Missouri .

Feria de inscripción al mercado de seguros de salud
Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Fair
Los pasados 8 y 9 de marzo el Consulado, Enroll
Wyandotte, Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, El
Centro Inc., Amerigroup y United Health
Care, organizaron una feria de
inscripción al mercado de seguros de
salud para la comunidad hispana en las
instalaciones del Memorial Hall en
Kansas City, Kansas.
On March 8th and 9th, the Consulate, Enroll Wyandotte,
Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, El Centro Inc.,
Amerigroup and United Health Care,
organized a health insurance marketplace
enrollment fair for the Hispanic community at
Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.
El objetivo de la feria fue el de inscribir al
mayor número posible de hispanos en el
mercado de seguros de salud y brindar
información general sobre las nuevas
leyes de salud en Estados Unidos. Asimismo, se buscó
dar servicio a la población inmigrante que no cuenta con
la posibilidad de obtener un seguro médico bajo esta ley,
para lo cual se ofrecieron pruebas médicas gratuitas
(colesterol, glucosa, presión, entre otras) y se brindó
información sobre clínicas de salud y organizaciones
comunitarias, en las que inmigrantes
pueden obtener servicios médicos a
bajo costo.
Durante los dos días, se logró inscribir
a más de 120 personas y se contó con
una asistencia total de más de 500
personas quienes, adicionalmente al
proceso de inscripción, pudieron hacer
uso de los demás recursos y servicios
disponibles.
The goal of the fair was to enroll the highest
number of Hispanics possible in the
marketplace and provide general information
on the new healthcare laws in the United
States. The event also aimed to bring
services to immigrants that couldn’t apply for
insurance under the marketplace, for which free health
screenings (cholesterol, glucose, BMI, among others) and
information on health clinics and community
organizations, where they can obtain health services at
low cost, were provided.
On both days, we succeeded in enrolling over
120 people in the marketplace and over 500
people attended the overall event and received,
aside from the enrollment assistance, help from
other resources and services available.
Semana de Educación Financiera 2014
Del 10 al 14 de marzo los Consulados de México en Estados Unidos y Canadá celebraron la Semana de Educación Financiera
2014, con objeto de orientar a la población mexicana sobre la mejor administración de sus recursos. Durante esta semana,
se realizaron 10 talleres informativos en las instalaciones del Consulado y cinco entrevistas de radio, en los que se abordaron
temas como pago de impuestos, créditos, compra de vivienda, uso productivo de las remesas, bancarización, entre otros. En
el transcurso de la semana asistieron aproximadamente 400 personas a las actividades y se contó con el apoyo de más de
15 socios locales.
Por otra parte, en el marco de esta Semana, se firmó un acuerdo entre el Consulado y Enterprise Bank, quien aceptará la
Matrícula Consular como identificación válida para abrir cuentas bancarias y obtener préstamos y ofrecerá asesoría financiera
a los connacionales en el Consulado. Este acuerdo representará grandes beneficios para la comunidad mexicana en el área
de Kansas City, en especial porque Enterprise Bank ofrece créditos para compra de vivienda, automóvil o para iniciar un
negocio a personas que cuentan con el número ITIN (Individual Taxpayer
Identification Number), sin importar su estatus migratorio.
Financial Education Week 2014
On March 10 to 14 the Consulates of Mexico in the United States and Canada
celebrated the 2014 Financial Education Week, with the goal of educating the
Mexican population on the better use of their resources. During this week, 10
workshops were provided at the Consulate, as well as five radio interviews, that
covered subjects like tax preparation, credit, homeownership, remittances,
banking, among others. Approximately 400 people attended the activities during
the week, which were organized with the support of over 15 local institutions.
Also, under the framework of this week, the Consulate signed an agreement with
Enterprise Bank, who will now accept the consular identification card as a valid
identification to open bank accounts and obtain loans and will also offer financial
advice to Mexican citizens at the Consulate. This agreement represents great
benefits for the Mexican community in the Kansas City area, especially since
Enterprise Bank offers home, car and new business loans to people that present an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification
Number), regardless of their immigration status.

Clausura de la exhibición “Remembranzas”
El 31 de enero se realizó la clausura de la exhibición “Remembranzas”, del artista mexicano
Galdino López, en el espacio cultural del Consulado. La muestra artística constó de 32
pinturas al óleo del artista Galdino López, inspiradas en el mestizaje cultural de México,
resultado de la unión entre culturas prehispánicas y la cultura española.
Galdino López inició su carrera artística en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la
Academia de San Carlos y ha participado en más de 20 distintas exhibiciones en México y
Estados Unidos. El artista actualmente reside en la ciudad de Manhattan, Kansas.
Closing of the exhibition “Remembrances”
On January 31st the exhibition “Remembrances”, of Mexican artist Galdino López, at the
Consulate cultural space was closed to the public. The exhibition consisted of 32 oil painting
of Galdino López, inspired in the cultural mix (mestizaje) of Mexico, that resulted of the union
between prehispanic and Spanish cultures.
Galdino López started his artistic career in the National School of Arts at the Academy of San
Carlos and has participated in over 20 exhibitions in Mexico and the Unites States. The artist
currently resides in Manhattan, Kansas.

El pasado 7 de marzo, en el marco del “First Friday” celebrado
en el distrito Crossroads, se llevó a cabo la inauguración de la
exposición fotográfica “Retratos de México” en el espacio
cultural del Consulado. La muestra
artística, que permaneció abierta al
público hasta el 31 de marzo, se
compone de 34 fotografías de
distintos estados de la república
mexicana, así como la exhibición de
tres piezas de cerámica de Mata
Ortiz, Chihuahua, y tres trajes
regionales, de los estados de
Jalisco, Oaxaca y Chiapas.

comunitarios, jóvenes profesionistas, académicos, entre otros.
Cabe mencionar que también asistieron a la inauguración los
Consejeros que forman parte de la Comisión de Salud y
Deportes del Consejo Consultivo del Instituto de los Mexicanos
en el Exterior, quienes se reunieron en la ciudad de Kansas
City el sábado 8 de marzo para tratar temas relativos a esa
comisión.
The event had an attendance of over 100 people, that included
local authorities, community leaders, young professionals,
academics, among others. Also at the event were members of
the Commission on Health and Sports from the Advisory
Council of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, which gathered in
Kansas City for a meeting on March 8th.

Reunión sobre oportunidades de comercio en Kansas City
Como parte de los esfuerzos que este Consulado realiza para promover las relaciones económicas y comerciales entre
México y los estados de Kansas y Missouri, se han llevado a cabo varias reuniones con representantes de Port Authority of
Kansas City, Missouri, Central Exchange, Sister Cities, Futurallia Kansas City, funcionarios de la alcaldía de Kansas City y
concejales de la ciudad.
En las reuniones se ha hablado sobre distintas oportunidades de colaboración (organización de eventos y ferias, misiones
comerciales, entre otras) entre el Consulado de México y representantes de Kansas City para promover el comercio y
beneficiar a México y Estados Unidos.
Meeting on trade opportunities in Kansas City
As part of the efforts that this Consulate undertakes to promote economic and trade relations between Mexico and the states
of Kansas and Missouri, several meeting have been held at the Consulate with representatives from the Port Authority of
Kansas City, Missouri, Central Exchange, Sister Cities, Futurallia Kansas City, as well as councilmembers and city officials.
During the meetings the Consulate of Mexico and representatives from Kansas City have talked about several opportunities
for collaboration (organization of events and fairs, trade missions, among others) to promote trade and benefit Mexico and the
United States.

El viernes 7 de febrero se llevó a cabo la primera reunión
sobre la Red de Talentos Mexicanos en las instalaciones
del Consulado, con objeto de compartir entre jóvenes
mexicanos residentes en la circunscripción qué son las
redes de talentos y a conformar un Capítulo en esta
ciudad.
On February 7th, the first meeting on the Mexican Talent
Network took place at the Consulate, with the goal of
sharing among young Mexican citizens that live in the area
what are the talent networks and form a Chapter in Kansas
City.
Los 26 jóvenes que
asistieron a la reunión
se
encuentran
trabajando
en
distintas ciudades en
la circunscripción o
cursando estudios de
maestría o doctorado
en
universidades
locales y cuentan con
perfiles diversos en
sectores como el
aeroespacial, tecnologías de la información, diseño
gráfico, trabajo social, biología, ecología y medicina.
En seguimiento a esta reunión, el Consulado está
trabajando con los jóvenes a fin de que puedan consolidar
el Capítulo Kansas City de la Red de Talentos Mexicanos
y empezar a trabajar en proyectos que favorezcan el
desarrollo educativo y dar seguimiento a proyectos que
podrían beneficiar a México.
The 26 young people that

are
currently working in different cities
in Kansas and Missouri or
studying
their
masters
or
doctorate degrees in local
universities; and come from
different
backgrounds
and
industries
like
aerospace,
information technologies, graphic
design, social work, biology,
ecology and medicine.
As a follow up on this meeting, the Consulate is working
with the attendees in order to consolidate a Kansas City
Chapter of the Mexican Talent Network and start working
in projects that favor educational development and
continue projects that could benefit Mexico.
DOCUMENTACIÓN/DOCUMENTATION
Durante el primer trimestre del año se llevaron a cabo tres consulados
móviles a las ciudades de St. Louis, Missouri; Dodge City y Wichita, Kansas.
El objetivo de los consulados móviles es brindar servicios y expedir
matrículas y pasaportes a los mexicanos que residen en lugares alejados de
la sede consular. En ocasiones, también se ofrece asesoría legal y financiera,
así como ferias de salud, para lograr que la comunidad mexicana en esas
ciudades obtenga atención integral.
En lo que va del año se han atendido a más de 1500 mexicanos en el marco
de los consulados móviles. Las personas atendidas ahora cuentan con un
documento que les permitirá identificarse adecuadamente y realizar trámites
cotidianos.
During the first trimester of this year three mobile consulates were held in the cities of St. Louis, Missouri; Dodge City and
Wichita, Kansas. The goal of the mobile consulates is to provide services and issue consular identification cards and passports
to Mexicans that live in cities far away from Kansas City. On occasion, legal and financial advice, as well as health fairs, are
also offered during those mobile consulates in order to bring comprehensive services to the population.
So far, over 1500 Mexicans have received services during the mobile consulates. These people now possess a document that
will allow them to identify themselves adequately and perform daily activities and paperwork.

KENIA JAZMÍN REYNA BLANCO
Yazmín es una estudiante de Medicina, recientemente graduada de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Autónoma del
Estado de Morelos. En 2012 fue elegida para participar en un programa de intercambio académico entre su universidad y el
Centro México de la Universidad de Kansas, mismo que fue consolidado mediante un Memorándum de Entendimiento firmado
entre las dos Universidades.
Por medio del programa, Yazmín pudo realizar su servicio social en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Kansas, como
parte del equipo de Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health, enfocándose en una investigación sobre las disparidades que
existen en materia de salud en la comunidad hispana que reside en el suroeste del estado de Kansas. Asimismo, Yazmín
participó activamente en ferias de salud para la comunidad mexicana, promoviendo información sobre enfermedades
cardiovasculares y diabetes, nutrición, actividad física y acceso a servicios de salud, con objeto de mejorar la calidad de vida
y prevenir enfermedades en la comunidad.
Al terminar el programa de intercambio en 2013 Yazmín volvió a México, donde ha podido aplicar en su vida profesional los
conocimientos adquiridos durante su estancia en Kansas. Actualmente se desempeña como Directora en la Fundación para
la Formación Integral en Busca de un México Mejor I.A.P., organización sin fines de lucro que busca ayudar a minorías étnicas
marginadas en todo el país mediante la distribución de medicamentos y brindando atención médica gratuita.
Yazmín is a medical student, recently graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de
Morelos. In 2012, she was chosen to participate in an academic exchange program between her university and the University
of Kansas Medical Center, program which was consolidated through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between both
universities.
Through this program, Yazmín started her community service at the University of Kansas Medical Center, as part of the Juntos
Center for Advancing Latino Health team, focusing on research on health disparities among the Hispanic community that
resides in southwest Kansas. Yazmín also participated in health fairs for the Mexican community, promoting information on
cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, nutrition, physical activity and access to health services, with the goal of improving the
quality of life and preventing disease in the community.
After finishing the program in 2013 Yazmín returned to Mexico, where she has been able to use the knowledge obtained
during her time in Kansas in her daily work. She currently works as Director on the Fundación para la Formación Integral en
Busca de un México Mejor I.A.P., a nonprofit organization which seeks to help marginalized ethnic minorities across the
country through the distribution of medicine and providing free health services.
DESCUBRE MÉXICO/DISCOVER MEXICO
ZACATECAS
FUNDADA A MEDIADOS del siglo xvi, la laberíntica ciudad de
Zacatecas está poblada de construcciones civiles y religiosas
elaboradas sobre todo en cantera rosa, lo que la convierte en una
de las ciudades más bellas y representativas de la arquitectura
colonial. Quizás el edificio más impresionante de su Centro
Histórico sea la majestuosa Catedral, cuya fachada es una
muestra ejemplar del arte barroco. Pero la lista no se detiene ahí,
pues la riqueza minera del estado permitió la construcción de
edificios extraordinarios. Entre las calles a desnivel, los callejones
y las plazas de intrincada traza, también se alzan el Teatro
Fernando Calderón, el Ex Convento de San Francisco, la
Alhóndiga, la Casa de la Moneda, el Palacio de Justicia, el Ex
Templo de San Agustín y el acueducto El Cubo, cuyos elevados
arcos de ladrillo rosado se han convertido en uno de los
emblemas de la ciudad. Dos de las mejores maneras de empezar a conocer Zacatecas son el teleférico, con una vista
panorámica a 85 metros de altura, y las famosas “callejoneadas zacatecanas”, en las que la gente recorre la ciudad bailando
al ritmo de la tambora y bebiendo mezcal.
Además de su célebre arquitectura, la ciudad de Zacatecas esconde muchos otros tesoros que vale la pena descubrir. Esta
capital, por ejemplo, cuenta con más de 20 museos, entre ellos algunos imprescindibles, como el de Pedro Coronel, con una
colección de máscaras que pasa por piezas antiguas de varias partes del mundo, las coloridas obras del reconocido artista
zacatecano, cuadros de grandes artistas como Picasso, Dalí y Miró y una interesantísima biblioteca; el Manuel Felguérez,
considerado el más importante de arte abstracto en América latina que, además de un acervo de este artista contemporáneo,
alberga la fabulosa exhibición de los murales seleccionados para representar a México en la Exposición universal de Osaka,
Japón, en 1970, y el Zacatecano, dedicado al minucioso arte de los huicholes y su cultura, complementado por una serie de
imágenes religiosas populares.
FOUNDED IN THE MID- 16TH century, the labyrinthine city of Zacatecas is full of civil and religious constructions hewn from
the local pink-hued stone, making it one of Mexico’s most beautiful cities, which abounds with elegant Colonial-era buildings.
Perhaps the most impressive of all in the Historic Center is the majestic Cathedral, whose façade is a fine example of Baroque
art. The wealth from silver mining in the area al-lowed for the construction of some extraordinary build-ings. Among the splitlevel streets, alleys and plazas, are reminders of an elegant past, such as the glorious Fernan-do Calderón Theater, the
former-Convent of San Francis-co, the Alhóndiga, the former grain store; the Treasury, the Court building, the former Temple
of San Agustín and the aqueduct known as El Cubo, whose elevated pink-stone arches have been converted, over time, into
one of the city’s landmarks.
One of the best ways to see the sights of the city is a ride on the cable car, which offers panoramic views from a height of 255
feet, while the city’s famous narrow alleys always offer some local color in the form of pedestrians dancing their way along to
the rhythm of drums and sip-ping mescal.
And there’s more. In addition to the celebrated ar-chitectural gems, the city of Zacatecas is a treasure trove of sights, and
houses no fewer than 20 museums, such as the Pedro Coronel Museum, with its collection of antiques from around the world,
as well as some stunningly colorful works of the Zacatecas-born painter and interspersed with grand masters such as Picasso,
Dalí and Miró, and housing a very interesting library; the Manuel Felguérez Museum, housed in a former prison, is
considered to house one of the most important collections of abstract art in Latin America, and plays host to not only to
Felguérez’s works but also a fabulous exhibition of murals by Mexican artists who repre-sented Mexico in Osaka, Japan., in
1969. Last but by no means least is the Zacatecano Museum, showcasing the in-tricate handicrafts produced by the Huichol
ethnic group, alongside representative pieces of their culture, and comple-mented by a series of popular religious images.
