Stories from the Office of Advancement at Pacific Northern Academy One Vision. All Students. Every Day. Dear Linda, Ciao! Jambo! Kaixo! Halló! Hei! Merhaba! As an American whose family has been speaking Science Fair 50% of PNA students participated in the Science Fair this year. The scientific scholarship was impressive. We greatly appreciate the judges who came in to critique the students' work, the parents English for generations, it can be embarrassingly startling to go somewhere where English is NOT spoken. "What are they doing speaking this other language? How quaint!" The U.S. has become complacent about speaking the international language of business, government, and pop culture. Travel outside of the US, and English is prevalent in the airport, main hotels, menus in big restaurants. But step outside the tourist borders and you find yourself in a disconcerting world where decoding and communicating is tricky and timeconsuming, not to mention at times hilarious or error ridden. Of course, a truly adventurous traveller will never speak the language of every country she visits, but it would be a mistake not to become at least familiar with the basics. Exploring a foreign culture whose language you do know is a special and very wonderful privilege, one that we hope every student at PNA will experience, and one that we support through our Spanish program. PNA is lucky enough to have many families whose first language is NOT English, or who have lived many places and picked up numerous languages. PNA also has students who choose to pursue languages beyond Spanish. This week we salute all of our multi-lingual families and students, and urge everyone to turn to his neighbor and say "Kumusta!" or "Bonjour!" Super Hero letters, marching down the hall. Any language you please..... who stayed up late with their kids, and the teachers who helped make it all happen. The judges were particularly impressed with the comprehensive understanding the kids demonstrated, how confidently the students spoke, and their ability to express what they would do differently next time: a key requirement for a good scientist. We would like to give a shout out to the kids who went one step further and took their science project to the Alaska Science and Engineering Fair: Dylan Eck, Liam Scannell, Hazel Nicholson, Ginny Tremblay and Marty Tumey. Congratulations to you for your hard work and for your many awards! How's Your Spirit? It was Spirit Week at PNA this week. We had Mismatch Monday, Superhero Tuesday, Pirate Wednesday, 60's Thursday and PJ Friday. As always, in a school like PNA, kids interpret a challenge in a wide spectrum of ways. "Pirate" can be an underwater treasure seeker or a modern day unscrupulous business person, Superheroes are themselves, their future selves or Batman. Or perhaps the challenge is figuring out how to wear a tutu every single day, while still adhering to the theme. Tessa has been taking Japanese since Kindergarten at PNA, when she had Laura Sensei as a teacher and got a taste for the language. She says it's "a really interesting language and fun to learn." At the Council of Superheroes...Student Council meets every Tuesday for lunch in Dr. Cohen's office, and decides things like what to do for Spirit Week. For more Spirit Week Pictures, go to the PNA Media Gallery. Love what you see? You can support it! "Je m'appelle Claire, et toi?" Claire took the French class offered through PNA's after school Enrichment Program because she can't wait to go to Paris, climb to the top of la tour Eiffel and then be an exchange student somewhere in France. Hannah's first language is Korean, which her family speaks at home. Click here to Thank You! Cloudy, With A Chance of Meatballs Performance Liam took a correspondence course in Arabic through Johns Hopkins University this fall. Every Tuesday he took over a computer in the lab, put on his headphones Be sure to join us on April 5, at 3:30. Plan now! and learned away! Liam also takes Greek lessons at the Greek Orthodox church here in Anchorage. His favorite language? Arabic. It makes him grin, really really big. The Princess Bride Performance Be sure to join us on Friday, April 26, or Saturday, April 27. Plan now! For a schedule of rehearsals and tech needs, go here. Book Fair Mr. Frodella brings Swahili into his 1st grade classroom (and not just on 1960's day). There are other Swahili speakers at PNA too, in EK. Valeria, in Kindergarten, speaks English, Spanish and Italian with equal ease. At home, it's all Spanish for her and her younger sister Victoria (who's in EK). This year, our book fair is helping the library get ready to move. We will be culling the stacks as aggressively yet prudently as possible. You can trim your stacks too! Bring your books in! Used books will all be under $1, so you can fill your stacks right back up and keep the readers in your family happily busy. We also encourage everyone to participate in our Commemorative Book Program, which is how we bring new, curricularly (no, that's not a word, but it should be!) relevant books into circulation. We have a lot of books waiting to get sponsored so our kids can check them out; we hope you can find one that you'd like to sponsor! Dr. Cohen speaks many languages, including Middle School-ese and Latin. Thank you Jill and Michelle, seamstresses extraordinaire! And thank you to EVERYONE who came on Friday night Set Construction. (The FUNd Stuff will be published by the time it happens, but we are sure it will go/did go great!) Pacific Northern Academy Website One Last One (or Two)... Señor Santos "Quién adelante no mira, atrás se queda" Lee Saunders Pacific Northern Academy Batman was everywhere!
