Artist's statement
I like to experiment with different media: mixing video and animation with painting, found footage,
digital collages and programming.
My videos reflect on the importance of images in the construction of the collective imagination, the
power of mass media and telecommunications, the marketing strategies and the brands and adverts
ubiquity, interactivity and hyperlinks as an illusion of the selection, the changes in the contemporary
culture with the electronic distribution, the fragmentation of the narrative discourse, the
information overload, the surveillance control and the loss of privacy.

Postdigital Road movie. Visual poem of Castilian landscapes where the mills and the bull, typical
elements of the Spanish roads, are transformed and distorted in the mind of a contemporary Don
Quixote.
“Fortune is arranging matters for us better than we could have shaped our desires ourselves, for
look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all of
whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our
fortunes; for this is righteous warfare, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off
the face of the earth”.

Efficient Story
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art

A camera slowly follows the figure of a woman walking, with continuous travelling. On both sides, in
an impossible space, hang framed pictures with recognizable images from the history of Western
painting, in which the great geniuses, men, have represented the figure of women over centuries.
Towards the end of her journey she begins to be reflected in these paintings, which are now mirrors
that return her image. Then she will pass through the painting and will now end up being the
spectator, to take a position, and create her own representative modes.
Efficient Story reflects on the power of the prevailing perspective and what this means in relation to
the viewer. The gaze controls everything. In the art world, as in other fields, that perspective, that
point of view, it is primarily masculine. Most representations of women that we find in museums
and galleries, are made by men. This changes with the gazes of women that question this "Almighty"
position and the perspective itself. Following the theory of gender and feminist studies, it is the
responsibility of the History of Art to review the system of representation. We need alternative
views, unheard spaces, to put into question that imposed look that manipulates us.

This video reflects on the importance of images in the construction of the collective imagination.
Both what is shown and what is hidden. From the Christian iconography to the saturation of images
of the current iconosphere and media manipulation.
Based on the paintings that covered the walls of Romanesque churches, use to indoctrinate the
faithful in a time when most people could not read, this video reflects on interactivity and the
apparent freedom we have today day to choose between various options.
New marketing strategies are based on a dynamic content that claims to give us a choice and that
apparently suits our needs, tastes, ideologies...
"Infinite" products, services, ideas ... are we offered to choose "freely" between them. But all these
possibilities are finite and have already been chosen in advance, thus defining a space and setting
limits.
7
The images projected on the walls of this "interactive church" have been preselected and stored in a
database. I created a program with Processing that distributes them randomly along the screen,
creating the illusion of over-abundance.
Hands, as a symbol of the capacity for action and participation, no longer serve to create, build,
fight... only to select between the many options that are offered to them. They all float on the
surface of the walls but don’t exit the building to see what's outside.

Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art

Year of production: 2015
Duration: 03’ 19”
Music: Mally Harpaz
Second part in the series “Zooming”. The first video, “Zoom out” is based on the painting by Caspar
David Friedrich “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog”. The camera moves away expanding the
boundaries of the original painting, diminishing the importance of man in the larger scale of life.
In “Zoom in” the camera moves through collages of animated paintings from the far reaches of the
universe to within the human mind. The greatness of introspection, inspiration, fantasy, dreams, the
subconscious, compared to the insignificance of everything else.
It is a reflection on Solipsism. The only thing one could be sure of is the existence of oneself. The
external world cannot be known and might not exist at all outside of the mind.

Zoom Out
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art
Technique: Video / Painting / Found footage / Animation / After Effects
Year of production: 2014
Duration: 03’ 06”
Music: Mally Harpaz
Video based on Caspar David Friedrich’s painting “The wanderer above the sea of fog”, one of the
icons of the XIX century Romanticism Painting, where a man stands upon a rocky precipice with his
back to the viewer.
The screen is a frame. It establishes the limits of what is inside and what is outside, what is shown
and what is hidden. In this video, the original painting has augmented its limits and expanded its
frame in height, width and depth. Around the original painting, the landscape has been
reconstructed digitally to cover the surface. The cracks of the original painting have been restored
and the colour balance altered.
“Zoom out” expresses the spirituality through the contemplation of nature and diminishes the
strength of man in the larger scale of life. Compared to contemporary iconography, based on
fragmented images and contradictory messages, “Zoom out” looks to nature at its finest, and makes
ordinary life small and insignificant compared to the grandeur of that nature.

Video based on a text by José Luis Brea: RAM_city (1000 screens), part of the book cultura_RAM.
Mutations of culture in the age of electronic distribution.
It is the transition from a city with “Read-only memory” (ROM) to a city with “Random-access
memory”: RAM_city. From a “file based memory” to a “network memory”. From a “storage
memory” to a “factory memory”.
In this new city there are no monuments or heroes to commemorate. The history of this city is not
made up of individual moments despotically imposed, ensuring their presence into the present.
Here, nothing crystallizes as a fixed memory. It is a continuous exchange, a permanent awakening.
Culture is not marked by tradition and inheritance rules, nor by the need to follow the same canon.
13
In RAM_city everything is disagreement, there is nothing to be concluded as real. The formation of
the imaginary is a continuos and open negotiation. Not between individuals and the state, but
among the units of work, performance and exchange.
In the words of Brea: “There is no other “sociality” than this one: occasion and leakage, drift and
flow, meeting and rapid dispersion– continuous Big Bang “.

Involuntary memories - Essence of the present
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art
Technique: Video / Animation / After Effects / Found footage
Year of production: 2014
Duration: 02’ 52”
Music: Scarlett Magna feat. Jessica Lauren
Video based on Marcel Proust’s famous madeleine’ passage, where he describes an incident in
which he was eating a tea soaked Madeleine cake. The smell and taste brought him back to a
childhood memory of eating tea soaked madeleines with his aunt. He then began to remember the
childhood home he used to live in and even the town itself. This becomes a theme throughout In
Search of Lost Time, with sensations reminding Proust of previous experiences. He dubbed these
“Involuntary memories”.
"But when from a long-distant past nothing subsists, after the people are dead, after the things are
broken and scattered, still, alone, more fragile, but with more vitality, more unsubstantial, more
persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls, ready to
remind us, waiting and hoping for their moment, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unfaltering,
in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection".
- Marcel Proust 15
Scientific experiments studying the different odours that evoked nostalgia have proved that people’s
odour associations vary depending on the time they live in.
In this video, the spectators immerse themselves in the cup of tea and fragments of “memories” are
revealed. The particularity of these images is that they come from television commercials advertising
perfumes. Images of attractive men and women, wearing expensive clothes and jewellery and
getting naked in front of flashing cameras, are used to sell artificial smells contained in a jar. The
essence of our present.

Starry Starry Night
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art
Technique: Video / Animation / Painting / After Effects
Year of production: 2014
Duration: 02’ 30”
Music: Mally Harpaz
An abstract painting in movement based on Vincent Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night. Defined by
lines and dots, it is a play of audiovisual rhythms, colours and shapes, light and darkness.
Van Gogh painted his Starry Night in June 1889. Unlike the earlier Starry Night Over the Rhone, the
new night scene was painted in daylight, from memory. He wrote in a letter to Émile Bernard:
"The imagination is certainly a faculty which we must develop and it alone can bring us to creation of
a more exalting and consoling nature ... A star-spangled sky, for instance, that’s a thing I would like
to try to do ... But how can I manage unless I make up my mind to work ... from imagination?".

Circadian Rhythms
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art

Year of production: 2013
Duration: 04’ 19”

A circadian rhythm is any biological process that displays an endogenous, entrainable oscillation of
about 24 hours. These rhythms are driven by a circadian clock and have been widely observed in
plants, animals, fungi, and cyanobacteria.
This video is a play of audiovisual rhythms that describes the passing of time in the life of a person
over a 24hr time lapse. In contrast to natural rhythms, here the rhythm is the typical imposed by our
post-industrial society, driven by the use of technology and mass production.
Instead of using the traditional way of showing / telling a story, this piece is an abstract painting in
time that defines surfaces and colours, lights and shadows.
It shows a different perspective for seeing and hearing daily routines. It explores the concepts of
rhythm and repetition, the cycles and the subjectivity of time.

Our relationships with our surroundings are mostly built upon images and fragmented messages
that we acquire through the media, rather than being built on our direct contact with the reality
itself.
Cinema, television, Internet, books, newspapers are our environment. They build the messages of
the social organism. They establish meaning in life. Brands and adverts ubiquity. “This is it. This is
what matters: The experience of a product”?!
This abstract painting is made with transmuted logos from some of the world’s leading brands.
Image overload, repetition, flashy colours, advertising hypnosis, contradiction, incomplete messages,
manipulation...
This is our vision of reality and the information that next generations will have about our present.

In post-industrial society we are witnessing information overload. This occurs when the amount of
input in a system exceeds its processing capacity. We have fairly limited cognitive processing
capacity, so when information overload occurs, it is likely that a reduction in decision quality will
occur.
Traditionally, text encoded human knowledge and memory, the printed word was linked to the art
of rhetoric. The popularity of hyperlink illustrates the continuing decline in the field of rhetoric and
the mistrust of contemporary culture in hierarchies. The two sources connected through a hyperlink
have equal weight, without any having priority over the other.
In the different mediums of expression (literature, cinema, visual arts...), we are assisting to the
fragmentation of the narrative discourse. We are questioning the traditional narrative resources
with the juxtaposition of images, texts, copy-paste collages and a schizophrenic nature.
23
In cyberspace, documents combine musical fragments with other sounds, texts, images...etc. It is
this combination of concrete elements that produces the abstract meaning.
Hypertext is a new kind of montage, a return to Eisenstein’s intellectual montage.

Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art)
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art

Duration: 02’ 21”

I created an application with Processing that links music and images. The program analyses the
sound (in this case the volume of the track) and interacts with it: here the volume of the different
sounds is translated into the size of the images. The images are fragments of something that I
painted before, and appear randomly along the screen. So every time you run the program, you will
see a different painting. This video is just one of the infinite variations of “interactive paintings” that
can be created with this program.
Although information from the world enters our heads via different sensory organs – the eyes and
ears in this instance – once they are in the brain they are intimately connected with each other.
Impressively, they are connected in non-random ways, so that some combinations of sound and
vision go together better than others. Like Kandinsky, I want my paintings to be ‘heard’. Where the
visual art is more like music, more abstract.
25
The title Entartete Kunst is the term adopted by the Nazi regime in Germany to describe all modern
art. While modern styles of art were prohibited, the Nazis promoted paintings and sculptures that
were traditional in manner and that exalted the “blood and soil” values of racial purity, militarism,
and obedience.

Found footage: Vivre sa vie (Jean-Luc Godard) and Buffalo ’66 (Vincent Gallo)
Homage to Godard, Gallo and of course Eisenstein and his montage theory.
By cutting and looping short segments of footage from both “dance scenes” of Vivre sa vie and
Buffalo ’66 (where the directors break the logic and continuity rules of narrative cinema), I created a
new meaning: a play of seduction and frivolous dance where individual dramas are hidden behind
loops and repetitions.
The soundtrack is another appropriation and “looped” interpretation of the French song Laisse
tomber les filles composed by Serge Gainsbourg.

Video made with more than 600 images of Holloway Road taken from Google Maps Street View.
This crime ridden high street in North London has been branded the most spied-upon road in Britain,
after it emerged that it is watched over by more than 100 closed circuit television cameras.
There are 102 CCTV cameras monitoring crime on the two-mile road, that runs from Archway to
Highbury Corner, as well as a further seven checking for speeding cars and vehicles straying into bus
lanes.
City, people, stop motion as substitute of the travelling. The value of the still images comes not from
the images themselves but from the editing and the new meaning they acquire.

With the power of mass media and telecommunications in the actual society we have lost our

Where is the frontier between reality and fiction?

Matar al padre
Single-channel video
Genre: Video Art
Technique: Video / drawings
Year of production: 2005
Duration: 04’ 28”
Music: Philip Glass
This video is based in the book by the Czech writer Franz Kafka Letter to my father. In this letter
Kafka tells his father the way in which he has been influenced by him for all his life. The father was a
very authoritarian man who wanted his son to follow in his footsteps and as a consequence did not
let him do what he wanted.
This feeling of being nothing that often dominates me (a feeling that is in another respect,
admittedly, also a noble and fruitful one) comes largely from your influence. What I would have
39
needed was a little encouragement, a little friendliness, a little keeping open of my road, instead of
which you blocked it for me, though of course with the good intention of making me take another
road. But I was not fit for that.
The video starts with a train that follows the track obediently. The same trains will appear at the end
of the video but this time it remains motionless. Other trains pass next to it while it remains
impassive. The voice-over talks then about the incapacity of talking.
The impossibility of getting on calmly together had one more result, actually a very natural one: I
lost the capacity to talk. I daresay I would not have become a very eloquent person in any case, but I
would, after all, have acquired the usual fluency of human language. But at a very early stage you
forbade me to speak. Your threat, “Not a word of contradiction!”
The first part of the video shows images of tracks, paths and roads very delineated and people
walking inside the limits very carefully. It talks about the rules that we all have to follow when we
live together with other people despite us often finding them nonsense. This fact makes us feel
oppressed, feel that we are losing our liberty. The images that follows shows things or people being
shut in somewhere or images which express anxiety and stress.
In the second part of the video we can see someone running and images inserted expressing the
idea of liberty. The rules and the barriers have been broken now and we can follow any way we want
and not just the way that we have been told to follow. It is the death of the father.
