Quiero ser la primera en darte la bienvenida a la Academia Española del Gobernador 2015. Te
felicito porque han sido tus habilidades, esfuerzo y empeño los que te llevaron a ser aceptado(a) en
tan selecto grupo. ¡Enhorabuena!
Verás que tienes en común con los estudiantes seleccionados una devoción por la lengua española y
el deseo de dedicar tres semanas a su uso y mejora en un ambiente de inmersión total. Es un
programa riguroso e intensivo que exige un alto nivel de participación y energía y cuyos frutos son
inestimables. Tú ya has demostrado que tienes la capacidad de desarrollarte de una manera
maravillosa en este entorno. ¡Eres privilegiado(a)!
Confío que tu deseo de dominar ampliamente el español te llevará a forjar fuertes lazos de amistad y
hermandad con estudiantes de todas partes de Virginia. Esta motivación te valdrá para crecer y
madurar como individuo, en adición a respetar y a aceptar diferencias. Este es un componente
importantísimo de la Academia que servirá para crear un ambiente seguro y feliz.
Espero pues, que esta experiencia te valga como punto decisivo para la dedicación de toda una vida al
aprendizaje y al amor de la lengua española.
Revisa minuciosamente los formularios y hojas de información enviados adjunto sobre los requisitos,
expectativas y recomendaciones de la Academia. En la página titulada Checklist figura la lista de
formularios que han de ser rellenados y devueltos para viernes, 5 de junio. Esta fecha límite
es fija.

Derecho Práctico

El objetivo del curso es exponer los estudiantes a diferentes aspectos prácticos del derecho a un nivel
básico. El curso presentará diferentes conceptos del derecho mediante el uso de situaciones
hipotéticas que pudieran ocurrir en la vida real. El pensamiento crítico será promovido mediante el
intercambio de ideas y opiniones.

Este curso está diseñado para enseñar a los estudiantes algunas nociones básicas sobre la lengua
árabe. Aprenderemos el alfabeto y las diferentes posiciones de las letras junto con la pronunciación.
Practicaremos la escritura de vocabulario básico y lecturas para principiantes.
Al mismo tiempo indagaremos ciertos aspectos de la cultura de Al-Andalus con los proyectos de
enriquecimiento que haremos por la tarde.
Entendiendo mi entorno me conozco a mí mismo
Profesor Gunn
Exploraremos varias maneras de identificar el estrés mental y físico y cómo aliviarlo de nuestras vidas
cotidianas con la práctica del yoga. Además estudiaremos el ‘ I Ching’, su historia y su uso y cómo
diferentes culturas del mundo se expresan usando las mándalas. Los estudiantes usarán lo aprendido
para dibujar y colorear su propia mándala. Los estudiantes se familiarizarán con el significado de los
emoticonos en español. Los usarán para escribir mensajes, compartirlos con sus compañeros e
interpretar algunos de los refranes más comunes de la lengua española, incluso podrán usar su
creatividad para desarrollar sus propios emoticonos. Estudiaremos la morfología de las plantas y
cómo identificar diferentes árboles y arbustos. Daremos un paseo por el campus y sus alrededores
para poner en práctica lo aprendido en clase.
Metidos en Cataluña

¿Qué tradiciones de España conoces? ¿Los toros, el flamenco y la paella? España no solo es eso.
Situada al noreste de la Península Ibérica, Cataluña es una de las 17 comunidades autónomas de
España.
Viajaremos por la riqueza cultural e histórica de esta región, tierra de artistas como Gaudí,
Miró y Dalí. Conoceremos algunas de sus tradiciones como las torres humanas, la leyenda de San
Jorge, los carnavales o las fiestas mayores. ¿Sabías que en Cataluña además de español se habla
catalán, una lengua con mil años de historia? El paisaje de Cataluña abarca desde las montañas de los
Pirineos, en la frontera con Francia, hasta el delta del río Ebro, pasando por las playas de la Costa
Brava o la curiosa montaña de Montserrat. Vamos a pararnos en algunos de estos lugares, y por
supuesto vamos a probar algunos de los platos típicos de la región. ¿Te apetece una crema catalana o
un brazo de gitano de postre? ¡Va a ser un viaje fantástico!
Bailando por el mundo hispanohablante

Viajemos juntos al ritmo de la música alegre, cadenciosa y contagiosa del mundo hispanohablante.
Experimentaremos desde la elegancia y donaire de bailes españoles, pasando por la alegría y
movimientos de la salsa, merengue, punta hasta los ritmos populares y modernos como la bachata,
rastastás y tribal. Prepárate para divertirte de lo lindo mientras aprendes sobre esta parte esencial de la
cultura Hispana: ¡el baile!

An important note to consider when selecting clothing
The host site packet states (pg. 6):
“All clothing, including that for special occasions such as dances, should follow the guidelines below.
 Clothing should be neat, modest, comfortable, and appropriate.
 Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times.
 Shorts/skirts/dresses must be at least fingertip length.
 Clothing should avoid spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, cleavage, exposed undergarments;
offensive messages.
Spanish Academy students should avoid clothing with English texts. Names of places or brand
names are fine. You are encouraged to wear clothes that emphasize the Spanish culture or the
Spanish language.”

Descripciones de las actividades en grupo “El revoltijo”
Los estudiantes van a trabajar en grupo cada tarde y algunos fines de semana para la
creación de varias obras. Esta actividad sirve como una manera de utilizar el español
de manera práctica y pragmática.
Instrucciones: Ve al http://goo.gl/Gors5o para llenar el formulario. Dale a las
siguientes actividades una puntuación del 1 al 5, el 1 siendo el de más interés y el 5 el de
menos. Los grupos se asignarán por orden de la llegada de este formulario.
Paso de baile
¿Te gusta mover el cuerpo según el ritmo? ¿Te gusta coreografiar movimientos o
aprenderlos? Los miembros de este grupo aprenden y practican bailes hispanos y los
presentan coreografiados (a veces acompañado por la Tuna). No se requiere experiencia
previa para ser parte de este grupo. Al fin todos saben que son los expertos de la danza latina.
La tuna
Este es el coro de la academia. Aprende canciones hispanas y disfruta cantando e
interpretando la música. Colabora con la tropa de baile o el grupo de la novela.
Los Tecno
Los estudiantes en este grupo mantendrán el blog y el canal de YouTube a diario. Efectúan
entrevistas con los miembros de los otros proyectos y las publican en el blog. El grupo es
responsable por la creación y producción del DVD que incluye fotos, vídeos, música y texto
que conmemoran la academia, y del cual cada estudiante recibirá una copia.
¿Qué pasa en el mundo?
Es el noticiero oficial de la Academia. Este grupo se hace responsable de presentar noticias
nacionales e internacionales. También efectúan entrevistas a miembros de otros grupos y de
las otras academias para mantenerte al tanto de lo que ocurre a tu alrededor.
La novela
¿Te gusta escribir cuentos? ¿Te gusta actuar? Tal vez es el proyecto para ti. Los actores en esta
tropa escriben y desarrollan una novela para el entretenimiento de sus compañeros. Además,
producen los anuncios que se presentan entre las escenas de los actos. ¡Podrías ser la próxima
estrella!

News Release

Lexington, Virginia
“Hablo español.” This is an important phrase for 60 Virginia high school students for the
next three weeks at the Virginia Governor's Spanish Immersion Academy at Washington
and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Until July 11, the Spanish Academy's students
will live their lives completely in Spanish to boost their abilities to use the language.
The Virginia Department of Education sponsors five Governor's Foreign
Language Academies each summer where students are nurtured and language skills are
cultivated. Participating students were selected through a statewide competition. CBS
News and USA Today have featured the Academies as examples of innovative foreign
language programs.
___________________________ (Student’s name), a _____________ (Grade
level) at ____________________________ (School name), was among those who
arrived in Lexington on June 20. After pledging to speak Spanish exclusively, he/she
and the other students will eat, sleep, and breathe español.
The students will learn, not in the ordinary way with textbooks and CDs, but by
really using the language in the cafeteria, in the dorm, on the soccer field, as well as in
the classroom. And they will have the times of their lives while doing it.
The language immersion extends beyond the classroom with afternoon activities
such as cooking, sport, and visual and performing arts. Students' writing and
photography skills are developed through journals, a yearbook, videos, and weekly
newspapers. All activities are hands-on and in real-life situations, making language
acquisition meaningful, practical, and lasting.
The Academy will be a truly unique endeavor, one that alumni often describe as
unforgettable and among the best and most fun experiences of their lives.

1. Speak, read and hear only Spanish and speak it all the time!
2. Be open, flexible, enthusiastic, and on time at all times.
3. Arrive promptly to all classes and events of the Academy.
4. Arrive prepared to class; be attentive and participate during class.
5. Participate in ALL activities with a positive attitude.
6. Remember that you are part of a team, and that your actions influence the mood
and atmosphere of the Academy.
7. Treat your roommate (and others) and your room gently; respect his/her
property (e.g., do not play jokes that involve the property of others).

Estimados profesores:
Para mí ha sido una satisfacción inmensa el poder haber tenido en el pasado alumnos en la
academia española. Conozco la labor incansable que ustedes han realizado estos años y que el
fruto de ese esfuerzo ha sido bien recompensado.
Los felicito porque un triunfo de sus estudiantes es un triunfo vuestro.
Les insto a que se mantengan en comunicación con sus estudiantes enviándoles cartitas que
se los llenarán de gran alegría.
También les invito al espectáculo final en que los alumnos presentan el producto de su
trabajo a lo largo de las tres semanas del programa. Habrá presentaciones de baile y canto,
pasos de comedia y el estreno del disco de memorias. En la recepción que sigue tendrán la
oportunidad de charlar con los estudiantes, profesores y residentes supervisores.
La presentación será el sábado, 11 de julio de 1-3 PM en el Keller Theater of the Lenfest
Center of the Arts en la Universidad de Washington & Lee. Su presencia en esta actividad
