2nd Sunday of Advent C Homily
Who is this man? John the Baptist is one of the most important persons in
salvation history. We know his name, something about the clothes he wore, some
of the foods he ate, what he did for God and Jesus, the name of his parents
(Zechariah and Elizabeth), the name of his aunt and uncle and cousin (Mary,
Joseph and Jesus), how he died and the circumstances of his martyrdom.
He is a man who was on a mission for God, knew who he was and knew his role
for the sake of the Kingdom of God. He carried out his mission and because of him
countless souls have been saved for God.
Isaiah prophesied about him some 700 years earlier: “A voice cries out: In the
desert prepare the way of the Lord.”
John the Baptist placed a condition on those who came to him for baptism: they
had to repent of their sins. Did John ask each person to state their sins to him or
did he ask a question such as: “Are you sorry for your sins?” We don’t know.
Scripture doesn’t reveal the formula.
Nonetheless, one had to satisfy John the Baptist’s requirement to repent of one’s
sins prior to being baptized. The word “repentance” is translated from the Greek
word metanoia; defined as: “to have compunction to reverse thinking and
behavior.” Therefore, those coming to John the Baptist to receive baptism for the
forgiveness of their sins had to make a conscious commitment to change and to
reverse the sinful thoughts which led to their sinful behaviors.
John the Baptist humbled himself before the Lord and his disciples when he
testified: “One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and
loosen the thongs of his sandals.”
In John’s time it was the role of the lowest-ranking slave of the household to
remove the sandals from the master’s feet at the end of the day and then wash
the master’s feet. On hearing this, John’s disciples and the others must have
bowed their heads, in awesome wonder, and, lifting their hearts and minds to
Heaven, asked God, “Who is this man!?”

¿Quién es este hombre? Juan el Bautista es una de las personas más importantes en
la historia de la salvación. Sabemos su nombre, algo acerca de la ropa que llevaba,
