7.4 Verbs like GUSTAR

You have already learned to express preferences
with the verb GUSTAR.
(English equivalent)
I like that shampoo.
Me gusta ese champú. (Literal translation)
That shampoo is pleasing to me.
(English equivalent)
Did you like the classes?
¿Te gustaron las clases?
(Literal translation)
Were the classes pleasing to
you?
The literal translation of GUSTAR is pleasing
to someone , which means it requires an
INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN!

NOTICE...what is the SUBJECT of the sentence?
(SUBJECT)
Me gusta ese champú.
(SUBJECT)
That shampoo is pleasing to me.
Keep in mind, the SUBJECT may come at the
END of the sentence in Spanish!
Typically, you will use the 3rd person singular/
plural form of the verb.

(singular subject)

(plural subject)
las vacaciones

When the object being discussed is singular, use
the 3rd person singular.
When the objects being discussed are plural,
use the 3rd person plural.
When talking about what someone does/does
not like TO DO, always use the 3rd person
singular ending.
Me gusta estudiar español.
Me gusta estudiar y hablar español.
NOTICE! A singular ending is still used even
though there are TWO infinitives that
follow!
To show emphasis or to clarify who is pleased/
bored, etc, you can use “A + noun/pronoun”
A mí me gustan las películas románticas.
A Miguel le aburre el programa.
Other verbs in Spanish require an INDIRECT
OBJECT PRONOUN (like gustar).
Le aburre (aburrir) el libro.
¡Nos encanta (encantar) el chocolate!
Le falta (faltar) dinero.
FALTAR expresses what is missing or needed:
Me falta un lápiz.
Me fascina (fascinar) la pregunta.
Me importa (importar)
estudiar la gramática.
Le interesa (interesar) el libro
Le molesta (molestar) su amigo.
Me queda (quedar) bien el vestido.
Pero, no me quedan bien los zapatos.
Nos queda (quedar) un dólar y unas monedas.
QUEDAR expresses how much of something is
left:
Me quedan dos euros.
