My dear parishioners,
Late last Sunday night, our parish group of six ladies and I returned
after two weeks in Europe, first for World Youth Day and then four
nights in Rome to visit the Eternal City. Last week, I wrote to you
about the day of contradictions. Thursday and Friday of that week, we
attended catechesis sessions in the morning, followed by Mass in the
Tauron Center, filled each day with 18,000+ English speaking pilgrims. Thursday’s bishop catechesis was given by the Archbishop of
Manila, Philippines, Cardinal Luis Tagle and Friday’s was given by
Cardinal Dolan of New York. We had other speakers in those mornings. The one that stayed with me was given by a member of St.
Faustina’s community, Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. She gave one of
the best talks I ever heard on accepting one’s cross in life. She asked
everyone to hold a cross in their hands as she spoke, whether it was the
cross on your rosary, a cross around your neck, etc. At the end of her
talk, she asked us to open our hands. Most of us have the cross imprinted in our hands at that point. She invited us to turn the cross over
and look at the side without Jesus. That was the place for us and she
asked us with we were ready to be on the cross with Jesus.
Thursday afternoon, our young people returned to Blonia
Park to welcome our Holy Father, Pope Francis. During the celebration, there were cultural dances, catechesis on the lives of Polish saints
and much music. After catechesis on Friday, the diocese made a trip to
visit the Divine Mercy Shrine in Krakow. On the grounds there, we
prayed the Stations of the Cross together and went to the Basilica of
Divine Mercy. The crowds were so huge, we could not get in to visit
the tomb of St. Faustina and see one of the original images of Divine
Mercy. Afterwards we returned to prepare for the overnight vigil the
next day.
Early Saturday morning, we boarded our buses to take us as
far as they could before we had to hike to Campus Misericordia, where
the overnight prayer vigil with Pope Francis would take place. We
hiked for two and half hours in the blazing hot sun with our backpacks
and sleeping bags. Each registered group was allotted a certain section
in the field. Our group was relatively close to the altar but still needed
the help of a big screen television to see what was going on. We were
one of the first groups to arrive in our section, so we the choice of
where to camp out and we chose wisely. After we got settled, we
celebrated Mass for our contingent of the diocese in the field. The rest
of the day was spent meeting people from 184 nations present with an
estimated two million people present on Saturday. To give you an idea
how God works in a situation like that, a priest friend of mine from
Boston, who I studied Spanish with twenty years ago, just happened to
walk by where I was sitting. Two million people present and I bump
into a friend. The enthusiasm of our young people was contagious as
they traded souvenirs with pilgrims from the other nations. In the
evening, Pope Francis arrived for a holy hour of adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament. Then followed a praise and worship concert. Our
young ladies continued talking afterwards, playing cards and board
games, and then we went to sleep for the night in the open air.
The media that focuses so much on what is evil and bad in
the world, did not give us much press coverage. Two million people
gathered to praise our Lord Jesus Christ with our Holy Father, singing
joyfully and welcoming one another as brothers and sisters. Why
would they want to cover that? In a world that at times seems so crazy,
in Krakow, Poland, the youth of the Catholic Church gave a witness of
hope.

El domingo pasado, tarde por la noche, el nuestro grupo de seis señoritas y
yo regresamos después de dos semanas en Europa, primero para el Día
Mundial de la Juventud (WYD) y luego cuatro noches en Roma para visitar la Ciudad Eterna. La semana pasada, les escribí con referencia al día
de contradicciones. El jueves y el viernes de esa semana, por la mañana
asistimos a sesiones de catequesis, seguido por misa en el Centro Tauron,
lleno cada día con más de 18,000 peregrinos de habla inglés. La catequesis del jueves la dio el Arzobispo de Manila, Las Filipinas, el Cardenal
Luis Tagle y la del viernes la dio el Cardenal Dolan de Nueva York. Tuvimos también otros oradores esas mañanas. La que más se quedó conmigo
fue dada por un miembro de la comunidad de Sta. Faustina, Las hermanas
de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia. Ella dio una de las mejores pláticas
que he oído con referencia a aceptando la cruz que uno lleva en la vida.
Ella le pregunto a todos que aguantaran una cruz en sus manos mientras
que ella hablaba, no importaba si era una cruz en el rosario, una cruz alrededor de su cuello, etc. Al final de su plática, ella nos pidió que abriéramos nuestras manos. A este punto la mayoría de nosotros tenemos la cruz
impresa en nuestras manos. Nos invitó a que volteáramos la cruz y que
miráramos el lado sin Jesús. Ese era el lugar para nosotros y nos preguntó
si estábamos listos para estar con Jesús en la cruz.
El jueves por la tarde, nuestros jóvenes regresaron al Parque
Blonia para darle la bienvenida al Santísimo Padre, el Papa Francisco.
Durante la celebración, hubo bailes folclóricos, catequesis sobre la vida de
santos polacos y mucha música. Después de la catequesis el viernes, la
diócesis hizo un paseo para visitar al Santuario de la Divina Misericordia
en Krakow. En el terreno del Santuario hicimos la Vía Crucis juntos y
fuimos a la Basílica de la Divina Misericordia. La multitud era tan grande,
no pudimos ir a visitar la tumba de Sta. Faustina para así poder ver una de
las imágenes originales de la Divina Misericordia. Luego regresamos para
prepararnos para la vigilia nocturna del próximo día.
El sábado temprano por la mañana, nos montamos a nuestros
buses para que nos llevaran lo más lejos que pudieran antes de empezar
nuestra caminata al Campus Misericordia, donde la vigilia de oración
durante toda la noche con el Papa Francisco tendría lugar. Hicimos una
excursión de dos horas y media bajo el sol abrasador con nuestras mochilas y bolsas de dormir. A cada grupo registrado se les asignó una cierta
sección en la cancha. Nuestro grupo estaba relativamente cerca del altar,
pero todavía necesitábamos la ayuda de la pantalla grande de televisión
para ver lo que estaba pasando. Éramos uno de los primeros grupos en
llegar a nuestra sección, así que teníamos la opción de escoger a donde

años, paso por al frente de donde estaba sentado. Dos millones de personas y yo me encuentro con un amigo. El entusiasmo de nuestros jóvenes
fue contagioso mientras que intercambiaban recuerdos con peregrinos de
otros países. Por la noche, el Papa Francisco llegó para una hora santa de
veneración del Santísimo Sacramento. A continuación, seguido por un
concierto de alabanza y adoración. Después nuestras jóvenes continuaron
hablando, jugando naipe y juegos de mesa, y luego nos acostamos a dormir
al aire libre.

Did you know?
The bells of St. Mary’s have their own story to tell. The set
of 3 bells purchased from Most Holy Trinity Parish weighing
714, 1030 and 1814 pounds respectively were housed in the
200-foot steeple of the 1888 Church; this was a familiar landmark to thousands of commuters on the Long Island Railroad, in trolleys and later in cars and buses along Queens
Boulevard. These bells sounded on the hour and half hour
throughout the valley of Winfield. A larger church was
needed to accommodate the congregation for Sunday Mass:
the school auditorium had been used to supplement the
Church. On May 29, 1954, ground was broken in the large
empty lot east of the school building (facing 72nd Street).
Msgr. Peter Fox, the 9th pastor, and Bishop Brian McEntegart
dedicated the large cathedral-like structure to the service of
God and the people of St. Mary’s on June 29, 1958. The 3
bells from the old steeple were mounted in this new Church
and blessed on November 3rd, 1966. Today, these bells serve
as a symbol of the continuation of the life of St. Mary’s Parish.

Las campanas de María Auxiliadora tienen su propia historia
que contar. El juego de 3 campanas las cuales se compraron
de la Parroquia Santísima Trinidad respectivamente pesando
714, 1030 y 1814 libras se alojaron en el campanario de la
iglesia de 1888 el cual medía 200 pies; este era un punto de
referencia familiar a miles de personas que viajaban en el
Long Island Railroad, en tranvías y más adelante en carros y
buses por Queens Boulevard. Estas campanas sonaban en la
hora y en la media hora por todo el valle de Winfield. Una
iglesia más grande se necesitaba para acomodar a la congregación para la misa dominical: la sala comunal del colegio
se había usado para suplementar la iglesia. El 29 de mayo de
1954, alistaron la tierra en el lote grade desocupado al oriente
del edificio del colegio (al frente a la calle 72). El monseñor
Peter Fox, el noveno párroco, y el Obispo McEntegart dedicaron la estructura grande estilo catedral al servicio de Dios y
