Dear Chapter Leaders and Faculty Advisors,
During the month of September, the IHI Open School will release a new resource each week that
teaches and explores the importance of patient- and family-centered care.
Resource release dates:
 September 7: Video interview with Sally Sampson
 September 14: Patient experience photo campaign
 September 21: Patient story told by an IHI staff member
 September 28: New course (PFC 101: Dignity and Respect) and patient story activity
Lauren's List: An Interview with Sally Sampson
We're kicking things off with a video interview with Sally Sampson, a parent and passionate advocate
for patient- and family-centered care. Sampson discusses the legacy of "Lauren's List" - a list of basic
requests that her seven-year-old daughter Lauren taped to the door of her hospital room after being
ignored, or told "this won't hurt," too many times. She offers her opinion on why providers don't
always come across as empathetic, discusses positive interactions during many hospital visits with her
daughter, and shares some advice for future health care professionals.
The story of Lauren's List will also be featured in the newest Open School online course, PFC101:
Dignity and Respect, which will released on September 28th.

Always Events®: Raising Expectations for Patient Experience
September 8, 2011, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Eastern Time
Most of us are familiar with the National Quality Forum's list of Serious Reportable Events in health
care - often referred to as "Never Events." There's a wide consensus that everything from performing
surgery on the wrong patient or wrong site, to a medication error-induced death, to a physical
assault aren't only tragic and harmful, they are not supposed to happen. Period. It's a strong
statement about patient safety and what the system as a whole should not be willing to tolerate.
And, by extension, it's a call to action to do better and to take care of patients differently so that
terrible things do not occur.

WIHI is an exciting "talk show" program from IHI. It's free, it's timely, and it's
designed to help dedicated legions of health care improvers worldwide keep
up with some of the freshest and most robust thinking and strategies for
improving patient care. Listen to past WIHI broadcasts in the archive.
Costs of Care's 2011 Essay Contest
Do you have a story about a medical bill that was higher than you
expected it to be? Or a time when you wanted to know how much
a medical test or treatment might cost? How about a time you
figured out a way to deliver or receive high-value care?
Costs of Care, a nonprofit organization that empowers patients and health care workers with
information to curb harmful health care costs at a grassroots level, is holding an essay contest with
$4,000 in prizes for the best anecdotes illustrating the importance of cost-awareness in health care.
Deadline for submissions is November 15th.
View their flyer for more details or go to their website.
