* Millions of monarch butterflies migrate from Mexico to the United States each
year.
* In Oaxaca, there is a celebration called Guelaguetza. Seven communities join
together to celebrate traditional dances from each region.
* The poinsettia comes from Mexico. It was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, an
American ambassador to Mexico in the 1820’s.
* The Chichen Itzá pyramid is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
* There are 50 types of hummingbirds in Mexico.
Guatemala
* Its name means “Land of the Trees.”
* It is home to 33 volcanoes.
* The material for jeans was invented here.
* The first bar of chocolate was made here.
* The national currency is the quetzal, named after a beautiful bird with green,
blue, and red feathers.
Honduras
* The five stars on the flag represent the five countries of Central America.
* Every year, a small town called Yoro celebrates a festival called “The Festival of
the Fish Rain”. Legend has it that one day in the 70’s during a big rain storm,
hundreds of fish fell from the sky.
* It is home to many Mayan ruins; the most famous is Copán.
* The term “Banana Republic” was originally used as a reference to Honduras
because it exports so many bananas.
* It’s a very poor country. Two thirds of the people are living in poverty.
El Salvador
* It’s called the “Land of the Volcanoes” because it has 20 volcanoes, two of which
are active.
* The country is very poor; the majority of people live on less than $1.25 a day.
* It’s famous for its four species of sea turtles.
* The country hosts international surf competitions.
* It won independence from Spain in 1821 and complete independence in 1841.
Nicaragua
* Nicaragua is home to the only volcano that is formed from two separate magma
flows.
* The two coasts are so close that in the morning you can swim in the Atlantic
Ocean and in the evening you can swim in the Pacific Ocean.
* Its name comes from “nicarao” and “agua”. The Nicaraos were the native people
who lived there when the Spanish arrived in the 1500’s. “Agua” means water.
* Like the U2 song, Nicaragua is a place where the streets have no names.
* It's a very poor country. 75% of the people live on less than $2 a day.
Costa Rica
* Costa Rica has seven active volcanoes.
* It is home to 52 different species of hummingbirds.
* 5% of the world’s biodiversity (plants, animals, insects) lives in Costa Rica.
* 10% of the world’s butterflies live here.
* The President of Costa Rica is a woman, Laura Chinchilla.
* The country’s motto is “Pura vida”, literally “pure life”, living life to the fullest.
Panama
* The narrowest part of Panamá is 56 miles between the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans.
* The Panama Canal opened in 1914. A boat that traveling from NY to San
Francisco reduces its trip by 7872 miles by using the canal.
* The canal accounts for a third of the country’s economy.
* There are more different species of birds in Panama than in the U. S. and
Canada combined.
* It is considered one of the best places in the world to retire.
Cuba
* Baseball is the most popular sport.
* Cuba is a dictatorship. Fidel Castro is the most famous Cuban dictator.
* From the air, the island of Cuba is shaped like a crocodile. People often refer
to it as "El Cocodrilo“, "El Caimán”, the crocodile.
* Very few people have access to the Internet. If you use the Internet illegally,
you can go to jail for five years.
* The Cuban medical system is very good. The country trains so many doctors
that they are often sent to other countries that need them.
The Dominican Republic
* The most popular sport is baseball. More than 500 Dominicans have played
key roles professionally in the United States.
* Santo Domingo, the capital, was established in 1496. It is home to the first
hospital and university in North or South America.
* The dance, the merengue, was invented here.
* Religion is very important here. The majority of Dominicans are Catholic and
the D. R. is the only country with a bible on its flag.
* Humpback whales migrate to the D.R. in January and stay in the Samaná Bay
until March.
Puerto Rico
* Puerto Rico is a United States territory and Free Associated State. Its residents
are U. S. citizens, but they can’t vote in presidential elections.
* Puerto Rico is home to the biggest telescope in the world.
* Puerto Ricans call themselves, “Boricuas”.
* Many English words come from the Taino Indians, including canoe, hammock,
barbecue, manatee and hurricane.
* It’s home to one of the best places to surf in the world, Quique Bravo Beach.
Venezuela
* Its name means “Little Venice”. When explorers saw houses on stilts, they
compared it to Venice, Italy.
* The biggest rodent in the world, the capybara, lives here.
* There is a festival called the “Danzing Devils” to celebrate the triumph of good
over evil. The people wear devil masks during the celebration.
* It’s the home of Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, (3212 feet. High).
* It has vast reserves of crude oil.
Colombia
* It’s near the Equator so it’s sunny almost the whole year. The seasons do no vary
much.
* There are over 3,000 species of butterflies and a large variety of birds in
Colombia.
* 10% of all the different species of animals, insects, and plants in the world live
here.
* The country is named after Christopher Columbus.
* 12% of the world’s coffee comes from Colombia.
* Colombia hosts the largest salsa dancing festival in the world.
Ecuador
* The country is named after the Equator, the imaginary line that goes around the
middle of the Earth and separates the north and south hemispheres.
* It’s the biggest exporter of bananas in the world.
* The Galapagos Islands are home to many interesting animals, including turtles
that can live to be 200 years old.
* American dollars are used as the country’s currency.
* 1,600 species of birds and 6,000 species of butterflies live here.
Peru
* The Andes Mountains pass from the north to the south of the country.
* Macchu Pichú, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is an ancient Inca town.
* Peru has 4,000 different types of potatoes.
* There are 55 different types of corn, including purple, white, and black.
* There are a variety of traditions to celebrate the New Year, including putting on
new yellow underwear just before midnight and eating 12 grapes, one for each
month of the new year.
Bolivia
* Bolivia has 30 official languages including Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara.
* Bolivia is home to the largest salt deposit in the world and this deposit has
lithium reserves underneath it.
* It’s one of the rainiest countries in the world.
* It used to have two capitals, La Paz and Sucre.
* The country is named after Simón Bolívar, a man who fought for Independence
from Spain.
Paraguay
* Instead of saying, “Hola”, when you pass someone in the street, you say,
“Adiós”, which means that you don’t have time to stop and drink yerba mate with
him or her.
* There are no doorbells in Paraguay. Instead, you clap your hands to announce
that you’re outside the door.
* The women make a delicate lace called “ñandutí”, which means “design of a
spider web.”
* Paraguay’s flag is the only one with a different design on the front and the back.
* The country is famous for its bottle dance where women spin and twirl with
bottles stacked on their heads.
Chile
* Chile is the longest country from north to south and it is very narrow.
* The national sport is rodeo.
* The Atacama Desert is the driest place in the world.
* Chile has 500 volcanoes; 123 are active.
* Mountains cover 80% of the country.
Argentina
* Buenos Aires, the capital, is the 4th largest city in the world.
* Argentina is the home of the tango, a passionate dance between a man and a
woman.
* The Iguazú Falls are made up of 275 drops.
* Many gigantic dinosaurs lived here, including one of the largest herbivores,
named the Argentinosaurus.
* Argentina was the first country to use fingerprints to capture criminals.
Uruguay
* There are 3 cows for every person in Uruguay. Cattle contribute significantly
to the country’s economy.
* In 2009, Uruguay became the first country to give a laptop and free Internet
access to all school children.
* 88% of Uruguayans have European ancestry. Many Spaniards and Italians
immigrated to Uruguay during the 1800’s and 1900’s.
* Uruguay, in the Guaraní language means, “River of the Painted Birds.”
* People eat a lot of beef including typical dishes such as “asado”, (barbecued
beef), and “chivitas”, (steak sandwiches).
Spain
* Spain is a monarchy; it has a king and queen.
* Most people take a siesta (nap) between 12 and 4 in the afternoon.
Everything is closed during these hours.
* Soccer is the most popular sport – it’s almost considered a religion. 
* During the San Fermín festival, there is a running of the bulls. People run in
front of the bulls and try to stay out of their way.
* Spain produces 44% of the world’s olive oil.
Equatorial Guinea
* It’s the only Spanish speaking country in Africa. Its official languages are
French and Spanish, although most people speak native languages.
* It has a lot of natural resources including gold, diamonds, and petroleum.
* Originally, pygmies lived here.
* It’s one of the richest African nations but the people are very poor due to
government corruption.
* The Monte Alén National Park is home to gorillas, chimpanzees, leopards,
elephants, crocodiles, and many species of birds and butterflies.
