You may have learned at home to speak, read, and
write fluently in Spanish. You may have grown up
hearing Spanish and learned the language formally
at school. You may have learned Spanish for the
first time in a classroom setting.
However you’ve learned Spanish, your language
skills can earn you up to 12 college credits.
What is the CLEP®
Spanish Language examination?
The CLEP® Spanish Language exam measures your
ability to understand written and spoken Spanish.
The exam, administered on computer, is approximately
90 minutes long and is comprised of two listening
sections and one reading section. The questions require
you to demonstrate your knowledge of vocabulary
and grammar, as well as your ability to comprehend
written and spoken Spanish. The exam is scored on
a scale of 20–80.
There are 2,900 colleges and universities
that grant credit for successful CLEP scores.
Most award 6 or 12 credits for the CLEP Spanish
Language exam, depending on the score earned.
The American Council on Education recommends
that colleges grant 6 credits for scores of 50–62 and
12 credits for scores of 63 and above.

Step one: Visit www.collegeboard.com/clep to learn
more about the exam.
Step two: Find out your college’s CLEP policy
by contacting your admissions office, test center
or academic adviser.
Step three: Register to take your exam by contacting
a CLEP test center and making an appointment.
Step four: Take your CLEP test!
Save with CLEP
The cost of a CLEP exam is $72, a fraction of the tuition
and fees for the corresponding course. The test center
may charge you an administration fee of approximately
$15 in addition to the $72 exam fee.
Prepare to succeed
with CLEP Spanish
Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the contents of at
least one Spanish textbook used in courses during the
first two years of college Spanish. In addition to studying
basic vocabulary, you should understand and be able
to apply the grammatical principles that make up
the language.
To improve your reading comprehension, read passages
from textbooks, short magazine and newspaper articles,
and other printed or online material.
To improve your listening comprehension, seek
opportunities to hear the language spoken by native
speakers and to converse with native speakers: join
organizations with Spanish-speaking members, listen
to Spanish-language radio and television broadcasts,
and attend Spanish movies.

Prepárate para tener éxito
en el CLEP de español
Familiarízate a fondo con el contenido de por lo menos
un libro de texto que se utilice durante los primeros dos
años de español universitario. Además de estudiar el
vocabulario básico, debes entender y saber aplicar los
