A SIGNIFICANT DAY
“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise
like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire
house in which they were” (Acts 2:2). The Holy
Spirit’s arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled
by a rush of wind. We all know what it’s like when
our windows are open just as a summer storm rises
up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house
plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind
disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of
the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost,
can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable
and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost.
We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow away
any complacency or malaise that has settled into our
faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive
the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power
to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is
no less true for us.

Dear Parishioners,
I came across this poem “Pentecost” by William Blake (1757-1827) in Africa a mission magazine
of the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society:
Unless the eye catch fire ,
The God will not be seen.
Unless the ear catch fire,
The God will not be heard.
Unless the tongue catch fire,
The God will not be named.
Unless the heart catch fire,
The God will not be loved.
Unless the mind catch fire,
The God will not be known.
It is my prayer and hope that the Holy Spirit, who came to Mary and the apostles on that first
Pentecost as a tongue of fire, will inflame our minds and hearts and make us ardent yet gentle servants
of the gospel.
All are invited to our May crowning on this Wednesday at 10:30 am in church.
This devotion will be sponsored by Holy Angels Catholic Academy.
Next Sunday, May 31, we will have a mass in Spanish at 1:00 pm which will conclude our
celebration of the First Holy Communion of the youngsters of our parish. Again, I offer our
congratulations to the children, their parents, catechists and all the extended families.
