NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
AUGUST 7, 2005
PRESENCE
It is difficult to be truly present to another. We
speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even
when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead,
or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at
our best when we truly show up. We are most fully
ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of
us: creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these
instances we are wholly ourselves and wholly outside
ourselves.
Elijah knew this kind of engagement. He was one
of God’s great prophets. In today’s first reading, he
follows God’s command to journey to that most holy
place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah
encounters God.
As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the
presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the sea
and the winds are stunned into silent reverence.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The LORD said to Elijah: “Stand on the
mountain; the LORD will be passing by”
(1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a).
Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us
your salvation (Psalm 85).
Second Reading — To the Israelites belong the
covenants, the law, and the patriarchs; and from them
comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5).
Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples
were terrified. But at once Jesus said to them, “Take
heart, it is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:22-33).
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER & PRAISE CHARISMATIC
PRAYER GROUP: This coming Friday, August 12, we’ll
be back again at 7:00 p.m. in Room 3 to resume our
reverent worship of our almighty God. I find that after
traveling, enjoying togetherness with family and friends
(many of them non-catholic), I am yearning to be with my
charismatic brothers and sisters to offer up a sacrifice
of praise (Hebrews 13:15) and to thank God for being
Who He Is and for His many blessings. Come join us
and see what the Holy Spirit has in store for us. He
is a God of surprises! We also need you to help us pray
for each other, our Pastor, priests, staff, and the whole
parish. Stay for fellowship and refreshments, and don’t
forget to BYOB! (Bring Your Own Bible) For more information, please call Maggi at 295-8074.

Decimonoveno Domingo Del Tiempo Ordinario
Agosto 7, 2005
PRESENCIA
Es difícil estar realmente presente ante otros.
Hablamos de aparecernos o dar signo de presencia.
Aun cuando estamos allí, estamos distraídos.
pensamos en lo que viene, o revisitamos un pasado
no resuelto. Sin embargo, somos lo mejor que
podemos ser cuando estamos realmente presentes.
Somos nuestro más completo ser cuando estamos
absorbidos en algo digno de nosotros: trabajo
creativo, buena conversación, oración. En estas
ocasiones somos totalmente nosotros mismos y

—Blas Pascal
