Happier Employees are
More Productive and Innovative
The following tips may help you get ideas about how to create a positive work
environment. These tips may also provide you an extra boost of a well-deserved
dose of positivity.
Did you know that only about 25 percent
of job success can be predicted by the
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)? It’s true, but
what about the remaining 75 percent?
Experts suggest that the main factor in
job success can be predicted by optimism
levels, social support and the ability to
view stress as a challenge, rather than
an obstacle.
A positive attitude also plays a major
role when it comes to our health and
happiness. What we believe impacts our
feelings, and in turn, our feelings impact
our body and brain chemistry. Changing
our minds can help us change our bodies.
During positive mental states our brain
releases an important chemical called
Dopamine.
Dopamine is related to –
J Making you feel happy
J Turning on the learning centers
in the brain
J A stronger immune system
J Less stress
J Lower levels of stress hormone
(cortisol)
J Mental well-being
What does this mean in personal and professional lives? A positive brain performs
better than a negative brain. This is known as the happiness advantage.
It can have a big impact on both our personal and work lives.
Positivity boosts –
J Intelligence
J Creativity
J Energy levels
J Personal and work performance
The happiness advantage can help –
J Increase job satisfaction
J Achieve better work-life balance
J Foster a healthy mind and body
J Improve stress management
J Maintain happiness
Positivity at Work
Wouldn’t you agree that happier employees are more productive, more innovative and create a better working
environment? This could be a reality! The following points can be integrated into workplace wellness programs.
Optimism –
Education –
Challenges –
An example of optimism would be
“gain framing” vs. “loss framing.”
Focus on a “glass-full” approach
when introducing new ideas,
policies, procedures or activities to
employees.
This is a big one! Provide
employees with meaningful,
current and accurate information.
Often times we may be teaching
people new things or new ways of
doing old things. Making changes
that improve health and happiness
begins with education.
Here’s a fun way to create
excitement and keep people
engaged. Friendly competition
can really boost morale and
enthusiasm. Whether individual
or group challenges, creative
campaigns and challenges can
spark interest in needed
interventions or important
changes.
Encouragement –
Make wellness programming
as easy to access as possible.
Consider using incentives to help
engage employees.
Support –
It’s important that employees feel
comfortable and safe. Implementing
supportive policies and providing
help for those who may need it is
essential. People aren’t happy if
they don’t feel safe.
Autonomy –
An important factor in building
long-term participation and
achieving meaningful success
is automomy. Let participants
have a voice. People are more
optimistic and positive if they
know they are being listened to
and they know they can make a
difference. Employees enrolled in
wellness programs need to make
the program their own in order to
achieve lasting, long-term success.
And lastly, Fun!
Be creative, be exciting! Do
everything possible to ensure
participation and employee
satisfaction. This improves the
positivity and happiness of the
workforce and also increases the
likelihood that people will stick
with the program in the future.
People who practice positivity are more apt to build new skills and social connections, acquire new knowledge
and reach for bigger goals. Overtime, this can create a rising spiral of effectiveness and success.

With Spring coming soon, people may be worried about the Zika virus. It’s good to know that it is passed on to humans by
two kinds of mosquitoes that have not been found in Wisconsin. However, if you have employees that are planning to travel
to places where these mosquitoes live, such as areas in Central and South America or the Caribbean, please have them
review the information from the Wisconsin Health Department or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention –
