No corazón mesmo do Golfo Ártabro…
Presta atención, unha voz xorde dende o máis fondo da ría. Voz de auga,
ronca e eterna, morna e suave, mergullada na seguridade dos tempos; na
protección dos ancestros que foron e máis dos que serán. Lar infindo de sorriso
sempre á espreita, acolle ao que chega de ningures e ven para quedar.
Un mundo chamado Fene, niño de todos aqueles que o buscan, mesmo dos que
o atoparon sen máis; camiñantes aventurados e descoñecidos que apousaron,
apousan e apousarán.
Fene é terra de paso onde un remata por ficar e muda propio; as raíces tornan
mestas e fortes de seguida.
No corazón mesmo do Golfo Ártabro, o último reduto para os fillos do vento.
Por ser, até o “Quijote” puido ter sido de Fene. E non, non é soberbia. Disque
no lugar do Pazo, parroquia de Barallobre, houbo nun tempo pasado un home,
fidalgo emparentado coa casa de Lemos, que de tanto ler romances cabaleirescos
rematouporseconsiderarherdeirolexítimodosbuscadoresdoSantoGraal,emesmo
mudou o seu nome polo de Lanzarote de Lago.
Terra soñada e de soñadores.
Sempre fomos en Fene algo novelescos, e máis dramáticos; pero con sentido
do humor, que é o máis importante.
Tamén tivemos noutrora un poeta que, anque naceu noutra banda da ría,
rematou por ser fenés. El dicía que aquí o sol é gaiteiro. Algo festeiros sí que
somos, as cousas como son; mais con sentido do humor, que nunca falte.
No corazón mesmo do Golfo Ártabro, lume de historia e maxia agochado á
simple vista dos que queiran ou saiban mirar. Quence e alumea as conciencias,
mantén viva a chama do pasado nas voces dos máis vellos...
E na ribeira do Barallobre vivo e latexante, no seu cine Adriano e no seu
castro invisible; no Sillobre que cala segredos marabillosos de horas non
tan antigas; no Limodre cheo de tempos indefinidos; no Maniños que
medra discreta pero imparablemente; no Fene que quere ser cidade e non
perde a ledicia do pobo; no San Valentín fermoso contra todo pronóstico; no
Magalofes bravío e verde; no Perlío de pedra que nunca esvaece.
No corazón do Golfo Ártabro hai unha terra para botar áncoras.
Terra onde medrar e ser máis fortes, fillos dos fillos e máis dos fillos. Terra á
que sempre voltan os que marcharon e chegan incesantes aires novos. Terra
labrega e mariña, obreira e loitadora, doce e salgada; pequeno país que navega
a dúas augas.
No corazón mesmo do Golfo Ártabro, un mundo chamado Fene, un pobo
chamado fogar.

El ayuntamiento de Fene se
sitúa en la provincia de A Coruña,
más concretamente en la comarca
de Ferrolterra, que a su vez forma
parte del gran conjunto comarcal
del Golfo Ártabro junto con Las
Marinas y A Coruña, siendo uno de
los ayuntamientos más poblados e
influyentes de la misma.
The town council of Fene is
situated in the Province of A Coruña,
more precisely in the region of
Ferrolterra, which also forms part
of the great regional set of the Gulf
Artabro together with The Sea-Coast
and A Coruña, being one the most
populated and influential town
councils of the this area.
Está formado por ocho parroquias (Fene, Perlío, Sillobre, Limodre, Barallobre, Maniños, San Valentín y Magalofes) y limita con los
ayuntamientos de Neda, Cabañas,
La Capela, Ares, Mugardos y la Ría
de Ferrol.
It is formed by eight parishes

El tipo de relieve de Fene está
determinado por el contraste litológico existente, pudiéndose apreciar
suaves colinas hacia el oeste (dirección a Ares y Mugardos), alturas más
considerables (dirección al interior)
en la zona de Marraxón con una
altitud máxima de 359 m (Couto do
Rei) y, ya en la frontera con Neda,
aparece una gran quebrada en el Río
Belelle donde se formó una cascada
de 45 metros de salto, siendo uno de
los paisajes más bonitos del ayuntamiento.
The type of relief in Fene
is determined by the contrast
lithological existing, where it is
possible to appreciate soft hills
towards the west (in the direction
of Ares and Mugardos), a few hills
a little higher towards the interior in
Marraxón, with a maximum altitude
of 359 metres (Couto do Rei) and on
the border with Neda, there appears
a great gully of the river Belelle
where a waterfall of 45 m was
formed, which is one of the nicest
landscapes of the town council.

Pocos son los datos históricos que
nos quedaron en Fene, pero su existencia a lo largo de los tiempos queda
patente con los diferentes restos históricos encontrados (Sepulcro Megalítico del Campo del Arca, Petroglifo de
Marraxón...), diversos topónimos de
herencia ártabra (Barallobre, Limodre,
...), restos de un asentamiento romano
en un ayuntamiento colindante (Mugardos) y ya, en la Edad Media, el Monasterio de San Xoán de Xubia recibió
por donación tierras de esta zona. Pero
los primeros datos escritos con los que
contamos fechan del año 1444 cuando Fene aparece mencionado en una
escritura y en el año 1100 aparecen
los nombres de “Xoan”, párroco de
Sillobre, y Ordoño de Fene por motivo
de un pleito entre Santiago y Mondoñedo por la posesión del Arciprestado
de Betanzos.
There is few historical information left
in Fene, but its existence throughout the times
remains clear with the different historical
remains found (mámoa from Campo da Arca
(megalithic tomb), petroglyph of Marraxón…),

viene de mucho
más lejos y ligada
a dos hechos principales: la instalación de la factoría
naval de Astano
(actualmente Navantia Fene) en
Perlío en 1941 y la
proximidad a la ciudad de Ferrol, que
es la cabecera de la comarca. Fene y
Ferrol, dos ayuntamientos separados
por una ría, la de Ferrol, y unidos
desde finales de los años sesenta por
un puente, el puente de Las Pías, que
hizo historia cuando el martes, 13 de
enero de 1998, el petrolero Discovery
Enterprice arrastrado por un viento de
130 km/h se adentró en la ría y destrozó el puente de Las Pías dejando a
la comarca sin su principal vía de comunicación.
However, the importance and
development of Fene town council comes
from farther afield and tied to two main facts:
the setting up of the naval factory, Astano
(nowadays Navantia Fene) in Perlío in 1941
and the proximity to the town of Ferrol which
is administrative centre of the region. Fene
and Ferrol, two town councils separated by the
estuary of Ferrol, and joined since the end of
the Sixties by a bridge, the bridge of Las Pías,
which made history when on Tuesday, the
13th of January 1998, the oil tanker Discovery
Enterprise dragged by a wind of 130 km/h,
entered in the estuary and destroyed it, leaving
the region without its main road link.

Astano’s shipyard (nowadays,
Navantia Fene) is placed in the
estuary of Ferrol, in the parish of
Perlío, in Fene.
ASTANO
El astillero Astano (hoy Navantia
Fene) está situado en la Ría de Ferrol,
en la parroquia de Perlío en Fene.
Se fundó en 1941 y en un principio se dedicó a la construcción de
pequeños buques pesqueros de madera. En 1944 pasa a ser una Sociedad Anónima, aumenta su capital, y
con tal motivo los barcos aumentan
sus dimensdiones, por lo que se amplían las instalaciones del astillero.
A medida que pasan los años,
el número de trabajadores va en aumento, pero es en el año 1963 el que
marca un punto de inflexión. En este
año comienza un moderno desarrollo de Astano,consiguiendo convertirse en uno de los principales astilleros del mundo,
especializándose en la
construcción de petroleros
de 300.000 toneladas.
It was founded in 1941 and
at first it was dedicated to the
construction of small wooden
fishing boats. In 1944 it turned
into a Public Limited Company.
It increased its capital, and for
this reason, the ships increased
their dimensions, due to this the
facilities of the shipyard were
extended.
As the years went by, the
number of workers increased, but
it is the year 1963, which marks
the point of inflexion. In this year
Astano’s modern development
began, which managed to turn
it into one of the main shipyards
in the world, specializing in the
construction of oil tankers of
300.000 tons. In 1975 it was
included in the corporate group of
the National Institute of Industry.

Los años ochenta supusieron
una importante recesión en el
sector, provocado esencialmente
por la reconversión del sector
naval (1984), hecho del que Astano ya nunca se recuperó por
completo.

Actualmente Astano desapareció como tal y entró a formar
parte del grupo Navantia, que es
el noveno grupo de construcción
naval del mundo y el segundo de
Europa, siendo el resultado de la
fusión de los astilleros españoles
públicos civíles de “Astilleros Españoles” (Cádiz, Juliana, Manises, Astano, Puerto Real, Sestao y
Sevilla) y militares de Bazán (Ferrol, Cartagena y San Fernando).
Nowadays,Astano disappeared
as such and began to form part of
the group Navantia, which is the
ninth group of naval construction in
the world and the second in Europe,
it is the result of the merger of the
Spanish public and civil shipyards
of “Spanish Shipyards” (Cádiz,
Juliana, Manises, Astano, Puerto
Real, Sestao and Sevilla) and the
military of Bazán (Ferrol, Cartagena
and San Fernando).

Fene es un ayuntamiento rico en restos
arqueológicos, aunque
muchos de ellos fueron
destruidos o afectados
por construcciones y otras
actividades; por lo que son
de interés fundamental
para expertos.
Aún así, a quien le interese observar las pisadas
de estos restos, del megalítico se conservan los sepulcros del Campo
da Arca en Barallobre y en el Monte de
Marraxón de Sillobre, donde además se
puede disfrutar de una magnífica paisaje
que comprende las tierras más bajas del
ayuntamiento, la Ría de Ferrol y el resto de
la comarca de Ferrolterra. Cerca de los sepulcros de Marraxón y coincidiendo con el
punto más alto del ayuntamiento, el Couto
do Rei (356 m), se encuentra el petroglifo
de Marraxón y no muy lejos la Pena do
Picoto, un conjunto de piedras graníticas
con inscripciones.
En el límite de los ayuntamientos
de Fene y Cabañas está el Marco de San
Lourenzo, un menhir de 50 cm de altura
situado en la antigua ermita del santo y
a la que, tradicionalmente, se le atribuyen
poderes curativos.
La intensa ocupación humana del
ayuntamiento se demuestra desde la
antiguedad con diversos asentamientos
castrenses que existieron, pero algunos de
ellos fueron destruídos y otros permanecen enterrados. Son los siguientes: Castro
de Orra (Sillobre), Las Pías (Fene), Cardoeiro (Perlío), Pena do Castro (Barallobre),
Prismos (Limodre), As Escadas (Maniños)
y As Modias (Magalofes).
Un lugar que no se puede dejar de
visitar es la zona de las riberas en Sillobre,
allí se puede entrar en contacto directo con
la historia y la naturaleza viva, disfrutando
Fene is a rich town council in
archeological remains, though many
of them were destroyed or affected by
constructions and other activities; so they
are of fundamental interest for experts.
Nonetheless, anyone interested in
having a look at these megalithic remains,
can visit “As Mámoas do Campo da Arca”
in Barallobre and “O Monte de Marraxón”,
in Sillobre where in addition, it is possible
to enjoy a magnificent landscape which
includes the lowlands of the town council,
the estuary of Ferrol and the rest of
Ferrolterra’s region. Near the “Mámoas of
Marraxón” coinciding with the highest point
of the town council, “O Couto do Rei” (356
m), is the petroglyph of Marraxón and not
very far “A Pena do Picoto”, a set of stones
with inscriptions.
In the limit of Fene’s town council and
Cabanas is the “Marco de San Lorenzo”, a
megalith of 50 cm high placed in the former
chapel of the saint and it is thought that it
has curative powers.
The intense human occupation of
the town council is demonstrated from
the remains of several ancient celtic
settlements that existed, but some of them
were destroyed and others remain buried.
They are the following ones: Castro da Orra
(Sillobre), As Pías (Fene), Cardoeiro (Perlío),
Pena do Castro (Barallobre), Prismos
(Limodre), As Escadas (Maniños) and As
Modias (Magalofes).

de las aguas cristalinas y los bosques del
Río Belelle, y el llamado Ponte das Ribeiras
que probablemente pertenezca a la época
medieval, formando un hermoso conjunto
compuesto de un molino, un lavadero y un
pequeño embalse.
Se puede hacer una ruta por el ayuntamiento conociendo el barroco en sus
iglesias parroquiales; que siguen conservando en su fachada principal algunas de
las características de este arte.
Y coincidiendo a finales de la primera
mitad del siglo XX, se construye en Limodre la iglesia de San Xosé, que siendo de
estilo neogótico conserva algunos detalles
con un hondo carácter que hace del edificio una muestra más clara del estilo del
ayuntamiento.
En los atrios de las iglesias, en ermitas, cementerios y algunas encrucijadas se
conservan muchos más cruceros existentes
en el ayuntamiento y que son una muestra
de la iconografía religiosa tradicional más
popular de Galicia.

de la Palma, en

Barallobre se encuentra el Monumento ao Camiñante Descoñecido (Caminante

visit is the area on the banks
of the estuary in Sillobre.
There, it is possible to enter
in direct contact with history
and the living nature, enjoying
the crystal clear waters and
the forest of the river Belelle,
and the so called “Ponte das
Ribeiras” (Ribeiras’s Bridge)
which probably belonged to
the Middle Ages forming a
beautiful set with a water
mill, a laundry and a small dam.
It is also possible to do a route
around the town council to admire the
baroque parochial churches, which continue
preserving in their main facade some of the
characteristics of this art.
At the end of first half of the 20th
Century, San Xose’s church was built in
Limodre, being of Neogothic Style and
preserving some details with a deep
character which makes the building a clearer
sample of the style of the town council
In the atrium of the churches, in
chapels, graveyards and some crossroads
remain many of existing stone crossing
in the town council and that are a sample
of the most popular religious traditional
iconography of Galicia.
Passing along “La carretera de La
Palma” in Barallobre’s parish, there is the
“Monumento ao Camiñante Descoñecido”
(Unknown Traveller), one of the most
important symbolic
elements of the
town council. It is
composed of a small
temple surrounded
with a several
benches in which are
written the names
of the distinguished
people from the
Galician culture;

importantes elementos simbólicos
del ayuntamiento.
Está compuesto por
un pequeño templo
rodeado por una
serie de bancos
que llevan escritos
los nombres de las
personas destacadas de la cultura
gallega, además de contar con una biblioteca al aire libre. Fue inaugurado en el año
1934 junto con la estación del ferrocarril
de Barallobre y reinaugurado en su situación habitual en 1984. En esta parroquia
se puede disfrutar también del Parque de
Educación Viaria.

Otro elemento simbólico de muy reciente creación fue el Monumento al Payaso, obra de Francisco Xosé Pérez Porto
que fue construído con las aportaciones
del pueblo. Este monumento se encuentra
en el Parque Castelao en Fene, que supone
una gran área de juego para los niños y
niñas, habitantes del ayuntamiento y visitantes, al igual que el Parque Lineal del
Río Cádavo (con el Monumento al 25 de
Julio), el Paseo Marítimo de San Valentín
(con el Monumento a la Memoria), el
Paseo Marítimo Bieito Cupeiro y muchos
otros parques y plazas a lo largo de todo
el ayuntamiento de Fene.
Cerca del Parque Castelao, en la
Avenida Naturais de Fene, merece la pena
disfrutar del animado ambiente de sus terrazas y cafeterías.
Otros lugares de interés del
ayuntamiento son
las edificaciones
que responden a
la “arquitectura
indiana” y que son
el resultado de la
vuelta a estas tierras de emigrantes
de finales del siglo
Another symbolic element of very
recent creation was the Monument to the
Clown, work of Xosé Pérez Porto, which
was made from the contributions of the
people. It was made in order to defend
the image of this profession, leaving a
reminder to the tenderness and laughter in
the town council. This monument is in “El
Parque Castelao” (The Park Castelao) in
Fene, which gives a great area for playing
to the children and inhabitants of the town
council and its visitors, as El “Parque Lineal
del Río Cádavo” (The Lineal Park of the river
Cádavo) with “El Monumento al 25 de Julio”
(The Monument to 25th July); “El Paseo
Marítimo de San Valentín” (The promenade
in San Valentín), with “El Monumento a la
Memoria” (Monument to The Memory);
“El Paseo Marítimo Bieito Cupeiro” (The
promenade Bieito Cupeiro) and many other
parks and squares throughout the whole of
Fene’s town council.
Near “El Parque Castelao” (Park
Castelao), in “La Avenida Naturales” (The
Avenue Naturales)
of Fene, there is an
area of terraces and
cafes with a lively
atmosphere.
Other interesting
places in the town
council are the
buildings related to the
Indian architectures

XIX y comienzos del XX, ejemplos
de esto son: la Escuela Concepción
Arenal de Fene, Fillos de Limodre en
Limodre y Curros Enríquez en Maniños; varios cines y salones de baile
como el Cardoeiro en Maniños, el
Cine Adriano en Barallobre, además
de viviendas particulares como la
Casa de Antonio Porto (Perlío), la
Casa de la Maleta (Barallobre), la
Casa de Manuel Martínez (Barallobre) y la Gasa Garabana (Limodre)
En el ayuntamiento se conserva un
escudo heráldico perteneciente a la importante familia de los Andrade que se
encuentra en el actual instituto de Formación Profesional de Barallobre y otras
construcciones de arquitectura popular
gallega como los hórreos y varios molinos;
muestra de ello, son los 53 que funcionan
de forma simultánea en el ayuntamiento
desde mediados del siglo XVIII con el objetivo de abastecer a la ciudad de Ferrol.
Un buen ejemplo es el recientemente restaurado Muiño do Redondo (Molino del
Redondo) en Magalofes.
En Fene se pueden admirar dos edificios muy singulares; el primero de ellos es
la Antigua Casa del Ayuntamiento que hoy
en día cumple funciones de juzgado y que
pertence al estilo regionalista; también la
actual Casa del Ayuntamiento, que es un
edificio moderno construído en 1980 por
Alberto Campo Baeza; es de estilo racio-

council since the middle of the 18th
century to supply the town of Ferrol.

In addition, in Fene two very

take place in Fene.

La cultura está muy presente en el

Fene cuenta con dos museos verdaderamente exclusivos, que son el Museo del
Humor y el Museo de Astano.
Fene has two really exclusive
museums, which are “El Museo del Humor”
(The Museum of the Humor) and “El Museo
de Astano” (Astano’s Museum).
El Museo del Humor. Como su nombre
propio indica es un museo para reir, donde
encontrarás obras de importantes humoristas a nivel nacional e internacional que tratan los temas de mayor actualidad en clave
de humor, ya sea gráfica o literaria. Es de los
únicos de su género en España, y se encuentra en la Casa de la Cultura.
El museo organiza todos los años las
Jornadas del Humor, y convoca los premios
Curuxa del Humor, entre otras actividades.
Se puede visitar de forma gratuíta todos los días laborables en horario de tarde, y
los martes y jueves también de mañana.
El Museo de Astano. Está en las instalaciones del astillero, y mediante fotografías, maquetas y otros medios se puede ver
la evolución de la historia del astillero, sus
actividades, proyectos... lo que hace entender a los visitantes la importancia naval que
tiene y tuvo para nuestro ayuntamiento.

The Museum
of the Humor. As its
name indicates, is a
museum dedicated
to laughter. Here you
will find the works of
important national
and international
humorist that treat
the topics of main
current importance
in key of graphical
or literary humor.
It is the only one
of its type in Spain, and it can be found in
“La Casa de la Cultura” (The House of the
Culture).
The museum organizes the Day of
the Humor every year, and celebrates the
Prizes “Curuxa” of the humor, among other
activities.
The museum can be visited free of
charge all the working days in schedule of
evening, and on Tuesdays and Thursday also
in the mornings.
Astano’s Museum. It is in the
installations of the shipyard, and with
photography, scale models and other means,
we can see the evolution of the history of
the shipyard, its activities, projects… Which
permits the visitors to understand the naval
importance that it had and has for our town
council.

A pesar de la gran densidad
de población del ayuntamiento,
aún se pueden encontrar lugares
de gran belleza natural y donde
se pueden realizar gran variedad
de deportes, tanto de contacto
con la naturaleza como otros organizados en las diferentes instalaciones del ayuntamiento.
La Ría de Ferrol y los montes
colindantes configuran un emplazamiento de gran belleza natural
y paisajística. Para los aficionados a realizar rutas de senderismo o bicicleta de montaña, una
buena parte de las parroquias de
Sillobre y Magalofes
están cubiertas por
bosques de pino y eucaliptos transitables
por pequeñas pistas
ideales para realizar
estos deportes. Otro
tanto podemos decir
de las riberas del Río
Va, en Maniños.

Sillobre destaca el conjunto montañoso de
Marraxón que ocupa
casi todo el extremo
este del Concello de Fene y es
donde se encuentra el punto más
elevado a 359 metros de altitud
llamado “Coto del Rey”
Una muestra de naturaleza
viva es el Río Belelle. Es muy interesante un paseo por su ribera
o una visita a la cascada que se
formó entre Fene y Neda y que
cuenta con 45 metros de salto
formando un bellísimo paisaje.
En este río se practica la pesca
deportiva.
From Sillobre and Magalofes
the panoramic view of Fene,
the estuary of Ferrol and the
region is excellent. In Sillobre
the mountains set of Marraxón is
important. That occupies almost
all the extreme East of the town
council of Fene and is where one
finds the highest point which
rises up to 359 m of altitude
called “Coto do Rey”.
A sample of living nature
is the River Belelle. It is very
interesting to walk along its
banks or to visit the waterfall
that was formed between Fene
and Neda and that has 45 m,
comprising the most beautiful
landscape. Sports fishing is
practiced in this river.

washed by the estuary of Ares,
there are four small beaches of
fine sand and calm waters. They

El carnaval en Fene adquirió una gran importancia en los últimos años siendo su día grande el
Miércoles de Ceniza, con el desfile de comparsas
por el ayuntamiento y la actuación de las mismas,
la “queima do entroido” (quema del carnaval) y
fuegos artificiales.
The carnival in Fene has acquired a great
importance in the last years its big day being the
“miércoles de Ceniza” (Ash Wednesday) with the
parade of carnival groups throught the town council
and the performance of the same ones, “queima do
entroido” and fireworks.
Desde 1933 se viene celebrando con gran
tradición la Romería del Pote, organizada por la
Sociedad “O Pote de Maniños” y que suele coincidir con el último domingo de agosto; semanas
antes de su celebración ya se montan las primeras
cabañas de tojos y ramas, previniendo tener todo
listo y lleno de comida y
bebida para el día grande
de la fiesta, en el que hay

juegos populares, degustación y actuaciones de diferentes grupos folclóricos.

civil, con numerosas viviendas “indianas” concentradas sobre todo en las parroquias de Maniños,
Barallobre, y Limodre, y entre las que sobresale la
Casa de la Maleta (Barallobre) construída en 1921
por el Adriano (Antonio Fernández) en Barallobre,
que hizo una estatua en lo más alto de la casa
en la que se ve un hombre, con una maleta en la
mano, mirando hacia la boca de la ría.
Y si el tiempo lo permite, antes de marchar,
darse un baño en las playas de la ría de Ares: Coído, Río Sandeo y Almieiras.
