Cuauhtémoc Calderón Villarreal
Holder of a BA in Economics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
México, UNAM, ; a MSc in Economics and International Politics from the
Economic Research and Teaching Center (CIDE), Mexico; and of a Ph.D. in
Economic Sciences by the Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolis, France; he
currently works as a professor-researcher in the Department of Economic
Studies from the El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He is a specialist in
macroeconomics and monetary economics, prices' levels, inflation and deflation,
international economics, industrial organization and macroeconomics. His most

Alejandro I. Canales
He is an economist from the Universidad de Chile, holder of a M.Sc in
Demography and of a Ph. D. in Social Sciences from El Colegio de México.
Professor-researcher in the Regional Studies Departament (INESER) from the
Universidad de Guadalajara, and Director of the Population Studies Center, at
the same university. Nowadays he is the president of the Latin American
Association of Population and has been an ECLA consultant in migration and
development issues. He is a member of the National Researchers System since
1994 (level II) and of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. His most recent books

Juan Chackiel
Graduate from the Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad de la
República de Uruguay . He has basic, advanced and specialized postgraduate
courses in Demography in CELADE United Nations. Nowadays he is a
consultant in Demography (technical advice and teaching in demographic
analysis). He is the author of more than 50 publications in books and journals, out
of which the last three are: "La dinámica demográfica en América Latina",
"Demographic dynamics in Latin America" 2004, in the series Población y
Desarrollo, number 52, coauthored with S. Schkolnik; "Los sectores rezagados
en la transición de la fecundidad en América Latina", "The lingering sectors in

Rodolfo Corona Vázquez
He holds a B.A. in Financial Actuary from the Faculty of Sciences, UNAM. He
coursed the specialization in Demography in the Latin American and the
Caribbean Demographic Center (ECLAC). Nowadays he works as a researcher
in el Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He is a level III National Researcher System
from CONACyT. He obtained the 2003 National Demography Award. The
researches he develops have been dedicated to methodology design of direct
measurement and estimation of demographic phenomena, with special incidence
in morbidity and domestic and international migration. He has more than a
hundred publications among articles in journals, books and books' chapters.

Juan Gabino González Becerril
Holder of a B.A in Economics from the Faculty of Economy from UAEM, a
M.Sc in Population Studies from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He currently
works as a professor-researcher for the Research and Advanced Studies
(CIEAP), from the UAEM and courses Doctorate studies in Population Studies
in el Colegio de México. He has been journalist for El Universal newspaper and
academic journals with employment, urbanization and migration issues. Some of
his recent publications worth mentioning: Laindustrizalización y urbanización
del Estado de México.

Alfonso S. González Cervera
He is a full time professor-researcher from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma
de México -Unidad Xochimilco. He is a Medical Surgeon from the UNAM, with
a M.Sc in Medical Demography from the University of London; specialty in
Population and Development, from the University J. Nehru, and a Ph.D. in
Anthropology (UNAM). His most recent publications are: "Homicidios en la
población menor de cinco años en México, 1992 - 2001", 2004, in Papeles de
Población, number 40; and "Una aproximación a la medición del subregistro de
nacimientos en las estadísticas vitales de México", 2005, in Estudios

Roberto Ham Chande
He holds a B.A in Financial Actuary from UNAM, and a M.Sc in Statistical
Mathematics from the Inte-American Statistic Teaching Center, Santiago,
Chile. He also holds a M.Sc from the Michigan State University and a Ph. D. in
Demography from the Université de Paris-X, Nanterre. He has been a Financial
Actuary for IMSS, ISSSTE and for private enterprises. He has been director
from the Demographic Studies and Urban Development Center, from the
Colegio de México. Nowadays he is a professor-researcher from the Department
of Population Studies from the Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He is also a member
of the National Researchers System level III. He has received the Fullbright

Mirna Hebrero Martínez
She holds a BA in Financial Actuary from the Faculty of Higher Studies Acatlán,
UNAM. She obtained the M.Sc degree in Demography from the Demographic
Studies and Urban Development Center from El Colegio de México. She is the
coordinator of programs subscribed to the Coordination of Policies from the
Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Where she is responsible for the
situational diagnostic of the legitimate claimant IMSS adult population, which is
the basic input for the design of the 2006-2025 Institutional Gerontologic IMSS
Plan. Nowadays she is a member of the researcher team of the CONACyT
Rural Aging Project in high migration municipalities, coordinated by the Dr.
Veronica Montes de Oca. She is coauthor of the article; "Mexico and the State
of Guanajuato: Intergenerational transferences towards older adults", in the
Notas de Población journal, number 80, ECLA. She has also participated as an
expositor in different forums, congresses and national and international meetings
on Aging in Mexico and Latin America.

J. Eduardo Mendoza Cota
He is the current Director of the Economic Studies Department from El Colegio
de la Frontera Norte. He is a member of the National Researchers System, and
a member of the Editing Committee of the Frontera Norte journal, of the
Academic Council and the Editorial Council from El Colegio de la Frontera
Norte. He has recently published: "Liberalización económica y cambios en la

She is a demographer. She did postgraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University,
Baltimore, United States and in the London School of Economics and Political
Science, England. She is the Director of the Institute of National Studies (IDEN);
she is a member of the Directive Council of the World Institute for Development
Economics Research (WIDER) from the University of the United Nations, of
the Advisory Panel from the Pacific Science Institute of the International Union
of Scientists of the Population, based in Belgium, of the International Union of
Sociology, based in Paris and of the Panamanian Association for the Advance
of Science. She was given the United Nations World Population Award and the
National Award of the Order of Belisario Porras in the rank of the Gran Cruz;
she holds an Honoris Causa Ph. D. in Sociology from the Universidad de la
Habana. Her most important work: América Latina: transición demográfica
y crisis económica, social y política; Población y desarrollo. Estado del

Hugo Montes de Oca Vargas
He is a Ph. D. student in Population studies in El Colegio de Mexico. MSc. in
Demography from El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He holds a B.A in Economy
from the Faculty of Economics of the UAEM. His areas of interest are
Demographic Aging, Population Dynamics and Internal Migration.

Verónica Montes de Oca Zavala
She is a sociologist from the Faculty of the Political and Social Sciences from
UNAM. She accomplished Master studies in Demography and Doctoral studies
in social Sciences with specialty in Population from the Center of Demographic
Studies and Urban Development from the Colegio de México. She is a Level I
National Researcher in the National Researchers System and also an a titular
full-time researcher from the Social Researches Institute, where she is also a

Technical Secretary. In that institution she researches on aging process, formal
and informal support systems, as well as the older adults' situation in rural and
urban environments. Nowadays she coordinates the project: Aging, families and
social development. The Contrasts between rural and urban Mexico, Migration,
Transnational networks and aging : studies of the transnational family networks
of Guanajuato's older adults, as well as the rural aging in high-migration
municipalities. She is the author of the book: Redes comunitarias. Participación,
organización y significado de las redes de apoyo comunitarias entre
hombres y mujeres adultos mayores: la experiencia de la colonia Aragón

Jaciel Montoya Arce
He holds a Ph.D in sociology from UNAM, where he also accomplished his BA
and M.Sc studies on the same subject. He has published several books, among
them are: El proceso de metropolización en la ciudad de Toluca 1950-1990,
Estado de México: población en movimiento. Un análisis demográfico del
periodo 1950-1980, and Encuesta sobre prácticas de los sujetos sociales
de la zona metropolitana de la ciudad de Toluca. His area of interest is the
vulnerable groups. Currenlty he is the Coordinator of the Research and
Advanced Studies of the Population Center from the UAEM.

Isalia Nava Bolaños
She holds a B.A in Economics from UNAM. She accomplished her M.Sc in
Demography from el Colegio de México and she is a candidate for the Ph. D.
in Population Studies in the same Institution.

Manuel Ordorica Mellado
He holds an M.Sc in Demography from El Colegio de México and a Ph. D. in
Engineering from UNAM. He was the Director of Area of Population Studies
at the National Council of Population from 1977 to 1987; Education consultant
in UNESCO, from 1987 to 1988; He is the coordinator of the MSc in
Demography and Ph. D. in Population Studies with specialty in Population
Studies of the Center of Demographic Studies and Urban Development from El
Colegio de México. Nowadays he is the Secretary General of that very
Institution. He is a member of the National Researchers System and Premio
Nacional de Demografía. Among his most important publications are: Evaluation
of the Mexican fertility survey, 1976-1977 (coauthored with Joseph E.
Potter); The impact of rapid fertility decline on the geographical redistribution
of the population in developing countries, and Ajuste de una función

Jorge Santibáñez Romellón
He is a holder of a B.A in Mathematics from UNAM. He holds a Ph. D. in
Mathematics (Probability and Statistics option) from Louis Pasteur University,
Strasburg, France. His areas of specialization in Mathematics are: Theory of
Probability, Stochastic processes, trajectory of processes, stochastic, statistics,
methodology for numeric information, methodology of observation of migratory
flows. Work areas: application of probability and statistics, international migration,
sampling, development of methodology to generate, process and analysis of
numeric information, quantitative evaluation of social programs and public
policies, Mexico-United States Relation, borders of Mexico. Nowadays he is the
president of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte. He has given more than 100 courses
on Teaching in different national and international institutions. He has recently

Mexico; "Migración: el reto de administrar mientras llega el desarrollo", 2006, in

Rodolfo Tuirán Gutiérrez
He is an economist, a demographer and a sociologist. He accomplished a Ph. D.
in sociology from the University of Texas, in Austin. He has been sub secretary
of the Ministry of Social Development (from April 2002 to January 2006) and
secretary general of the National Council of Population, (from June 1997 to
March 2002). He was the president of the Mexican Society of Demography
(1996 and 1998) and professor-researcher from El Colegio de México (19831996). He is the author or coordinator of 24 books and has published more than
160 articles of socio-demographic character in specialized journals and books.
He received the National Prize of Demography in 2004 and he is a national
researcher from the National Researchers System since 1991

Carlos Welti Chanes
He is an economist, a sociologist and a demographer from the University of
Chicago. He is a titular researcher from the Institute of Social Researches from
UNAM. He is a member of the National Researchers System since its
foundation. He has been president of the Mexican Society of Demography,
general coordinator of the Latin American Program of Activities in Population
and Vice-rector of Research and Postgraduate Studies of the Autonomous
University of Puebla. He is a Quantitative Analysis professor in the Faculty of
Political and Social Sciences in UNAM. He is a member of the of Administration
Council of the Family Planning Mexican Association and he presides its technical
committee. He has published a great deal of works on fecundity. In one of his
most recent works he analyzes the information of the National Survey on
Reproductive Health of 2003, where he shows the possible overestimation of the
fecundity descent in Mexico in the recent years.
