John Taverner (c. 1490–1545) Magnificat for five voices This edition prepared for The Tallis Scholars Gimell Notes Source Cambridge, University Library, Peterhouse MSS 471–4 (c. 1540) The music is copied using low clefs in the source and is here transposed up a perfect fourth: in addition, the Tenor 2 part is missing in its entirety, and has been supplied by the editor. Like most early Tudor Magnificats, Taverner’s setting is based on a faburden, in this case that to the second tone, first ending. The surviving voices make clear allusions to it at various points, and it fits in the Tenor 2 part virtually unadorned at ‘Fecit potentiam’.
