Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying beds of ivory … their wanton
revelry shall be done away with …” Amos 8:5
The sin of selfishness plagues the world. It is all about “me” and my comfort.
There is no room for the Gospel values like compassion and generosity towards those
in need. This does not mean that we do not find people that give us great testimony
of being Christ-like. But there is so much need for a conversion in many of us, that
God will soften our hearts.
“If they will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be
persuaded if someone should rise from the dead” Luke 16:19-31
Let us draw close to Christ, the only one that may save us from the scourge of
selfishness.
“Our Lord Jesus Christ … who alone has immortality …” 1 Timothy 6:11-16
Lee Atwater, a famous political leader, was a man that hurt many people. It took
a brain tumor and an encounter with Jesus Christ to bring him to the light. He recognized all the wrong he had done, converted to Catholicism and made amends for his
wrongs.
“My illness helped me to see that what was missing in Society is what was
missing in me: a little heart, a lot of brotherhood. You could acquire all you
want and still feel empty… We must address this spiritual vacuum at the
heart of American society, this tumor of the soul.”

ST. DAMIEN OF MOLOKAI
Born in Tremelo, Belgium, on
January 3, 1840. He joined the
Sacred Hearts Fathers in 1860
and received the name Damien.
In 1864, he was sent to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was ordained. For the next nine years
he worked in missions on the big
island Hawaii.
In 1873, he went to the leper
colony on Molokai, after volunteering for the assignment. Damien cared for
lepers of all ages, but was particularly concerned
about the children segregated in the colony.
He announced he was a leper in 1885 and
continued to build hospitals, clinics, and
churches, and some six hundred coffins. He died
on April 15, 1889 in Molokai.
Slandered by a Protestant minister, Mr. Hyde,
Damien was defended by Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote an impassioned defense of Damien in 1905.
Father Damien was canonized in Rome on
October 11, 2009.
"Not without fear and loathing Father Damian
made the choice to go on the island of Molokai in
the service of lepers who were there, abandoned
by all. So he exposed himself to the disease of
which they suffered. With them he felt at home.
The servant of the Word became a suffering servant, leper with the lepers, during the last four
years of his life. To follow Christ, Father Damian
not only left his homeland, but has also staked
his health so he, as the word of Jesus announced in today's Gospel tells us, received

SAN DAMIEN DE MOLOKAI

El pecado del egoísmo asecha el mundo. Se trata de “mi” y mi comodidad. No
hay espacio para los valores del Evangelio como la compasión y la generosidad hacia
los necesitados. Esto no significa que no encontramos personas que dan un bello
testimonio de ser como Cristo. Pero hay tanta necesidad de conversión en muchos de
nosotros, que el Señor suaviza nuestros corazones.
“Si no escuchan a Moisés y a los profetas, no harán caso, ni aunque resucite
un muerto” Lucas 16:19-31
Acerquémonos a Cristo, el único que nos puede salvar del azote del egoísmo.

Lee Atwater, un famoso líder político, era un hombre que lastimó a muchas
personas. Tuvo que tener un tumor cerebral y un encuentro con Jesucristo para
llevarlo a la luz. El reconoció todo el mal que había hecho, se convirtió al catolicismo
e hizo compensaciones por todo el mal que hizo a otros.
“Mi enfermedad me ayudó a ver lo que faltaba en la sociedad, en mi
persona: un poquito de corazón y mucha fraternidad. Podrías adquirir todo

Mis hermanas y hermanos:
El Evangelio nos habla de un señor rico, que goza la vida:
tiene dinero, come bien, bebe bien. A su puerta golpea un
pobre llamado Lázaro; está enfermo con llagas, tiene hambre y
sed. Sufre soledad. Unos perritos de casa lo notan y quieren
consolarlo y le lamen las llagas, El rico no se da cuenta que ahí
hay un pobre, no tiene tiempo ni la misericordia de preocuparse
de el. Por eso no hace nada, Jesús dice que en el día de la
justicia, el rico será condenado por no haber hecho nada por el
pobre. El pobre será reconocido como hijo de Dios, El rico no
es condenado por haber hecho algo malo en contra del pobre
Lázaro. En verdad no lo ha explotado, ni robado, ni le ha
echado los perros en contra de el, ni siquiera le ha hablado
groseramente, simplemente no ha abierto los ojos para verlo,
no ha hecho nada, ha sido indiferente con el. Ese es el pecado
que Dios condena.
Tal vez mucho de nosotros no hacemos mal a nadie.
Muchos decimos: yo soy honrado, no robo, no mato, no tengo
problemas con la policía, si soy padre de familia podríamos
decir no maltrato a mi esposa, les doy buenos consejos a mis
hijos. Pero eso no basta para ser Cristiano, desde el momento
que me encierro dentro de mismo y me olvido que otros tienen
necesidades, no soy Cristiano. Por que estoy cometiendo el
pecado de la indiferencia y ese pecado es condenado por Dios.
El pasado sábado, 17 de septiembre se celebró una Misa
Solemne presidida por el Obispo Oscar Solís y ahí se instaló
oficialmente a Msgr. Lorenzo Miranda como Párroco de nuestra
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. En esta
hermosa misa, Msgr. pidió nuestra oraciones para que el Señor
le inspire a ser buen Párroco para toda la comunidad tanto la
que habla ingles como la que habla español. BIENVENIDO
