In this study we don’t only want to observe but we actively stand up
for an improvement – with a multitude of health promotion activities
in the participating regions.

Analysis
Important surveys and physical examinations are foreseen
for different time intervals during the study in the participating
regions. Only in this way we can analyse, interpret and introduce
the achieved effects into the intervention programme in the best
possible manner. And we can learn for the future, what is best
for the health of children.
Diet
A major emphasis in the IDEFICS Study is on the quality of the diet
as one of the main contributors to a healthy future for our children.
We will develop new tools for assessing the children’s diet in order
to study variations in different European cultures and to identify key
elements that need further attention for improvement. In addition,
innovative methods will be applied to learn how children’s dietary
habits and food preferences can be influenced positively, both by

already in early childhood. Individual knowledge and motivation on
one hand, and an environment “inviting” us to make healthy choices
on the other hand, help us to learn healthy living. In the IDEFICS
Study we will focus on these two areas. We will develop a strategy
to improve knowledge and positively stimulate attitudinal changes
in children and their parents. At the same time, initiatives will be
taken aimed at making the environment (schools, kindergarten,
private and public leisure time facilities, etc.) more “healthy-lifestyle-friendly”.
Monitoring
At the beginning of the Study, we will collect data on overweight in
children in an IDEFICS database from most participating European
countries. This is important to ensure an adequate preparation and
a quality control for the following surveys and examinations. The
health promotion activities will also be compared with other regions,

routine initiatives for exercise promotion will take place. By promoting this in kindergartens and schools, we can enhance a healthy
consciousness for the body.
